Excellent interview Kalie. You are SUCH a great listener, and you respectfully allow your guest to give a complete response. Most people interrupt. (I know I probably would because another question pops in my head). Becky is lovely... really appreciate her experience and points of view. She has excellent advice about telling people what you do. That's something that is really hard for a lot of people... even some Americans. I love that she speaks with her hands... I do it all the time.

I have to clarify something about when a portuguese says they dont speak english yet do. The thing is, most of us UNDERSTAND english quite well, in wrtten and spoken form. Where most of us struggle is with spoken english, and not so much on what to say, our english vocabulary can be pretty good, but the pronounciation. And many feel embaraced in speaking broken english. And again this broken english is not so much lack of lexicon but a somewhat difficulty to pronounce english since there are a lot of english phonems that dont exist in portuguese and vice-versa. Basically, most portuguese are conversational in english but fewer are fluent. But we tend to understand english very well.

Thanks for sharing, Carlos. Honestly, we've not come across many Portuguese people that don't speak English. It's more common that people do than they don't. Portugal ranks very highly in Europe when it comes to this. Side note - An awesome thing happened to me today at the grocery story. The cashier overheard Kalie and I speaking English and he told us the amount due in English. I responded to him in Portuguese and asked him a question. Instead of him responding back in English, which happens a lot, we switched fully back to Portuguese and continued the transaction. I really appreciate that. - Josh

I've lived in a rural area all my life. I've been to Lisbon twice, as well as most of the rest of Portugal, and if I had to live in a city it would absolutely be Lisbon. I think it's maybe because there are many people working there who are from rural villages, I don't know, but it sure does not have a huge city vibe, it's very comfortable and down to earth.

I never desired to live in a city since moving to the DC area 20 years ago, too busy, and hectic. Lisbon Is perfect because it’s not as hectic or large as DC, less traffic, and I so much want to be apart of its upcoming future, and buy my first home there before the door shuts on the affordability that’s now, or something changes with the visa process. This would actually be like making it to your dream and living it moving there.

It is expensive in America depending on where you live. Not only that, property tax can be very high as well. I own a 760 square foot condo in Anchorage Alaska and my property taxes is $2,000 a year. My sister’s boyfriend owned a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom double story house with a 3 car garage and he pays $7,000 USD a year for property tax. Both of us own the property outright but if that wasn’t the case it would be very costly along with monthly utility expenses.

Interesting; the kind of content that you don't really get to hear from other places which just have canned questions. Thanks for that. Thank you. The video interviews we've done in the past 2 years esp on Portugal don't have canned questions really as much as it is a conversation about someone experience. I'm trying to get some clarity on my situation if anyone knows. I have dual citizenship (US and Italian) and I plan to move to Portugal with my family. My wife doesn't currently have Italian citizenship but she will get it eventually. When we make the move will she need to apply individually for residency through a D7 visa even though her husband and daughter have an EU passport?
@lucchese20
@lucchese20 Жыл бұрын
Hi Justin-I’m in a similar situation. I have dual Italian/EU + USA citizenship but spouse is USA-only. I believe the answer to your question has to do (in part) with timing. You say your wife will get Italian citizenship ‘eventually.’ If your wife gets IT citizenship before your move to PT, then like you she’s be accepted into PT as an EU citizen. If she is not yet an IT/EU citizen when you relocate to PT, then she can get the D7 visa or the D6 (family reunification) visa. I’ve heard getting the D6 is just as laborious as the D7 but can’t verify if that’s true or not. Hope some of this help. Salve!
@ppietrap3876
@ppietrap3876 Жыл бұрын
Any non EU citizen will require a visa to stay here as a resident, being married is not enough. What you could do is apply for FAMILY REUNIFICATION, but I believe that can only be started after you are here and with an official residency, which means you cannot both come at the same time.
@michaeldiamond6873
@michaeldiamond6873 Жыл бұрын
@@ppietrap3876 I have US & German citizenship, my spouse only US. We came at the same time. I got my residency certificate at the local Camara after 1 month. With that, my spouse was then able to apply for D6. Only holdup was getting a SEF appt, which took a few months. After that, visa was approved!
@ppietrap3876
@ppietrap3876 Жыл бұрын
@@michaeldiamond6873 I thought the visa was given through the consulate so that people could then travel (otherwise you would be in the country under false pretence), and the SEF appointment afterwards would be to approve residence. Anyway, that does simplify life.
@michaeldiamond6873
@michaeldiamond6873 Жыл бұрын
@@ppietrap3876 An EU citizen only has to apply to the local Camara. You need to show your local lease. We then applied for the family reunification for my spouse. 1st SEF appt available was in 4 months. Since SEF was backed up due to covid, proof of upcoming SEF appt is enough to be able to stay in Portugal past the 90-day tourist limit. The spouse residency is tied to mine, so we both can stay 5 years. Technically you're not supposed to travel until after SEF appt, but if you stay in the EU, nobody looks.

The tourist-y part of Lisboa can be expensive if you stick to the tourist traps. The solution to find affordable prices is to ask a local. The trick is always to go where the locals go. If India refuses to allow a Portuguese citizens to buy a house or live legally in India, do Indians think they are going to Portugal and just breeze thru with whatever burocratic stuff they need or want? What a joke. Furthermore, there are the language barriers which complicate things even more. Most foreigners do not attempt to learn or speak Portuguese, and expect all our public government employees to speak English in a Portuguese language country. Ive been to India 3 x's and just to buy a train ticket was a burucratic mess let alone real burocratic matters! It was such when I was last there, and I doubt it has changed for the better.

It's funny how KZfaqrs only tell you about the positives. There is no paradise on earth, including Portugal. Although Portuguese love to pat themselves on the back , crime is under reported and is a lot of racism against black and brown people. The bureaucracy will drive you mad and many Portuguese don't like foreigners, especially non white ones Don't take me as a hater, I just lived there and I learned the language. When you don't speak the language, you miss out on so much of the culture. Americans love to live in foreign countries and not learn the language. That's not a good idea. Portugal is cheap, beautiful and they have good wine, but please do your research before uprooting your family because KZfaqrs are saying that Portugal is paradise on earth. It isn't...no country is. Good luck!
