Exclusive Look: Rivian R2 Walkaround and First Impressions

The Rivian R2, recently announced and received with high praises, is now on the minds of many consumers. Rivian just started sending out a limited number of prototype vehicles to be seen by the public, and I had the opportunity to get a very close and intimate look at the new R2 vehicle.
Of course the Rivian R2 is aimed squarely at the Tesla Model Y, which last year was the best selling car, in all categories, in the entire world. This target market is a large and constantly growing segment of the automotive industry and we continue to see more entrants and further enhancements to existing offerings form manufacturers.
The Rivian R2, unlike the Tesla Model Y, is shaped in a more box format, similar to the Rivian R1S. This signature design can be seen throughout the R2 just like its larger sibling the R1S. Taking the things consumers love about the R1S and bringing it down to a package that is affordable, not too small, and doesn't sacrifice on range or capability is a tough challenge.
At Electrify Expo Orlando, I had the opportunity to walk around and get good video of the car up close and personal. I was also lucky enough to get the employees to show me some areas of the R2 that have not been seen before, including the sub-trunk. Although this particular car is a prototype, it appears to be somewhere between a Beta and Alpha, meaning most of the interior seems likely complete to production level standards, but there are still some areas of the car that are clearly not the production intent finish.
All that said, this R2 is a great representation of what to expect when the Rivian R2 does go on sale in the first half of 2026, with a starting price of $45,000, range north of 300 miles, and 0-60 as quick as 3.0 seconds. These stats, are clearly targeted at the Tesla Model Y as they bring price, performance and range in the Model Y territory, and in some cases, exceed the Model Y capability.
Looking closely, we can see the UI in the R2, which represents a familiar Rivian feel and look we have come used to in the R1T and R1S trucks. Although the steering wheel looks to be more prototype than production intent, the overall feel and operation of the vehicle seems to be on par with the traditional Rivian experience.
Finally, looking at the performance of the car, it is clear this Rivian R2, just like its counterparts, will have some trail capabilities with rugged tires and suspension. This is all wrapped up with a native NACS charge port, giving the Rivian R2 access to the most reliable DC fast charging network in North America.
The only question that remains is can Rivian deliver on the specs and performance announced, and will these stats still be competitive in 2 years time. These questions will all be answered soon, and the ramp to R2 deliveries is sure to be exciting.

Wonder if they even can survive to launch it, Burned over $19,000,000,000 up since 2019 now already per Forbes. And if they do survive(raising another 8-10billion is my guess) what the average selling price will be vs this so called 45k talked about price? @@mluu510 Tesla is not replacing their cables. Why should they? Manufacturers have known forever about their cables lengths from the start and could have placed the port on either the rear left, or better still, the front right. They are instead creating an extension cable that non-Tesla owners can buy. This is what Rivian is telling any potential future customer that want to use the largest, most reliable network on the planet (whose vast majority are V3's and will still be for many years to come): On one hand they're telling them, "look, we added the NACS port so you no longer have to carry around an adapter with you"; but on the other they're telling them, "but instead, you'll have to carry an even bulkier extension around with you."

On X, I had stated that if I had to choose between the Model Y and R2, I'd go R2. After watching this, I stand by that. I think the height and trunk space compared to the Y is the biggest reason when you're looking at a small SUV/Crossover.

Same. Still watching the video but I saw someone show the subtrunk being smaller on the R2 and asking people if that made them change their mind. To me, no. It’s a bummer to have a smaller space, but this isn’t finished, so it might get larger come release time. Also, the drink is huge.

I really like this, and it's more of a conventional SUV size. This could be their home run if they get production going as soon as possible. I hope Rivian succeeds as well as Tesla did and we start seeing even more EVs on the road. I went from a RAV4 to a Model Y but I like the look and the cargo space this has. I could see myself switching to something like this down the road.

I think the NACS port is on the passenger side because curbside charging has proven to be so important to widespread EV adoption. RJ mentioned the curbside charging in his "justification" for the location. Compatibility with the R1 charging port location is another reason, but maybe not the main reason when you look at EV use in Europe and urban US locations. I frankly think Tesla needs to be the one to change - to locate on the passenger side. Tesla's design focus has been oriented to North America suburbia in the past. For me personally, I wish the charge ports were front passenger side which would be compatible with a Tesla charger and would also address the massive need for urban and European curbside charging.

I love Rivians. It's so great to see the lower pricing. However, I will only get one if they move the charging port to the left rear from the front right. I don't want to be carrying around a cumbersome extension to use the largest most reliable network on the planet. Which Rivian just got access to today. @@howifixedit.9076 Tesla does NOT update or replace any of it's working dispensers. They only add. It's why they have the most abundant chargers/dispensers out there by a WIDE margin. It's not even close. It took them over a decade now to get to this point. V4's will not be even close to the amount of V3's that will be around in a short 2 years times. People are used to gas vehicles with abundant places to fuel up. To make the switch, they'll select the EVs that offers the most convenient and abundant places to charge, like they are used to with gas vehicles. It's simple human nature. You want the most sales, you make it easy for them to charge anywhere they want. You force them to haul around an extension, your sales will be drastically reduced. For a company struggling to survive (needing every sale they can get) with it's stock down over 90% after being the most highly funded start up in American history, you'll fail. It's that simple.

Great video and very cool vehicle, but two years is too long. So many other vehicles coming between now and then. No way they can hit that price two years in advance - nobody knows for certain what’ll happen over the next two years. Plus might not even be tax incentives then so they can’t claim it’ll be eligible.

I was pretty set on getting a Bronco Sport Heritage for 40k and when first glanced at the R3 thought it was a small hatchback not bigger the a Volvo ex30. Really like the size compared to a R2/Bronco Now I bought 150 Rivian stock shares and cannot wait to preorder one. But worried the company can pull through with only around 3 billion cash left and losing 1 billion a year free cash flow. But think the R2 and R3 gonna save them similar to Tesla and the 3

Put everything into getting a r2 line started in mid 2025&scaling up to 100k+unit's a year in 2026 To survive without raising more billions bilked from investors SMDH, Forbes said rivians burned up over $19,000,000,000 from 2019-2023. 😆

I was thinking about buying the R1S. But why buy an R1S for $90k, when the R-2 is coming out for only $45k? The R-2 is similar to the R1S; just a bit smaller. Really hope Rivian makes it. Between losing $107.4k/each on its existing vehicles; losing $1.5 bill/qtr and R-2 not coming out for a while, I have my doubts about Rivian not declaring bankruptcy very soon

This is fine and all, but I really just want an R3. I like the hatchback look and smaller size way more. But the R2 is definitley a much better exterior design than Tesla's blobs, and the interior is 100x better. It appears to be more practical as well (space, folding seats, ground clearance, erganomics and controls, etc). I honestly think this is a better vehicle than the Model Y in pretty much every way and could see it outselling the Tesla once they get production up to speed.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy Always a plus. Rivian stated the R2 will start "around 45k", which probably means 45-47k. My guess is that the R3 models will be ~5-7k cheaper, just low enough to put the base model under $40k (39,9xx). If I can get a dual motor AWD model for $45k and it's eligible for the tax credit, I'll be a happy camper. Hopefully they offer it in several fun colors too. I'm tired of seeing so many boring colors on the road, and such a cool hatchback design deserves an exciting color palette. The teal of the R3X concept is a start, and I hope they offer at least 5 or 6 interesting, non-greyscale colors (it would look great in the bright blue or green they already use in the R1 models).

Rivian has made a terrible mistake in unveiling the R2 two years before launch in 2026. We can expect to see fold flat front seats and similar design features in Chinese NEVs by the end of this year. Tesla as well will be benchmarking Rivian's unveiled R2 & R3 features in their forthcoming Model Y refresh and next generation platform vehicles, both expected in 2025. Rivian will be starting to ramp the R2 with limited local American production in 2026, while we can now expect their global competition to be producing BEVs with similar features and lower prices at massive scale at that time.

I have my doubts that Rivian will still in business in 2026 to actually produce the R2 but I hope they do. This vehicle needed to be released 2 years ago when the Model Y was selling for $65k. They would have crushed the market. Who knows what Tesla and other major EV manufacturers will release before 2026 and that's if Rivian can even get this out on time.

Nope rj spoke with marques brownlee and said about 270 miles on the 45k rwd trim. I bet the 300+trims all cost well over 50k. Like Volvo suckering people on the ex30 saying a base core is 35k sure, but anything else is over 41k dual motor trims are 44k+ and maxes at 49k perf trim without the upcoming even more expensive cross country variant.👍🏻

Model Y versus Mustang MachE versus R2 now same said be true in the pickup truck market but reversed with Rivian 1st, Ford 2nd and now Tesla 3rd. Not really into the hype at the moment but definitely starting to see pure play BEV taking over US Highways along the I-95 Corridor USA Southeast. What is lacking remains scaled up charging infrastructure to include Tesla still upon this the most valuable highway interstate in the World. PHEVs remain far more influencing the market as a consequence because the fuel infrastructure is already here. Only Ford produces a full sized hybrid truck that i am aware of and has for many Years now so more great news for Ford Motor Company. If fuel prices collapse in the USA and they might in select markets such as Houston, Cleveland, Los Angeles and Central New York definitely will change the US economy forever and for the better *WHEN* that happens and is just a matter of when for these 4 markets 4 of the largest for finished motor fuels in the World if taken in holistically (region wide for every vehicle type on and off road.) Don't forget that teaser price is for a 270 miles of range rwd trim with no glass roof or tow packages etc. I bet it averages 55-60k asp if they survive getting this to market in 2026? Forbes says rivians burned up over $19,000,000,000 just since 2019. And rj himself publicly mentioned needing to raise another $10-15,000,000,000 to fully fund the GA plant last year. GA is now on hold and has local legislators looking to go after rivian to recoup funds already committed to the site&site improvements. 👍🏻

Can’t see how they will make any money on this. They lose $40K on every vehicle they sell now. This will just make it worse. Rivian is not likely to survive.

@@srl0003 yup has it beat hands down in looks and imo even with the juniper update likely coming later this year or early 2025 for the Y? The r2 is still going to look like a budget range rover ev vs the bar of soap or frog inspired Y. But tesla has more $ in the bank than rivians raised and burned so there's that going for it. Plus the world's top selling vehicle in 2023&only ev to EVER accomplish this. Along with about 3,000,000 Y sales just since April of 2020. Could tesla sell 6 or 7,000,000+Y before this even drops assuming rivian survives to launch the r2?

Watch my word. The R3 is going to be the runaway volume seller for Rivian. The $45k R2 will be $60k+ with Dual Motors, larger battery pack, etc. It’s still too expensive for the average family.
