Chuckl33 Aspartame is a very well tested substitute and it's only dangerous if you drink like 8L of diet coke a day. Though there are other chemicals in diet/zero coke which are worse for your health than aspartame.

Aspartame (which is the sweetener in coke zero) is just a combination between 2 amino acids (aspartic acid and phenylalanine) that are found naturally in the body and other foods aswell. Aspartame is broken down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol and it is not in any way harder for the body to break down aspartame compared to sugar.

Up until that point you burn reserves of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) stored in your cells, which are refilled by your mitochondria when you rest. Of course this doesn't affect your argument, but it's a common misconception that i think requires some correction.

You're of course still right about it not being pure sugar - this is in fact quite obvious, as sugar doesn't naturally taste like Coca Cola. There are aroma ingredients in there, coloring and phosphorous acid.

It's basically high fructose corn syrup. 55% fructose, 42%glucose, the same ratio in natural honey. The high fructose corn syrup is the main ingredient used to make coke and is where all the sugar comes from. It's left behind after all the water is boiled off.

Well I think for a lot of people its not so "simple." Its like weight loss...on paper, its simple. Don't eat so much, move more...adopt a new lifestyle and lose weight but still so many people can't get it done. When you say something inane such as "simply drink water" you're working off the assumption that people don't have an addiction to sugar or soda in general. This is simple...if you love Coke and it isn't killing you with obesity and diabetes...drink it. If you are obese and/or facing diabetes but still love Coke...drink Coke zero or diet coke and if you can take it or leave it...or if you are ready to give it up...drink water instead.
