Pat and Frankie upgrade some internal components to make our blue oval beast more durable under boost. When it’s back together we will see what our changes make on the engine dyno, but when we turn up the power on our 460 Big Block Ford, things don’t go as smoothly as they would like!

You guys are hilarious. Ever since Pat came on years ago, and eventually Frankie, the show has gotten better and better. More jokes. more wit and a not so serious but serious engine building vibe. I'm always super stoked to see what shenanigans you guys are up to and which awesome build is going to be featured. You've set the bar. Keep it up guys!! P.S: You guys should really broaden your scope. I'm a Ford guy through and through but here's a whole lot of import engine power that you could show as well. The 2J (for a very well known example) is one that no domestic homer can ever say is not powerful/interesting enough for a show like this.

Yep, that's right: Anything you do to a BBC, SBC, RB Mopar of any type, SBM, Buick, Olds, Caddy, Pontiac, none of it matters. If you apply any of the upgrades applied to any American classic-era V8, the BBF wins all horsepower and reliability wars. It's been the elephant in the room since some hungover UAW workers started throwing 460s into Continentals instead of 462s. That was 1967. In 1967, the world has designed the most powerful engine architecture that would still fit in a car. You can get a Marine QC engine which Kaase also likes of course. THAT engine wins ALL engine competitions by architecture. The whole thing never started. Someday I will do a cast on this.

You're working on one of my favorite engines to build.....a well-built 460 engine never disappoints a customer. They can be killed by an idiot but, in general, if the guys keeps up with maintenance and watches the revs, these babies will move the load. The heads do not look like fuel-injected heads but must be with some porting. Balancing always makes the revs feel good and live longer.

@@ScottHBrown yes it does matter on ultra builds when your going above 800hp or so, I'd agree. Average builds below 800hp, it really doesn't matter. No sense in spending money you don't have to. It's like when dudes put big dollar AFR heads on a 302 just to make 400hp, when instead you can reach the same goal with a nice prep set of GT40's, 9.5, or 9.8 compression and a very mild cam.

Nice work guys. One comment , cool to see a 7875 on that thing but it's not nearly enough turbo for an engine that size. Maybe Viren can hook you up with an S480 or 488, something with the 96/88 exhaust wheel. All the comments about better heads is pretty hilarious, won't make a bit of difference with that turbo. But it would be a good experiment to show the merits of a properly sized turbo.

@SldgeHammr - EFI is more convenient to tune but it's also more expensive than a blow-through carb for the average guy running a turbo car on the street that isn't changing wastegate springs and tuning all the time. Dyno testing shows engines with EFI vs a properly sized carb are within 3-5hp of eachother so I don't think one is better than the other, just a matter of preference.

Interesting how these guys are always on a tight budget when building a Ford or Chrysler, but are fully budgeted for GM projects. In this case, they start with a "stock" 460 BBF that only dyno'ed 295 Hp... when any 1968-1972 Ford 460 with 4 Barrel Carb made 365hp @ 4400 rpm. with all the belts and pulleys.. Clearly their biggest limitation is their lack of commitment for building Fords!

Yep, there are a LOT of poor choices on this build! Not even really a money thing, just poor choices. Bad compression (boost friendly is not a modern practice, 8.4:1 is stupid these days), bad heads, hydraulic roller on this platform (screws up geometry) poor choices on efi for a dual plane intake... There's several hundred HP left on the table here.

I am surprised that you decided to go with a Dual Plane intake and that small of a cam. I would generally guess a guy who was running a turbo 472ci BBF would go with a Single Plane intake and a bigger cam. The loss of low rpm tq would be considered acceptable and prefered to nerf cylinder pressure during the TQ spike and then have it pull harder upstairs with the boost and the single plane would likely have better AF distribution cyl to cyl keeping it safer with boost. Any losses down low can always be made up with a little more boost and some E85 and will make even more peak hp.

seems like the oem parts be fine all day its not like a lot of turbo engine have forged pistons and its a 460 so 8 psi of boost ios very safe .they are over stating the need for new stuff now rods ill agree with and water injection if one needs to boost more

With those parts 15 psi is easy and you can put more timing in it

Needs more cow bell . . . and Pat's suspenders could use some more florescence under the black light. But, yes . . . when's the tour?

I always wondered what the Ram V10 would make with boost? Cool stuff 😎

That’s such an under appreciated engine. I’d love to see a performance build of it, particularly with boost

The biggest difference would come with getting rid of those very restrictive exhaust manifolds. Turbo's hate them.

Is that stock crank cast or forged? How much boost would y'all say to use for a 1997 F350 DRW tow rig with a 460 for max "safe" torque?

What is the purpose behind the Carb to EFI adapter having a long oval slot on one side and two holes on the other? Why not a divided or open adapter instead? Thanks in advance.

Were the spacers between the intake and those EFI heads custom made or did they come with the air gap intake?
