On selected ebikes in our range, we use the innovative MAHLE Smart Bike Systems (formerly ebikemotion) X35 drive system. In this video, we explain what it is, what the advantages of the system are, plus we show you how to operate the system and understand the discreet iWOC One controller that displays battery levels and controls the assistance too.
The system is fitted to our eSILEX, eSPEEDER and eSCULTURA bikes and it's designed to deliver a natural feeling assistance that also has a very low drag above the assistance speed limit, which is perfect for these lightweight, sporty-feeling bikes. Thanks to a fixed internal battery and a hub rather than a mid-mounted motor, the X35 drive system also allows a very sleek, non-ebike profile and a substantially lower weight than a traditional ebike.
Without a traditional display unit - MAHLE's smartphone app covers that - we also use the neat iWOC One controller to power up the bike, so we also explain how to use and understand what the different coloured LED lights mean for battery and assistance levels.
We also cover just who MAHLE are - possibly the biggest company you might never have heard of - and why we have such confidence in their engineering and are happy to fit the system to selected bikes.

I like the integration of the battery into the inner tube and the light weight of the system but I wonder if and how the battery can be exchanged. A lithium-ion ebike battery usually lasts 2 to 5 years. What happens after that period of time?

Hi there, it's possible to remove and repair or replace the battery with the MAHLE X35 system, though this is a procedure best carried out by a qualified mechanic. Hope that helps to answer your question.

I saw this motor mainly for road bike. What's the experience on MTB? My concern is there is no torque sensing. Does it feel like cadence sensing? i.e. the speed is set to preset speed based on PAS level. Or feel like more real bike experience like torque sensing? i.e. The power is proportional to the pedal efforts?

Will the performance related metrics of the software e.g. battery percentage, range etc integrate in with a wahoo elemnt bolt. I ride with the Wahoo on my bike as opposed to using my phone. Big fan of Merida bikes, and great video! How long does it take to get a full charge for the bike and battery extender?
@MERIDABIKES-INT
@MERIDABIKES-INT 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, we're pleased you enjoyed it! To fully charge the 208 Wh range extender will take around 3 hours and the main battery of the bike will be around 3.5 hours but these times are best used as a guide. MAHLE recommends that you do not leave the charger attached to the main battery for more 5 hours - you can find about the other ways to maximise your battery's lifespan here: www.ebikemotion.com/web/ebikemotion-battery-cares/

@MERIDABIKES-INT
@MERIDABIKES-INT 2 жыл бұрын
Hiya, while MAHLE might have that information on a test rig, in the real world, it would very much depend on the terrain and speed and also the map that has been used for the assistance levels so it's not possible to give that information out. All our MAHLE-equipped bikes use different assistance maps too - you can find a little bit more about that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pc18qb2Ctri2pmQ.html

@Mavczers

I know it's a little late but - the best way to check the mileage is to check how many volts fully charged battery has - for used one it's better to have more than 40V, 41V is brand new. And so on :)

I have been unable to discover the amount of power provided by the motor for each of the 3 assist levels? Does anyone know of the approximate wattage for each level?
@fehiii
@fehiii Жыл бұрын
According to Mahle support, unless you change the percentages in the phone app, Level 1 gives up to 100W (40% of max), Level 2 gives up to 175W (70% of max), and Level 3 gives up to 250W (100% of max)

Great video, very well explained, thank you. What happens to the assistance if the rider is putting out (through their legs) more than 250 watts, but travelling at under 25kph?
@ChrisThomas-hq2il
@ChrisThomas-hq2il 2 жыл бұрын
I have the e Scultura 400 and I am very happy with it. You have to pedal to get any assistance from the motor, and the level will depend on what setting you have selected (low/medium/high), but will cut out at 25kph. On the flat, if you set it on high, it wont need much effort on your part to get a decent speed but if you are peddling hard as well, then you will quickly get up to 25kph and it will then the motor wont help, but there isn't an abrupt cut off, more of a "fade". I tend to have it in "neutral" or low when I'm on the flat, but use medium or high for hills, depending on the severity. If you want the motor to do all the work, this isn't the bike for you. If you want help on hills or long rides, and a bike that still rides well without the motor, then this is a good choice
@mtbsieppo
@mtbsieppo Жыл бұрын
TL;DR answer: you will reach the top assisted speed really quickly. I have this system in my gt and really like it. Range is decent (50km easy, 250wh) if you put in some effort and and the motor has enough juice to do most of the work if that's your cake. And there's a tuning dongle available to raise the speed limit

Hi - I have just taken my ebike back to the shop with an Error36 code whilst using it on a hilly two day ride. I've been told I should be riding with the power ON all the time and then choose the assistance as and when needed. Is this true, was never told this when purchased and w friends have ebikes and also only turn ON when they want assistance. Surely this will drain some power. Thoughts ?
@MERIDABIKES-INT
@MERIDABIKES-INT 3 ай бұрын
Hi, we've not had any technical information from Mahle that the bike needs to be switched on while riding if assistance is not needed, but we have reached out to them to clarify. However, it may be more convenient to ride with the system switched on but the assistance switched off until needed - this will not consume any significant amount of battery and you will benefit from assistance starting immediately as and when you need it, rather than waiting for the system to power up. Regards, MERIDA

Hi there, it's very hard to give exact figures on the range in different settings with this system because it depends on rider input as well as rider weight and the terrain you'll be riding on. For the average user of your weight and on average terrain, 30 km would be no problem, even at the higher assistance settings. You may find this video useful: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ra6WmdSEp5zDqYE.html Regards, MERIDA

The ebikemotion phone application had been repalced by a new Mahle application that is mostly useless. It does not remember your bike and so cannot even provide the total distance traveled. When i go to work it refuses to starts before it gets the GPS signal fixed, instead it should start when we ask for it and start recording gps points when the gps signal get fixed. Typical experiment : click start, then click YES get the gps, then 3mn later it failed , click start again, click yes again and if you lucky the gps signal will be good enough for the ride to start. Same when you stop, you have to click many times, to confirm and save ... It may also have "broken" my orbea vibe, I got a an error 193 and Orbea had to update the bike firmware. It does not show the power delivered by the motor (the ebikemotion application did) . Often it won't connect or reconnect. I don't know if the "motor map"feature work, it may break again my bike so i won't use it. The application as an average of 1/5 in the google store, 1/5 is terribly low. The rest of the system is indeed good, ligh, fun but the application is just awful.

My wife now has three of these and has no issues with the MAHLE app, even using it to check the various conditions of a slightly used bike with X35 we bought for me. I'll probably just push the button and ride but she might talk me into setting the assist levels more like hers? She's been very happy with all 3 bikes though one required us to visit a dealer for a "software update" that took 10 minutes and cost next-to-nothing.

Technical errors: the motor power is 250 watt (max), not 250 watt-hour. The battery capacity is measured in watt-hour. And for the narrative error, Mahle is an established engineering company, but their engineering didn’t go into this system; they purchased this system straight up from the original Spanish inventor/company.
@MERIDABIKES-INT
@MERIDABIKES-INT 2 жыл бұрын
We think you're mistaken - we reference the fact that this bike has a 250 Watt-hour battery at 2:48 - we don't say that the motor is 250 W at any point, just the torque output of 40 Nm. You are correct that the motor has a nominal maximum output of 250 W, so we assume this is where your confusion has arisen. On your second point, MAHLE has developed the X35 system since the acquisition of ebikemotion in 2017, resulting in the reengineered X35+ system we fit to our bikes. Changes include increased connectivity and a stronger hub casing that allows for greater spoke tensions and improved reliability. Hope that clears things up.
