Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his KZfaq channel.

These myths are commonly told everyday by Bariatric Dr's & their staff however I've had no problems or complications after my RNY surgery doing the opposite of these myths Im 13mos post-op & have lost 138lbs & is16lbs from my healthy goal weight. I encourage everyone to follow your Dr's orders but remember everyone's body is different & if eating & drinking at the same time works for you than do what is pleasing to you! I did & my journey is a success so far! Thank you Dr Weiner for your honest & educational videos.....I've learned more from you than my own Dr.😉

oh my gosh! thank you for this! I have been struggling with several of these issues and when I question those at my clinic I am looked at in a judgmental way that I am not following the program ...therefore I am not taking my surgery seriously. Everyone has questions, even if it's just knowing the why. I no longer feel comfortable talking with my clinic about things and look elsewhere.

I am so glad you touched on getting mostly veggies after month 3. I am 14 mos out and I wanted to shift to a vegetarian based diet I visit a lot of WLS forms on Facebook and they all drive home the same message no carbs and this from people 3 years and beyond out from surgery. I tell them fruits like berries are great low carb fruits with antioxidants great for the body and they all tell me to stay away from fruit and that too much fruit will cause us to gain weight. And protein first cause our bodies need 80 grams of protein a day for the rest of our lives. It's so much info out there that can confuse us so thanks for sharing.

You really do have to find what works for you. I love the fact you encourage listening to your own body. I love intuitive eating. I do listening to several different Drs and people who have lost a lot of weight. Then I use my own judgment usually thru trial and error as to what makes sense and what works in my own life. Love the eat your veggies first concept. Makes perfect sense to me besides my tummy loves them. Somethings hit like a brick after I eat them. I have lost 85 pounds since July 2 2021 my labs are good. I have 27 pounds to go and have NEVER felt better. I just wish Dr Weiner had more videos!

Dr Weiner, I have learned a lot from your videos. I just went to my first seminar about weight loss surgery. I will be making my first appt soon. I have been trying to decide between sleeve or bypass. I'm 5'51/2 and weigh 245. I have diastolic CHF, sleep apnea and back and knee pain. I also have had problems with foot pain. I'm a nurse on a busy medical floor so it would improve my job if I could move better. I am going to order your book. I also plan to watch all your videos. The hardest change for me will be giving up diet pop but I plan to watch your video about that as well. Thank you for making all these videos.

Think about that pop as posion. That's what it is. It's over loaded w/sugar. Sugar is poison to your body. They contain poinson, aspertame. Diet soda's have the highest level. It's a slow kill. When I first tasted bottle water, I was hooked. Walmart brand. Labels so tiny I can't read it, but tried Nestle and it tastes creamy yuck. They say water flushings out fat, not sure but if your pee is dark that's bad, drink water instead and watch how it lightens up. The way nurses run, I'm surprised any of you are over weight, has to be your diet and those killer soda's. You'll feel so much better when you start water & stop the soda's. You adjust fast.

Oh boy. I hope I don’t have the fat gene. 😬 I was sleeved on 8-26-19 and I’ve lost 11.8 lbs as of today 9-2-19. I’m following my program as prescribed and I feel great. I really want to be successful. Prior to surgery I had lost 115 lbs on my own by cutting out soda and sugar, limiting my portions, just watching what I eat. I wasn’t always successful and I found myself having junk food Fridays/weekends. I also started doing cardio. From my birthday in November of 2018 through February of 2019 I gained about 40 lbs back and THAT’s when decided to pursue bariatric surgery. I’m a few pounds away from the weight I was at my birthday. I believe since I was able to keep a large amount of weight off for three years I’ll be able to maintain a normal, healthy weight after surgery.

Thank you for making these informative videos! I am a 59 year old male weighing 408 pds. Five years ago I had lap band surgery by another surgeon. It was great a first, I went from 393 down to 335 but then the weight started creeping back up to an all time high. Although I don't eat/drink nearly as much as I used to, my weight keeps going up. I'm sure it's probably from my bad food choices. I still love my carbs. I'm contemplating a gastric sleeve but after watching your video, I'm afraid that after a year or two, I would be right back to eating my carbs and gaining weight. Can you recommend a diet that I could try before I make a decision about the sleeve? Also, what hospitals do you work out of in the Detroit area? Thank you very much! Larry Meyers Eastpointe

Dr Weiner, how many grams of protein are sufficient eight months post-op? Should I increase protein after skin removal surgery? I have now lost 110 pounds and am SO grateful for your videos. I’m rewatching all of them this week to keep my head in the game. I read “A Pound of Cure” and it is fantastic - but you should consider a book specifically for WLS patients. So many times I had to come back and scroll through video after video to find the piece of info I was looking for (and couldn’t remember which video addressed it).

Hi Dr Weiner. Really enjoyed your video. I know it's a couple years old, but I hope you're still reading comments. Quick question. I understand the content regarding eating and drinking at the same time. You address the issue of it being uncomfortable. However what I keep hearing is that water makes food wash through the pouch more quickly, causing more frequent hunger. Is there truth to that? You didn't really address it in the video. Thank you so much. Again, great video.

I've listened to my patients over the years and recognized that many of the things that I was telling them to do or not do did not cause any issues, so I started focusing on the things that did seem to work (like eating lots of vegetables).Medicine and Surgery are more of an art than a science, this explains the wide variation in recommendations from practice to practice.

I love your videos, and have watched most of them. I am 4 1/2 months out from RNY, and would love to eat more vegetables, but I have to work at getting the protein in. Don't think I could make my 60-80g of protein without those protein drinks. I try for the higher end because my bloodwork pre and post op has always come up low on protein. I was off all artificial sweeteners for 5 years and I hate that they are in the drinks and things I am using now. If I cook beef in the crockpot with liquid that works, but other meats are hard to eat. Fish works OK too. It's funny I find salad easy to eat, but I am always afraid of eating too much of it, and not having room for my protein. -One myth I would love to hear you address, if it is a myth...is that you won't lose weight if you don't eat enough because your body goes into starvation mode. - Another question, in your Pound of Cure book do you directly address how it works for Bariatric patients, or is the presentation geared more for those who haven't had surgery? Thanks and keep the videos coming, they are very informative.
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 9 жыл бұрын
NYMom Yes, you will lose less weight after surgery if you don't eat - this is not a myth. I address this in the book and talk a lot about your metabolic thermostat. The book is written for anyone and does not address the issues that postop patients have with getting enough to eat. However, you are not going to feel this way forever, within a year to 18 months, you will be able to eat plenty and will be just like everyone else trying to eat less, not more, so the book will be extremely relevant to you in a few months. Your difficulty eating meat is common and should resolve within 9-12 months of surgery.

Why is diet soda bad if other zero calorie drinks are ok? Is it because of the artificial sweeteners and other chemicals that are in it? I’ve heard before that diet soda can still cause weight gain, but am having trouble understanding why, I guess. +Dr. Matthew Weiner Thanks for your reply, I have watched all of your video's and found them all interesting and informative. I was bypassed in February. At my particular obesity centre, the surgeons require a two week preoperative diet, consisting of milk, not sure if you've come across this in the US. Here in the UK, it's standard in a few hospitals, unless the patient is dairy intolerant of course. My surgeon told me that it is safer if the liver is well shrunken at the time of surgery. It is interesting how opinions differ between consultants. I couldn't be happier with my new tool. Thanks again.

Great information. I can't believe how many people say that your pouch stretches as time progresses. Because I'm diabetic, I thought I was going to have the gastric bypass procedure, but when my surgeon saw that I take antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds and sleep meds, he felt that the sleeve would be a better choice for me. He explained to me that he has a couple of female patients that became so depressed with their gastric bypass, that he reversed the gastric bypass procedure for these patients. I thought that both gastric and the sleeve were irreversible. What's your experience with WLS and antidepressants and sleep medication?

Watch out for an upcoming video on "Stomach Stretching" - or what it really is. I have tons of patients on antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds - these usually don't impact my surgery recomendation, but I certainly respect what your surgeon is saying and think there's merit to his reasoning.

After I eat I,m starving in 10 minutes. All protein.heavy protein whatever it is i,m starving. I,m really feeling like a failure. My Goal weight is 160 But the 180 is not moving. I find myself snacking on weight watcher snacks,dry cereal etc. I try to keep my calories under 1000. Some days I may eat 1 meal and Exercise all day. I,ve lost all the weight from the waist up and now I guess I have 180 pounds of behind and legs. I take seizure meds and I,ve had 2 knee replacements. What do I do. how much am I supposed to eataaa/ I,m lost

Hello Dr. Weiner!! I was wondering if you consider gastric bypass Roux-en-Y patients never being able to use NSAID'S (Advil, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Aspirins, etc. and other such anti-inflammatory drugs) a myth also? Dr. Matthew Weiner Hello Dr. Weiner!! With regards to NSAID's, would using a topical cream such as Voltaren on my osteoarthritic knees, still pose the same risk as it could be for orally ingested NSAID's?? I know that my knees are a bit far from my pouch and I just assumed that any absorbed into my skin (unless I am regularly swimming in it, as one pharmacist put it) would have lost its potency by the time it reached my pouch after going through my bloodstream. Is it a bit of a stretch to think that topical creams would carry the same risk as an oral NSAID, or is it a legitimate concern in your opinion??
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 9 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a legitimate concern. I don't forbid my patients from taking them at all - I allow them to take them every now and then for minor aches and pains, but discourage the use of them daily. This is the way I handle this with my patients, I recommend that you discuss it with your surgeon though.

Dr Weiner, I think your ideas sound great but I would like to read evidence or studies that support this information. Most of the evidence based research around says that people regain their weight due to stretching of the sleeve over time. The minimizer band has been designed to prevent this but, as it is still so new there is not much data to support this theory. I am having VSG surgery in August (in Australia) and would really like to find out more about your methods. Can you direct me to any medical journals or studies that can demonstrate your points please? Thank you kindly :)

Hi. Could you please clarify for me about drinking carbonated drinks? When I first heard no carbonated drinks that was more wording to me than not eating unhealthy foods. I feel as though I'm addicted to the carbonation in drinks rather than the sugar. i am diabetic and only drink coke zero and soda water. The problem is I can in a day easily drink at least 1litre or more. I feel that poorly controlled blood sugars making me thirsty and usually only soda water will quench my thirst. So I guess my question is would it be had to incorporate low calorie drinksnsuch as diet coke into a post op diet once healed. Would diet drinks or soda water be ok occasionally in social situations. Also I was wondering if it was possible to have dumping syndrome with out wls? I haven't had wls but on occassion had very similar symptoms to dumping. Servers abdominal and stomach pains that take an hour or more to pass, nausea and vomiting and sweats? Thanks😊
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 6 жыл бұрын
I recommend avoiding artificial sweeteners as much as possible, but don't think that carbonation is dangerous. This basically leaves you with club soda which is just plain water with bubbles. Your perception that you can only quench your thirst with carbonation is just that, a perception, not reality. Your stomach pains are complicated but would probably disappear if you cleaned up your diet and eat like I describe in my book.

oh oh oh! I am dancing with joy! EAT YOUR VEGETABLES FIRST! When I had my early struggles post RNY- I could not deal with meat-- and I skulked away in the dark and began my love affair with Legumes- Lentils to be specific- they saved me- they still do- and all the veg, and now thanks to you- I no longer fear fruit! and I have fallen in love all over again with my 4.5 year season, to become the best and strongest me I can be again! Detox was phenomenal- I could see my body changing before my eyes just like after RNY in 2009. I only have to take off 10-15 and it is easily done now- thanks to A Pound of Cure!

Yes, it's a very frustrating experience being told to consume tons of protein, but not being physically able to. Beans and nuts provide quality protein, are healthier for you and go down really easily after surgery.

Dr Weiner, Here I find myself writing to you again, This time is to let you know I am the one that lives in the upper peninsula, And Dr English was going to do the sleeve on me, Well he has left to go to Tennesse. So I was going to have his Partner do the surgery, after I had got over the hurt of him leaving because he was the best in my book. Then last month I got another phone call telling me that Dr English partner is also leaving, I was crushed , I have waited and worked so hard to have this done, I want a life that I can be part of my family and grandkids, to be able to do things i have not done in yrs because of my weight. So then I got on the phone with your office, because by this time already had done the research on you. and you were right up there with Dr English, Well when I called the office I had questions and I felt as though I was rushed through the call and I got absolutly no questions answered, I asked should I bring my refferal from my regular doctor that reccommends me to have the surgery, and she was like well yeah you can, now I know in order to have the surgery you have to have the referal from your doctor. I set up the appointment for October 15th. I am still UNCLEAR what to bring or what to expect from this appt with you. I have bcbs state of michigan they pay 100% of the surgery, unless there is some out of pocket expensive. My insurance does not reqiure a weight loss before the surgery. I guess the reason I am writing you here is because you had gotten back with me before, you are an 8 hour drive from me. I wanted them to tell me everything that I needed to bring to the first appt, so I didnt have to worry about getting anything back to you , Thanks for reading, I am unclear as to weather i keep this appt or not. I am unsure I didn't like the phone conversation, I had with your office, I feel as though they could have given better information. Thanks for your time

Annie, sorry about the trouble with the office. It's likely we were in the middle of what can be a very busy clinic. I recommend that you have Dr. English's office forward all the paperwork that they have to my office first. The reason that my staff was unsure of what would be needed is because this is my decision - some people need a cardiac clearance, others don't, some need pulmonary clearance or sleep studies, others don't. Even though you've been through the process with Dr. English, I will be looking at you as a completely new patient and may order tests or studies that he did not. I'm always hesitant to operate on patients who live so far away since you will need to see me at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and one year after the surgery. There is a good group up north who may be a better option for you since they are so much closer - this is about so much more than just the surgery and you will need regular appointments afterward to ensure the best results. I'm happy to see you for a consultation and will operate on you if we both agree that it's your best option. Making this decision will be the primary focus of our first visit on Oct. 15th if you decide to come down as well as setting expectations for life after surgery and ensuring that you have a full understanding of the lifestyle changes necessary for maximal success. If you do decide to cancel the appointment, please do it sooner rather than later since I set aside 30-45 minutes for new patients and there is a 4 week wait for new patient appointments and we will be able to fill this slot if you give us enough notice. Dr. Weiner

Hi thank you for getting back with me . I completely understand about your office being busy but when I had asked if I bring my paper work that is needed for you to see they could not say yes or know, I also understand about living so far away from you. my brother lives down in that area and I will be staying with him for at least a month or so , so seeing you will not be a problem. I know this is a life changing journey and I am ready for it more then life. because right now DR I have no life. I am willing to go through any test that you would want me to go through, I will jump through hoops if I have to. I was let down by both doctors up here they both left and they have no others to replace them as of today, I am willing to travel my husband and I do alot of that so traveling to see you will not be an issue. I have done my research on you and I am completely satisfied with your results, not only as a surgeon for weight loss but your paitance dr manners. I will keep my appointment and I will have the office send all my paper work down, I will call your office on monday to apologize to your staff as I am sure they were busy like you said, I look forward to seeing you Oct 15th Thank you Sincerely Annie

Since you feel that WLS is a one shot chance, do you believe that after a regain a patient cannot lose that weight again?

I had the same question. I’ve learned so much after surgery and after weight regain. It’s discouraging to think that I missed my opportunity to lose the weight and can’t lose the weight I’ve regained. Dr., are you sure about this? Why do you think so?
