The first engine, not counting lawn mowers, was a Kohler K91 4hp cast iron block on a homebuit go-cart. I was in 8th grade and was trying to run it on high compression and Klotz nitromethane. It was ported, had a big chainsaw carb, milled head/thin copper head gasket and a scoop to duct more air across the cylinder to help keep it cool. My buddies that would ride it called that engine the "blue flame special" because of the long bluish exhaust flame from its straight pipe.

You guys should consider a straight 8 build. They've done all of the big three straight 6's, and GM's SBC V6. Some newer V6 (3800), and GM's newer turbo inline 4's would be cool too.

Disagree on one answer. As a mechanical engineer, I have graphed the ramp profiles of comparable specs at .050ths of a Comp Cams Exteme Energy hydraulic roller vs. Extreme Energy solid roller. The solid roller has a much steeper/faster ramp speed, which is evident by its overall smaller total duration to duration at .050ths ratio. It makes sense that a hydraulic roller cannot handle the faster ramp speed a solid roller cam. The best part about using a solid roller lifter on a hydraulic roller cam profile is that you can get away with less seat spring pressure (because of the slower lobe ramp speed), which helps everything live longer in street applications.
@fmsracing442
@fmsracing442 4 ай бұрын
If you want to do this, I recommend a custom grind cam on a billet core using a cast iron distributor gear. Comp Cams will make a custom cam with a hydraulic profile on a billet core. In my testing all this extra cost is worth 10-15 hp and longer street life.

I have questions. 1. When you knife edge a crank do you reduce engine torque output and does it weaken the crank? 2. When you off set the crankshaft does it weaken the crank also by how much if you grind? 3. What’s the difference between normal bearings and racing bearings and do they reduce friction on the engine?

Still in love with you guys for making that ford inline 6 300ci turbo. From 90hp to 400something was insane. That was a super budget friendly engine. Would love to see that one power a car or truck. Did it make it in that old truck if so we didn’t see it drive! Please get these engines in vehicles or pass them off to your other team member who are building cool cars! I see trucks and cars for sale now on the used market with 300k miles so we are definitely all driving alot!

I have a 455 olds that I am rebuilding . When assembling , the cam was tight. I mean tap in with hammer. Thats how machine shop guy said it was a little tight. He said to turn with ratchet until I can turn with fingers. Another machining guy told me to scape surface of tight cam bearing until loosened. I was taught cam should turn with fingers. What are your thoughts. Sorry about length of question.
@craighansen7594
@craighansen7594 4 ай бұрын
Take the old stock cam and cut angled cutter grooves on the journal that corresponds with the tight spot. Use your cam/cutter to trim the offending bearing by hand rotating it as you slowly feed it into the tight spot. Remove it frequently to clean debris and use thread cutter lube. It should only take a few thousandths of an inch. If a slight trim doesn't free it up definitely go back yo your machinist.

Pat, I know your also a Michigander, from what area of the Mitt are you from? (I also could hear the accent lol, I know it well.
