ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

Tim is exactly how I pictured him. Lean, strong, smart, and a true sailor. A man of few words. When he speaks, people listen. Thank you for the interview. 👏

I concur, I hoped they might talk more about specific aspects of the boat design. Although you got Tims design philosophy from the interview. Keep it light and "Just go sailing".

Tim might consider selling the company so others would have access to this fabulous boat. Seems like there is a market for them.

There's nothing scary about dual helms such as on a Catana. In fact its often the favourite place to be, particularly night watches. Many Catanas have been around the world, in comfort and respectable speed.

What a class act that Tim Mumby. He avoided speaking ill of other boats. He is clear about his priorities in life. He recommends keeping it simple instead of going for the loaded and expensive route, even though that would make him more money. Its a shame he isn't taking more orders, he seems like a builder you can trust.

LOL Gimballed spice rack. Geeking out on all the Oz-speak. But seriously loved the interview. Wish it could have been a bit longer, but you both covered the major points. These are safe and performant boats meant for families crossing oceans, not condomaran charter boats. Tim's done plenty of crossings and built a boat after his priorities learned from that.

Interesting to see Tim again. He was around Shelter Cove in Hong Kong in the ‘80’s in that green steel mono and where I suspect he got to appreciate the performance of multis in the form those Marples tris Papillon and Pacific High I’m guessing his yard is up near Danao?

Great interview with Tim. Really liked how Tim didn't have anything negative to say about plastic production boats. He does his thing and that's all that matters.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 8 ай бұрын
There are many different ways to do boats, and they all have their own tradeoffs. Plastic is very durable, but arguably bad for the environment. Aluminum is also durable due to the oxides formed. Aluminum is also highly recycled and recyclable. Plastic composites, not so much.

Tim should invest in a waterjet or even a cnc plasma table since pricing has gone way down and there is so many used ones available on the market. It would pay for itself in a very short period of time and it would increase precision greatly. With a waterjet they could cut out plastic for windows, fiberglass interior panels and just about anything else.

It would be great to have more footage and info about what seems to be the new version of Mumby48, seen at 8:54 . It seems to have a "squarish" salon, which would allow for more versatile use of internal space, and better heat/sunlight management.

Great interview and I am impressed with the sailing experience of Tim and how he used his experience to design practical and real world factors into his design. I am sorry he is no longer building boats but his design is available for other shipyards to build, although the cost will be dramatically increased from what was available from his yard in the Philippines due to lower costs of construction there. Looking forward to more videos from the Jupiter.

Jamie, Great chat with Tim. What are the key changes that Tim has made in his newer boat designs compared with your boat? 1. I see these new boats in the yard have vertical bows, which will increase the waterline slightly? 2. Do the newer boats have more stringers for additional strength in the hull, and does this increase the displacement weight slightly? 3. The boat in harbour with a single diesel and electric drive. Do you have any additional equipment information on this boat? I agree with you on the KISS principle. However, Beta/Nanni do motors with 24V DC starters and generators, all instruments can be brought with 24V DC, and today you do need a 3kW AC inverter onboard for many electrical power services. The downside of sailing cats in the past is having to need two diesel drive systems with its additional maintenance issues. Thanks for getting the interview with Tim.

Great interview! That was a great question you asked Tim about electric engines. After watching Peter of Sailing into Freedom talking about electric and saying that he could actually do the Elcano World Challenge, I thought of getting some Ocean Volt shaft driven engines with no generator and a bunch of solar power so that I could do the same thing without having to carry the weight of diesel fuel. I'm still going to look into it but now I'm sort of leaning to the Yanmar 30's that Tim installs as standard equipment. I also suspect that the Ocean Volt shaft driven engines are really expensive and I might not be able to afford that. I really like the new bow design and didn't know that he had done that. I'm also interested in how the 50 sails. Is it a smoother ride and is the boat wider than the 48? Thanks.
