Exclusive Barry Sheene Interview (shot on super 8mm)

This exclusive Barry Sheene interview with Nick Harris I produced along side my partner Bill Gamon in 1982, not long before Barry emigrated to Australia.
It was shot on super 8mm (so the quality is not like video shot today) at his home near Gatwick Airport and formed part of a video magazine we published called Bike Rider.
In the interview Barry talks about:
. how they had to nick diesel for their truck to get to his first GP
. what he would think about during a race
. riding in the rain
. flying his helicopter
. which other rider did he trust the most when racing
. what it is like to ride a 500cc GP motorbike
. which two crashes he considered were his fault
. about leaving Suzuki
. about the death of one of his best friends at Brands Hatch
The video ends with a trip on a bike around the famous Kent circuit Brands Hatch.

Anyone that enjoyed watching Barry in the 70's knows what I mean when I say he was the best thing for the sport at that time. Kenny and Barry going flat out at the Transatlantic series was a thing to behold. RIP Barry.

Very Barry Sheene. I remember sitting with him behind a barrier (in his garage at Donnington) indicating which girls could come through to meet him.

There was nothing more exciting. Not even the modern British SuperBike Championship, with photographer press access at Silverstone. Barry was best back then ! And very likeable too. As were and still are many motorcycle racers. Not like the car lot!

I loved Barry back in the day. I even asked my mum and dad for his book for Christmas, and I still have it. The highlight of my dad taking my brother and I to Oulton Park was Barry screeching up in his gold Rolls Royce, jump out, stripped to his Y fronts and pulled his leathers on. He right, if you're good enough you'd make it back them. I raced an old TZ 350A and was always too frightened of hurting myself lol. I still have a Norton Lowboy Domiracer, an 88SS cafe racer and a Yamaha FZR1000.

I am not really into motorcycles but he was a wonderful person to spend time with. We would often at Donington chat to him in the garage which was surrounded by fans many of them girls.

This is what it's like listening to someone without a PR filter or any corporate bullshit .. Like listening to a mate in the pub . Very frank and straight to the point and honest...Sadly doesn't happen much these days , it's all gone very formula 1 esque......A great film clip never seen this before . Managers of young riders would do well to show them this ...The next Barry Sheene ? Never happen , he was a one off ....

A lovely, humble man, I had a good chat with him, one to one, he was like a brother, very personable and when you meet him you understand how he came to be a public figure. A great racer too and given the machinery, he would definitely have won more World Championships.

Great interview with Barry,boy hood hero, managed to get his autograph at brands when he was racing trucks,saw him at Silverstone too, great ambassador for the sport.

I’ve just come across this fantastic film. What a brilliant interview of one of my heroes. My best friend and I used to love watching him race. Thanks to you, my weekend could not have started any better! I’m already looking forward to watching it again later !😀

Hi Terry I am so pleased you enjoyed it. I met Barry a few times at Donnington while filming and of course at his house near Gatwick when we filmed the interview. I will always remember when we arrived and went into his office he handed me a large length of stainless steel rod that was sitting on the mantle piece and said that was what they put in my leg after one of my crashes.

What a great interview. When Barry came to Australia and started doing commentary work he quickly became everyone's favourite voice on TV. He was warm and funny and deeply human, and totally unpredictable. I think there were a few TV producers chewing their fingernails at times wondering what outrageous thing he might come out with. For many years I rode a 1981 Suzuki GS1000 and it gave me a link to Barry, knowing that he'd taken his version of my clunky old bike to the podium. The Barry Sheene Festival of Speed was one of Australia's largest bike weekends, and it's a pity it's been renamed to the International Festival.

We are related to Barry Sheene my son still has the name of Sheene my grandfather was Barry sheene cousin who lived in London warfrunston name was John Sheene who died aged 41

@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker Thank you, happy times indeed spent both at Donington Park and Mallory. Met Barry a number of times. Always specular, pulling 'wheelies' out of the hairpin at Mallory ! I have a 1989 RG 500C Pepsi-Suzuki Kevin Schwantz road legal replica. Summer use only.

Hi @@GrrMeister , All seems a long time ago but I remember once at Donington we wanted to get a a lap of the track for the VHS magazine programme. At that time my partner Bill Gamon and myself we had worked on Talking Bikes at Southern TV with Suzuki and they gave us the camera mount that was used for Silver Dream Racer that had stared David Essex. This we mounted on Joey Dunlops bike and the organisers brought the whole meeting to halt so Joey could do a few laps with our camera mounted on the bike. Unfortunately in those days as independent Film Producers (having by then left Southern TV) we were pioneering the use of super 8mm film and therefor the camera (a Braun Nizo 801) we mounted was the one that now lives on my wall behind my desk here. This camera was the top of the range and retailed at around £500+ but what we did not really think about was as the bike accelarated the G forces did really strange things to the motor and therefore we had a completely useless film when we got it processed. Never mind we learnt something about cameras and G forces. All the best Dave

Don't knock super 8, I still use the format in favour of any video format or digital capture. Plus when this was captured, super 8 was better than any portable video system of the era.

I do not knock super 8mm as we were pioneers in shooting it for documentaries with separate sound. The first one I did was for broadcast TV and the camera a Braun Nizo 801 with crystal control to sync with a high end Sony cassette machine which also had built in crystal control. We transferred the sound then to sprocketed 8mm fully coated sound. Finally it was edited on a Shuler 8mm picsync. I still have both the camera and cassette recorder mounted on my wall. The problem was though with super 8 was getting it transferred to video. Every though we used a full broadcast telecine with a super 8mm head fitted the end pictures were not good. Much of this came down to the telecine operators who insisted that all the footage had 1 volt peak to peak even if it did not have any highlights in it.

Isn't it strange when you look back at your teenage formative years and piece together the people who really inspired you? For me it was Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), Barry Sheen, Dylan Thomas and a few others.

Hi Dave, when you visited Barry, did he have the tiles above the cooker with hand painted bikes? The new owners have kept them there.

Hi Mike, I didn’t go into the kitchen. When we arrived Barry took us to his office through a dining room with what seemed like hundreds of bottle of wine on the wall.

@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker Haha, that would account for the slightly iffy bike paintings on the splash back tiles, apparently he and an ‘Italian’ friend took to the tiles after a little vino, wish I took a photo
