Real Families

6 жыл бұрын

It’s the penultimate day in the House of Tiny Tearaways, and Isaac Murphy has a morning set back with breakfast. Michelle Wright is getting stressed about a trip away from the house, and Dr Tanya Bryon teaches her some techniques to manage the boys when they're out and about. Alyson and Richard Hadley still cannot agree on their parental contract.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman guides the audience through a week-long journey at TV’s first ever child and parent behaviour refuge.
During their stay at the House of Tiny Tearaways, three families live together, while child psychologist Dr Tanya Byron works with both parents and children to solve issues around fussy eating, sleeping habits, and public tantrums - and she'll challenge the parents to get to the root of the problems they're experiencing raising their children.
With Dr Tanya Byron's help and advice, the hope is that the families will learn useful pedagogy techniques and gain new insights, giving them long-lasting support though the parenting challenges they're facing.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

Alyson has received her share of criticism this week for her own family situation but I have appreciated seeing how kind she is with Michelle and her boys. She presents as a truly caring and helpful person that is devoted to her friends. The extra peptalks and nudges Alyson passes onto Michelle are so helpful for someone going it alone.

It seems like Allison goes around trying to tell the other parents how to deal but does not work on her own issues. She also tries to get the other kids to do what is wanted of them instead of working on how she deals with her daughter. And why are all these bigger toddlers with bottles and paci's? It is like trying to keep them as a baby and they are not.
@heatherossbrandy
@heatherossbrandy 4 жыл бұрын
The bottles/paci's are obvious to the psych., so she has determined in which order these issues need to be addressed. It appears she has determined that tackling the bottle/paci issues in conjunction with their more serious issues would be counter-productive; in some instances, she may possibly believe it would be a 'too much, too soon', kind of thing, which will disallow success. Small (baby-steps) of success are far more productive because they create a pattern of success that each new task is built upon, which allows for continuous success, rather than trying for 'leaps and bounds', which are as unstable as they sound, so they are risks being taken, which set up the child for failure. Taking measured attempts at achievable successes allow the child to build up its confidence, and in-turn its own solid path of continued successes! I love it!

If you're the kind of person who needs to cry or feels compelled to cry - cry. It WILL be relieving, if not right away - then soon. It's a massive relief of stress. I had a mom who wasn't a crier, but she was so repressed - even to the point of almost denying events. She never understood a good cry, she used to think it was a sign of being unhealthy emotionally - but it's not really.

Michelle reminds me of my Glaswegian adopted sister. The Scottish women have the patience of saints, but my sister could be a total mama Bear when it came to her children. I don’t know what it is about Scottish women, but they seem to be the most nurturing and patient with their family, but cross them and you better look out. It takes a lot to get them riled up, but if you do!! Oh boy. I hope everything worked out for her and her boys. As well as the other families. Michelle just really touched my heart so much. I haven’t seen my adopted family since 2010!!

If Lucy was my daughter? I'd cry, too! Honestly, I have no idea how on earth these people let their children get so out of control in the first place. Out of my three children (who now range in age from 30 to 22), I have had a total of 2 temper tantrums. One out of the oldest and one out of the youngest. I sat them down, walked away, and kept walking until they stopped their foolishness. (I do not participate in the shrieking sessions some parents seem to ask for on the daily!)

Ashlie, I couldn't agree with you more. It seems you turn around and they're all away at Uni and have places of their own. The child can not be the centre of attention. It's such a common problem these days, and it leaves children thinking they're ruling the roost and they don't like that. The reason they push the boundaries is to find out where they are. It's up to us to show them and have them behave. There are no bad kids, etc...

I don't think there is any way that Richard & Alison will stay together. The issue will end up being that she will try to keep Lucy from him if he leaves. He is not being unfair for wanting THEIR daughter to have a morning & nighttime routine... & thru the whole show that's the only thing he asked for & she's still arguing. I do not think that Alison will stick w/ anything that she has been taught in the 6 days cause it's not what she truly wants. She wants her daughter to be distressed so that she can come running. All the families I've seen on these shows have done so much to change the way their children are acting. With the exception of 1 mom...ALISON. she don't want things to be different... So they won't.

I think even in him saying I want this and pointing out that it’s so fair because he’s being flexible for the rest of the time is also a bit controlling. Instead of saying can we agree, he’s putting his foot down saying “I need THIS so that I can feel comfortable” and you should agree. It’s the approach.

One wonders what it was that Lucy's mom was so resistant to - as in the contract and the idea of a schedule (a routine for her child's day to day activities. Why such a negative reaction?) The problem in that family is not the kid - it's the parents. Lucy's is simply one symptom of the dysfunctional dynamic here. As per usual.

It is just an other animal...especially children...Look up also such big names like John Dewey, Wilhelm Wundt, Edward Thorndike (Edward Thorndike (1898) is famous in psychology for his work on learning theory that lead to the development of operant conditioning within behaviorism. Whereas classical conditioning depends on developing associations between events, operant conditioning involves learning from the consequences of our behavior.) Yeeah, but it depends on certain things imo. Two people with different strengths can compliment each other, and two people who are willing to learn from one another can broaden their horizons and develop as people. However, I think core shared values is the key. You could have a partner very similar in personality(for example, quiet, bookish, calm), but nothing in common interests wise, values wise ect. I always try and look for people with similar values to mine as I feel without that anything else just won't be enough.

This really infuriates me ,,, how parents are so stupid they should never have kids... feel so sorry for the kids, they are a blank canvas when born and the parents turn them into little monsters, such a shame..

Squid Nugget that's interesting, I find him to make a lot of sense and that Allison is the frustrating one. She never listens and twists everything he says. It's infuriating to watch.

The woman who suffered from post natal depression and had to spend nine months away from her family/children - Paula, I believe - it's easy to empathize with her. Still, she's been so much luckier than all the divorced fathers that don't get to see their children, that lose their families the same. For some reason, however, there's little sympathy or empathy for those men. Rather, they're often shamed for "leaving the family". If they just up and left, fine, but most of them have been forcefully evicted from their families and the lives of their children. No wonder so many of them kill themselves.

I wish the narrator would stop implying that Lucy is to blame for her parents clearly being on the verge of breaking up/ It is never the childs fault when adults split, and saying it is is so damaging. She is three. She doesn't have a behaviour problem, she has an arguing parents problem, and she dooesn't know how else to deal with it because she is three. She is just reacting.

Richard and Tanya will not last. He doesn’t care to make it work with her and she’s just sticking around for her daughters sake, you can tell. Just end it and get on with life.

Can you blame him? Allison doesn’t want him to have a relationship with his daughter. I understand what she went thru as a child is the most horrible thing a child can experience, but she’s suffocating Lucy and pushing Richard out and doesn’t respect him or his input on parenting!
