Memories are fresh right now and you can get details from eye witnesses now before they forget, misremember, are influenced by time, other people, the news, an argument with their mom or just the deterioration of the most fallible form of evidence: a person's own recollections. As the person trying to bring your family member's assailant to justice the only thing more important than getting eye witness statements immediately for an investigator is preventing witnesses from leaving before giving a statement.
