While the majority of the top consulting firms’ new hires still come straight from university, the share of Young Professional who join a consulting firm with a couple of years of previous work experience is on the rise.
In this video, I lay out for you what you need to know if you want to apply to McKinsey, BCG or Bain as an experienced hire, i.e., with previous work experience. While they initially carry out similar tasks, the career paths of experienced hires and graduate hires differ to a certain extent though, which differences you ought to be aware of when applying as an experienced professional. Joining a top consulting firm with work experience comes with some pros, but also certain cons.
In the video, I will also explain to you how your motivation to join a consulting firm as an experienced professional may mismatch McKinsey’s, BCG’s and Bain’s motivation to look for candidates with previous work experience. Concluding from this, I share with you my tips for your application as an experienced hire and tell you what to emphasize (and what to maybe hide…). At the end of the video, I reveal to you an out-of-the-box tip on an alternative route to become a consultant as a Young Professional with previous work experience…

Great video! I'm an experienced hire with 10 years experience in the energy/mining industry (7 different roles) and I'm wanting to get the CV right. With the "one pager" being standard within the industry, can you tell me if experienced professionals are expected to parse down their CV to fit this format? Looking forwards to your throught.

Hi Devin, thanks! Honestly, I do not know why some people proclaim the "one page CV" rule like an iron manifesto. I myself have ALWAYS applied with a 2-page CV and have been invited to interviews with everyone. I have recently even seen the CV of a Strategy& intern, she also used two pages but it was really really good 🔥 So besides format, content still matters too. Obviously, do this only if you have really a lot of relevant stuff to share on yourself, which is what a one-page CV forces you to do. Btw I do not want to go too commercial here on my channel 😉 but if you feel unsure, I offer CV screenings as part of my coachings. Good luck with your coming career change! 💪

Hi Jack, I have around 4 years of work experience already and will be joining a master's program in luxury brand management this September. Ideally, I would like to work in the luxury vertical of Bain and other consulting companies. Do you think I should apply for the expert role at the same or as a generalist?

Hi Karthik Sounds like a plan! 👍 It depends. It sounds as if you want to go into consulting NOT to try out different fields, but to deepen your expertise in luxury brand management. That's good. In this case, I would suggest that you directly reach out to BCG's Consumer Goods practice. You can then 1. Either apply for the consultant track in the consumer goods practice (to avoid the generalist consultant track which everybody is applying for and where competition might be somewhat higher 2. Or discuss other expert roles that may fit for you besides the consulting track. So if you know you do not want to be a generalist, MBB will appreciate that and you slightly increase your odds if you express your interest and expertise in a specific field! What if you have 2 doctoral grades and 8yrs work experience? Does this matter in hiring? Or is experienced hire always the same?

Yes, for sure this will matter in the recruiting process, less so the double degree, but 8 years of work experience is a lot. At the end of the video, I mention that with >5 years of work experience, you should expect some sort of personalized recruiting process. If you are interested to change career, I suggest you call HR and discuss your entry options.

And is your individual cv presented to the client before they hire you? Or are the individuals anonymous to the client if they are below partner level?

Good question! When consulting firms submit their project proposals, they also attach the CVs of all suggested consulting team members. This includes the "lower consultant levels", too. However, by the time the project is assigned and set to start, very often the suggested team is not anymore available entirely, because consultants got on other projects in the meantime. If the client is not used to these frequent changes, sometimes this causes trouble. Generally though, consultants are hired as powerful working machines, and partners for their specific experience... 😉

Is the recruitment process for PhDs (in management consulting) On campus (university) or Off campus?

Generally, you can take both routes. To be safe, I suggest though you a) call up the recruiters in the local office(s) you want to apply to and b) double-check with the career service or consulting club of your university.

Whould you say "getting a steeper learning curve" is valid reason for consulting?! This is the case for me...

Yes, absolutely. Has also been a key reason for myself to get into consulting. Mind you though, a non-insignificant factor contributing to the steepness of the learning curve is the fact that in consulting you essentially work the hours of two "normal" jobs... Hi Anand, digital consulting services are one of the greatest growth drivers for the consulting industry, hence with a background in either IT or tech (overlaps/differences to be defined) you generally are in a good position to try a transition into consulting. However, McKinsey hires ~1% of its applicants (see here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asiAn5x1t7C4hmw.html), so in order to be an attractive candidate for the leading MBB consulting firms, you will need to bring further distinctive features (besides a background in IT).
