In this video I introduce the most simple form of experimental error analysis (actual and percentage error). This is required for all laboratory experiments until perhaps second year in university. Therafter a technique of adding errors in quadrature is required.

Just wanted to let you know that over 9 years after you made this video you are still helping people, thank your for that.

At 3:53, if 1.2 m is measured as 1 m + 20 cm using the same meter stick, won't the errors for 1 m and 20 cm measurements be separate?

Well yes and no. You cannot just do that where you are using a number of different measurements as part of a formula in order to analyse or calculate some other quantity. Here you will require both actual and percentage error. Alternatively of course you can use partial derivatives to estimate the error in your measurements.

Thank you for your feedback! As a matter of interest, if you're striving for the highest quality error analysis then the final formula I wrote is what you require; this is nothing other than the definition of the change in a multivariable function - see minute 5 here if that's new Thermodynamics 6 : Heat Capacity . In English it's the sum of the rate of change of the function WRT each variable multiplied by the change in each variable; which hopefully should make some sense.
