00:00 Used To, Get Used To or Be Used To... or Usually?
I am used to have a cup of tea every morning before I have my breakfast. Alright. Used to, get used to or be used to? Or usually? Let's finally learn which one to use so you can stop making this really common mistake in English. Thanks to EL, Cyril, and Elizabetta for suggesting the topic of today's class, one of whom specifically asked for the difference between I used to run when I was a child and I was used to running when I was a child.
00:43 When to use USED TO in English
So before I can answer the question, let's first have a look at when to use Used To in English. Now focus on the pronunciation of this: used to, use to. Used to is a past tense. In fact, it's one of the most common past tenses in English. After this video, if you want to learn more past tenses, then I recommend that video in which we look at the past simple and present perfect, like I ate or I have eaten. This past tense with used to is followed by the infinitive. I used to go, I used to eat. And to help me explain, when we use this tense, we're going to use Bill. This is Bill. He's in prison and we're going to describe his life now. Well, his wife divorced him. He never sees his family. He has no job. He always wears black and white clothes, and he's not happy. Now, three years ago was a very, very different time in Bill's life. He used to have a beautiful wife. He used to see his family every day. He used to work in a bank and he used to wear a suit to work every day. And let's be honest, he used to be happy. So can you see what we've done there? We've used Used To to describe habits and states that were true in the past, but they're not true now. He used to have a beautiful wife. This is describing a situation in the past, but it's not true now because his wife divorced him. He used to be happy. Again, I'm describing his state in the past. But it's not true now. Now he's sad. He used to work in a bank. This is a past habit that was true in the past. But it's not true now. And for situations like this, we use used to. Again, focus on the pronunciation of this. Used to, used to have, used to see, used to work, used to wear, used to be... Used to.
3:13 How to use GET USED TO in English
So when do we use get used to in English? Well, let me talk about my life. I used to live in England, but now I live in Spain. And the culture in Spain is very different to the culture in England. And I had to adapt. You have to adapt when you go to live in a different country. You see, when I lived in England, I used to have lunch at 12pm. But here in Spain, they have lunch at 2:00pm or 3:00pm. I used to speak English all the time, but here in Spain they speak Spanish. When I lived in England, I used to understand everybody perfectly. But here in Spain I understand maybe 90%, 95% of what people say to me, not everything. And when I wanted to go to the shops in England, I used to go at about 3pm or 4pm in the afternoon. But here in Spain the shops are closed at that time. I had to adapt and all these things had to slowly, little by little feel normal for me. And now they do. But let's talk about the process of these things feeling normal to me. Let's talk about the process of adapting. Well, I got used to eating at 3pm. I got used to speaking Spanish to everybody. I appreciate that, because these grammatical forms are pretty much the same as in portuguese (my language). So it's very easy to learn. Not that english is easy. I think most of english is very difficult. Since the words we usually use in Portuguese, in English are often different, this makes the meaning an enigma for us, and it takes you some time to process and understand.
