Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his KZfaq channel.

Love your videos. I had my Bariatric sleeve surgery on April 27 2021. I losted 25 lbs before surgery. With help from Cleveland Clinic Bariatric team. Now after surgery down 62 lbs. Started at 222.. down to 160 and 5'2. I feel great. My goal is 150. I will be 65 in October. Keeping it off worries me. But with the help from my team they keep me positive. My HgbA1C is now 5.0 the first time in 20 years. Keep being my inspiration.

I had my VSG 11/8; at week 3, I was cleared by my doctor to train at my home gym (it’s a substantial CrossFit-type set-up). I can’t imagine waiting 3 months to train! I started walking immediately after my surgery, but functional fitness is my preference, as it allows me to train around injury (I’ve had multiple neck/back procedures). I’m down 44 lbs as of this morning, and it’s clear I’m causing a “stall/slowdown” on the scale, but I’ve worked out most of my life and know that the trade-off is worth not obsessing over that number vs my measurable performance numbers. I think it definitely helped that I worked out hard even before my surgery. I also prioritize my fluid and protein goals above all else to get through my high level workouts.

Update, 01/08/2022: training has gotten way more fun and intense! I failed to mention, I’m almost 53 years old. I’m sure it helps that I’m down 57 lbs. as of this morning, even with “stalls.” The real miracle for me is that I’m completely off any of my diabetes medication, including insulin, since my VSG! I’d been diagnosed as a Type II as an obese child, so I’ve been battling for over 40 years!

It would have been much better if I seen this specific *2WeightLossFast. Com* a couple of years back. I burned 12 pounds in three weeks up to now. There is certainly still need of exercises even only a few times a week and also the meals to eat must be best. It showed awesome results for me. Undeniably, this is strongly recommended and I also do hope this would w.ork to you too simply because it did to me. .

thanks for covering this. so helpful! I had the sleeve done 3 weeks ago and I struggle with major fatigue. I walk as much as I can daily but it's not much. My weightloss is slow. like 2 pounds each week. I feel like a failure. my doc says it could take another month for my energy to come back. good to have a new perspective on exercise when I am able to get out there and do it.

Really helpful, thank you so much! I've had a sleeve done almost 8-9 months ago. I feel great and have dropped all my excess weight, but would love to start building muscle mass. My dilemma comes from (perhaps an incorrect) understanding that to build muscle you need calories (mostly protein), but if I can't fit in the "recommended" amount of calories (or grams of protein per day) due to surgery, how can I possibly build mass. Am I looking at this with a wrong lens? please advise. Thank you!

Hi Dr Matthew, thank you so much for these videos. There's so much information out there that it's difficult to find a single source as informative as yours. I. Same day discharge in Colombia? You are right to be concerned. There are ways around some of the insurance issues. Are you sure that you've looked at this from every angle? If you like, you can make an appointment with me (insurance will almost definitely cover it) and we can explore this more thoroughly.

Dr. Matthew Weiner, I am a week post surgery and things went well. I spoke to my surgeon about my concern and I was able to spend two nights at the hospital, which were definitely needed since I experienced quite a bit of pain. I am returning to the US on Nov 28th, would you be willing to see me? I know some surgeons won't see you if they were not the ones performing the surgery. I know it is important for the success of the surgery to have a postoperative follow up. Thank you.

Where would a ballet class fit into the "Type of exercise" classification? I'm having a VSG in a month and I don't want to drop my ballet training (part of the reason I'm having the surgery, since right now I'm too heavy to dance without harming my body). I have Ballet class four days a week for a total of 8 hours a week. Also, since you didn't talk about swimming, could you perhaps tell me where that one would fit? I really enjoy Ballet, Swimming and TaeKwonDo, and even though I'm willing to try new things, I'd like to also do those I like. I'm just wondering just how useful they would be.

Hello Dr. Weiner, Since April 16th 2018 I've been hitting the gym everyday and eating right. Friday June 22nd I got a call and an appointment was set for my first consultation for Bariatric Surgery. So my question is, can I achieve muscle mass post Op? I enjoy working out so much that I'm planning on making a career out of my new found passion. My concern is that with the limited amount of food I'll be able to have I will not be able to fuel my body enough to get the results I want. I'm 40 years old and my start weight was 484. My current weight it's 457. I'm feeling better then ever and I'm okay with the weight coming off at the rate it is. I'm gaining muscle mass and can already see and feel the difference. Dr can I ask what are your thoughts on another surgeon’s views that during your first two years of a gastric sleeve surgery you shouldn’t bother go to the gym and work out cos you wont build any muscle as the body is in a catabolic state after the surgery for roughly two years.. My brother is having a sleeve surgery soon and that is worrying me as i thought that after he loses his excess weight he could do weight training and built muscle? Thanks a lot

Dr Weiner You say the sleeve should considered if there has been previous abdominal surgery. What type of surgery would this include. I want the bypass and I've had 5 inches of my sigmoid colon removed due to cancer 4 years ago. Is this low enought not to hinder the bypass surgery?

Probably Rosanne - I would leave this decision up to your surgeon. Usually surgeries like gall bladder removal, appendectomy, belly button and groin hernias and gynecologic surgery don't cause problems.

Hi Dr. Weiner, I am five months post VSG and have been walking 4-5 miles for about a month. I am getting faster and trying to work up to running. I now feel ready to begin weight lifting now, but am worried about making sure I am getting enough calories in. There are days in which I don't eat enough (don't feel hungry) after walking, and get very weak and lightheaded. If I go several days in a row my joints ache and I feel cold and lethargic. I worry that maybe I went too far. I want to push the envelope as far as I can to reach my goal, but don't want to put my body into starvation mode. I can get an idea of how many calories I'm burning while walking/running and adjust my food intake, but I have no idea how to do this with weight lifting. I read online that 5 months post-op 900-1000 calories a day are normal. I assume I need to eat more if I'm exercising? Can you please advise?

Dr. Weiner, I know that you list walking as low to moderate in intensity, but for someone like me who has started this journey at almost 400 pounds, walking briskly is quite the workout for me! Could I consider brisk walking that causes me to sweat and my heart rate to increase quite a bit as weight-reducing? I do have pain in my knees and hips, so I dont' know if I could ever jog...or at least not yet.

I get so confused about working out. If it’s not for weight loss is it just for gaining muscle and maintaining weight? Not walking, but clothes changing working out.

Dr. I had surgery almost 6 weeks ago and the largest incision hasn't healed completely. In your opinion, can I start exercising and if so what can I start with?
