I live in nashville. It's so humid here you almost don't need a wet pallet or to even add water to your paint. Just open it up and allow the Nashville soup in. 🤣

Great to see more product reviews from you Vincent! I really trust your views on these products and you have a similar taste as me when it comes to miniature related products. Well, if you can use a word like taste, maybe preference would be better, but anyway the things that are not necessarily better or worse, but simply a matter of individual preference. Thanks for everything you do for us!

I'll keep this in mind if I ever decide to upgrade from my zip-loc container. Trader Joe's in the US sells a Kitchen Cloth, it is like a thin sponge, similar to the style that comes with wet palettes, which are a massive improvement over the wads of paper towels that I have been using. I don't think that they are anti-microbial, but they are washable and reusable.

I think a key quality that we palette's should have is that they are air tight. There is nothing worse than opening a wet palette 5 days after using and then the sponge is so dried and curled up that even if u slightly touch the dry sponge it rips. Also the way the paper is placed on the sponge is important as things get messed up with the paper dries and it curls, on my Matthersons ? STA-wet palette I have a technique whereby I create a thick border around my paper to tuck under the sponge so the paper doesn't curl up when it dries. 1st world problems I guess but improvements in new pallettes are always welcome

I have really the opposite issue with my Redgrass wet palette, the moisture stays so locked in that it wets the paints too much, but I really shouldn't use the same paint after the painting session anyway, so I think it's still better. But yeah, the Redgrass wet pallette stays wet for weeks or even a couple of months if left sealed...

I have a little perspex box with some inset magnets I glued in to keep it closed tight. I use this as a dry palette tray for if I'm working with metallics and need to set them aside for a few hours for whatever reason. Yea, I hate wasting paint when I'm just doing small touchups and swapping between metallics. So... if you leave some metallics in the dry palette section of this, do they remain workable for a while or would it need a better seal?

Hey Vince! I also have this palette, but am finding that the paint on this pallet dries way faster than my old masterson's wet palette with wax paper. I soak the game envy's palette paper for about a minute and live in the humid-ass south so I'm fairly puzzled. Any ideas as to why this is the case? Reactivating paints gives me some chalky texture.

@@VinceVenturella I usually go past that, submerge the paper for a while, and then drain it to about that point with some mild variation. I did notice that you use both of the sponges they provide while I always used one, and for now that little tidbit seems to be doing the trick! If I get more issues then maybe that room is specifically more dry for some reason. Thanks for your time Vince. I super appreciate that. 😎👍

Vince, how long does it take for the specialized paper to start flaking/tearing? Is it any stronger then regular cheap baking paper? I experimented with clear tracing paper, which seemed to react the worst with water - flaked immediatelly after light mixing paint on it with the end of the brush. Baking parchment begins separating/leaving paper flakes in paint after one session, I usually replace the sheet the next day. So wondered if the commercial wet palette paper is more durable, alowing for several day sessions without contaminating the paint with paper particles. Funny, I couldn't find any information on the subject, unless some say just to replace the paper whet it begins to loose quality, wchich I already did for years. There are 50 sheet wet palette paper packs from Army painter or GSF, would theese be worth getting over baking parchment? I'm sure you've tried it all! Thanks!

With a wet pallet, do I want to get the top of the paper wet? Or should I just get the foam wet and the put paper on the wet foam, leaving the top of the paper dry? I seem to be having issues with adjusting to using a wet pallet.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
THe paper itself is dry. The sponge should be soaking wet, you want to see effectively standing water around the side of the sponge. The paper should be dry, its using osmosis to draw the water up through the paper.

I just use the Army Painter one. It doesn't use too much of space on my desk, it works and I change the paper every time I paint anyway. I live in the middle of Europe. If we have the same humidity for a week that is a long time. So I've never figured out how much air I need. I use fairly thick parchment paper (not the AP stuff). It takes a while to soak up the water, but it doesn't dry out quickly or lets the water flow through too much. Works best for me. I don't travel and paint. Changing the lighting conditions sounds like a nightmare to me. But if I would, your pallet would be a consideration. I would fly over and steal it. 👍

I have the worst luck with wet palettes sadly, my home is slightly slanted, I melted my first one (materson which I left too close to heating in winter), the scale 75 one I got has mold issues, I just honestly am near giving up on wet palettes until I move, between not being able to afford gambling on yet another one, the slant part is a biggest issue (workable around but still).
@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy

I’ve had issues with mold in the past too because I live in a humid environment, I put a copper penny in mine and stored it in the fridge and it helped with that. Idk if you’ve tried anything like that, but might be worth a shot.
@nameisbad
@nameisbad Жыл бұрын
@@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy I used copper pennies with my materson but it would rust a tiny bit not enough to be an issue but I think that's why I avoided doing it with my latest one. I should try it again. I do regularly freeze my sponge now, which seems to help somewhat. I do have a question for you or anyone who is willing to ask, but are pro acryl paints incredibly ass on wet palette? I feel like they last only a couple hours if that. Meanwhile kimera, ak, heavy bodied all last ages...
@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy
@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy Жыл бұрын
@@nameisbad I have the pro acryl paints. They separate pretty bad on wet palettes, but I believe it has something to do with their pigments themselves because my scale 75 paints don’t separate as bad on them which are also a matte finish. I have to constantly remix my pro acryl paints if they’re on my wet palette. I love the paints, but they are frustrating to use on the wet palette.
@nameisbad
@nameisbad Жыл бұрын
@@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy Shouldn't it be the medium at fault, pigments are just pigments, medium is what essentially differs how paint brands work. But I'm glad that confirms it's not just me. Yeah they are very nice paints, but all paints have their weaknesses and I guess I just found out theirs. Well except AK interactive 3rd gen, such a weirdly "ok/good" line, hard to fault them... I'll find something tho, eventually the paints will slip :P
@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy
@thatgenericdixienormouspicguy Жыл бұрын
@@nameisbad Yeah you’re right about that. Most likely the medium is the real culprit behind the issues. If you have any other matte mediums you can try that and see if it helps or worsens the separation. I have some of Monument hobbies glaze medium I’ll have to test that out myself to see if that helps. That’s something I didn’t think of until just now. I have some of the AK 3rd gen paints not a bunch, mostly highlight colors I use to mix so I haven’t seen much issues with them, but I tend to not use them on their own.

The only reason I'm stuck on redgrass is they're the only ones whose sheets don't have that weird hydrophobic property that makes your paint bead up. I've tried the GSW and Army Painter ones and both of those bead up. For a while I had to use grease proof paper and started to get used to the beading thing, but as soon as the redgrass sheets were back in stock I jumped back. I worry that one day they'll stop making them.
