Actually... the first penguins in Animation came way before 1986 and there were way more than you think. The best example is "Пингвины" a Soviet cartoon made in 1968 about a tragic story in Antarctica where most of the characters are penguins.

from an animation standpoint, penguins lend a lot of unique movement. when they walk, they have a silly waddle. they can slide on their bellies, which can be used to make interesting fast paced sequences. they can swim as well. these can be exaggerated to make fun animated movies

They probably didn’t pick ostriches or emus because their feathers look more “feathery”, and because they’re a lot bigger and more complex in shape than penguins. Their legs are also far more elastic movement wise, so that would’ve been difficult to animate.

I thought you'd mention uncanny valley. Like people are less likely to recognize a CGI shark than a CGI dog and that's because we are more familiar with the movements and behaviors and looks of dogs. so like 2005 low quality animation makes penguins perfect because of their simple color and movement which you did mention but also because we don't often see them in real life so CGI versions of them might seem less uncanny to us then say...the baby sister in toystory

From a technical standpoint. Penguins are easier to rig and quicker to animate than other animals and humans. Also they are flock animals, which means: more penguins, less other creatures. That again means they'd just have to copy/paste one rig for all of them. And about 96% of the penguins in happy feet are probably just simulations/ AI's, so the animators basically only have to focus on animating the main characters. So, it'd cost less and be more efficient to make a penguin movie.

often different animation studios try to make similarly themed movies to compete with each other even over a few years, see antz vs a bugs life and other dreamworks vs disney titles but B rated studios also try to get on the "movies that make money" train, so one penguin movie did well at the box office so executives tasked artists to come up with another penguin film .. to make the moneys

I also think it’s important to take into account the thematic importance of animals that stmbooize conformity and sticking to the status quo. Not just in Happy Feet, but all penguin films attack at one point or another how a penguin breaks the stereotype of their species (i.e. Madagascar’s penguins refuse to be cuddly). Especially considering that early 21st century films targeted at kids are obsessed with “finding your true self” and defying societal expectations, I think there is also some thematic relevance behind in penguins being known as identical. Just some food for thought.

As an animation student I can confirm your theory about Antarctica being easier to animate with the flat expanse of ice. Granted water is very hard to animate and render and that features pretty prominently in most of these movies. So I guess it balances out?

Actually, ice and snow is very difficult to animate. Partially because ice is transparent and react to light in a very peculiar way, and snow can easily be moved by wind and react differently to being moved by objects/animals depending on how wet it is among other things. Ice and snow also scatters light, which can make it very difficult to animate as well. I think ice and snow is even comparable to water in difficulty.

Now that I think about it, my school actually had a legit penguin carnival one night in our gym in second grade, which I guess would have been around 2006-7 and I never really questioned why before

The reason why there is so many animated penguin movies is because people want to add character to simple animals and also penguins are already comical in movement and those movements work great for animation especially for their slippery look
