The basic router settings for gaming, and settings that improve connection in online games explained! These are my thoughts and opinions on settings that are supposed to "improve" online gaming. For example: lower ping, decrease lag, and better server connection.

I noticed I was having connection issues in blackout. I recalled I did some router changes from one of your videos to optimize WAW. I reset my net gear router to default and now have been getting a good connection. My question is, if you optimize for say BO4, do you have to change router setting each year for the new COD? @@JohnGlasscock honestly I forget. I beleive it was based of the optimization video Infinite warfare or WW2. I reset the router and it appears to be working but I will try the QOS and leave everything stock. Thanks again.

I need help. Both me and my friends we are on nat type 2. But can't join each other room. I had all my setting right fir gaming. Upnp enable, add ip address, and connect directly.

Lowering MTU depends on the type of network connection . Ipv6 LTE and VPN all use different headers for tagging traffic . LTE for example used an MTU of 1482 -86.

I've tried google, open, and cloudfare dns to see if changed download speeds, which is did. My isp dns was around 43ms and the other 3 are at 21so it was ideally "faster" but then I saw 4.2.2.1 and I tried it. It boosted my upload speeds and I had a 21 ping to it. But my question is this, semi unrelated, when you do buffer bloat testing, do you let dslreports select your servers or do you choose them? I've used googles in the past but it's not even the closest serve to me and could add slight jitter or BB because of distance. I'm closest to Texas so ideally I'd want to use them instead but I just wanted your opinion.

That XR700 which I have is a monster. With aggregation ports. Your switch will benefit. However not a big deal unless you have LAN parties. Its overkill since we're nowhere near speeds that high. Since even fiber speeds are still limited per city. QoS is a big factor in all this. DUMA OS which has just hit the market with the XR500 or XR700 Netgear routers help even further lowering ping for gaming. And bufferbloat is the most important thing to have consistency preventing jitter/ping spikes. Which benefit for smoother gameplay as well

Ok, question, I have the netgear r6900v2, newest firmware and all that. I've enabled my ps4 to have highest priority and renamed the device as PS4 in qos settings, but when I go back to the basic tab and click attached devices is never shows the ps4 with the new name, it's still listed as unknown. Am I doing something wrong here or is that just how it is?

Hello John. I can't find routers with SQM, only with QoS. Is that still enough to get an A+ Bufferbloat rating instead of my current B, and basically prioritize cloud gaming servers (virtual private servers / cloud computers) ?

Mentions open DNS at 4:17. I've always been under the impression that open recursive DNS servers are dangerous since most ISPs don't mitigate against spoofed packets

Question about changing MTU size. You said to change it on the device you're playing with but what if i'm playing on my PC and i get disconnected frequently from Cod: Warzone. What should I lower it to? Thanks in advance.. Also, my QOS does not have an advanced option, only a button to enable it. I updated to the most recent version just in case that was the issue. I have the R7000P, Maybe that's why.

If I have an open nat on modern warfare is it still good to port forward? And if I were to port forward and add the ports for modern warfare do I add the ports for playstation network as well and would I add these ports in one entry or multiple entry’s?

THUMBS UP! WILL TRY THESE + SOME OF UR OTHER VIDS SOON. ?'S THO: Im using atnt fiber, bgw210 atnt modem/router, s8000 & r7000 router. (most of these i picked due to ur advice on other vids) - so dmz on the r7000 is a NO. but on the other hand dmz on the atnt modem/router SHOULD be done in order to establish bridge to the r7000? (& ofc changing the ips to prevent ip conflicts) - will this setup work with bgw210 or only using the pace? thanks again for ur vids

Nearly every source you find will tell you not to use QoS, even for gaming. There are pros and cons for it, and sometimes it just comes down to your own specific setup, so I would recommend testing with and without QoS to find out which performs best for yourselves.

I have an att u verse modem that has a built in router. If I got a night hawk would I have to put it to bridge mode or something? I don’t know a whole lot about this, so more detail the better :)

Hi When I go to change device priority in QoS settings it doesn't update and they all my devices are still on medium priority after I changed them all to low apart from my PS4 which I set to high. Why does it keep reverting back to medium for all my devices? Do you have to apply each priority separately?

Just found this video as Ive been struggling to keep a strong wifi connection on my ps4. Even though I should have my PS5 on release day and Im sure the upgraded tech will make a difference, I still decided to tinker with these settings to see if it will help in the meantime. I want to play it safe so I am only messing with QOS to prioritze my ps4, port forward and disable UPnP. Ill come back and edit if there is a difference. EDIT: I didnt want to port forward for every online game I play, so I ended up just enabling QoS for my PS4 and disabled 20/40mhz coexistence as I heard that disabling the latter could help. I also got an extender that Im going to ethernet my ps4 into. We will see how it goes!

Do you know why a decent amount of options in my router login area are grayed out? Such as QoS, Parental Controls, and Netgear Armor. And in Setup, Internet, Lan and, Wan are grayed out.

not sure how old this is but i use a ATT modem/router and have my own Asus GT-AX11000 and trying to use a VPN and got my xbox on open on ipv4 and ipv6 but when i use the VPN it goes moderate then double NAT on the xbox. please help

hey, I had a question regarding QOS on R700. When I put dynamic it allows me to control down and up speeds. I have 500 down and 20 up from my isp, but when I input 80% of that and run a dsl test the bufferbloat is bad. I have to reduce the speed to 300 for it to be good. Also You said to use dynamic QOS its better. SInce I have 20 upload and the only option is "uplink" it sets it to around 12-15 mbps and that also locks my download speed to that. it takes forever to download things.

No, I'm not a fan of any auto configured QoS. Anything that allows you to control the total bandwidth and its allocation will be better

John just curious I have 1GB fiber internet, all the correct hardware to include a fully bridged NETGEARXR500. That being said I can’t get a ping lower than 30 when playing Fifa19 and experience up to 1sec delay. Is it true that my distance from a server may be a factor I can’t overcome?

I set up qos for this router for my pc being the highest priority for both the pc wifi and ethernet port. How ever when i ran speed test using dslreport web tool, the wifi was able to get 130Mbs download and 15Mbs upload. The ethernet only get 15Mbs download and 15Mbs upload. When i disable the qos the ethernet speed is 140Mbs/15Mbs, but my bufferbloat score is terrible. Can you show me how to fix this?

I lowered my mtu down because of packet loss using a dual band router as an access point through a dual antenna two way extender that is connecting my router to a main router over 1000 ft away. Getting 50 Mbs Down, 18 Up, with a 10 to 15 ms ping. 5g wifi using Ipv6 through Starlink ISP. Best Dns server I have found, is the new; Control D (unfiltered) or Control D + Ads & Tracking. Only real issue is a frame rate red line, once and a while, which usually clears up in a couple seconds. Seems to only be an issue, in the early morning hours 3 to 5, when Riot pushes Eastcoast users onto Westcoast servers. Thanks for your explanations of network topics, you keep the dialog simple and easy to understand.

I have an r6400 and when I set my gateway to bridge mode the router says there is no internet connection. However I can access internet on my phone and my xbox just fine. But when I do the speed test it says that the internet was not detected that being said if I turn bridge mode off it then says the internet connected. And I can speed test. #2 I have don't everything this video has informed and nothing is working to improve my connection. Can anyone elaborate?

I had my ipv6 on dhcp then I watched this video then I switched ipv6 to auto configuration my internet turned off I had to unplug my router and back in, my speed are way slower than it was my speed was always around 300mpbs now it's 170mpbs after this? What did I do I went back and put the settings back to dhcp even disable and back on now my internet speeds are way slower????

Any suggestions I have my Comcast modem with 600 mbps have a direct ethernet cable going to my son's Room 100' 7 cat I upgraded so the problem is he went from getting 300 to only getting 50 mbps. Somebody please help and how can IMake changes to get Em up to speed.

I game in a room two rooms away from my XR500 and purchased a 100ft CAT7 cable to reach. With this cord I have an excess of about 50ft in cabling. Do you think getting a more reasonable length with less excess would help my ping latency. Usually getting around 30-50ms

Like I’m not able to connect with friends and if I do we take long to find games assuming because of me. By the way, I’m not from the states. I stay in Guam, so relatively I always find games with 150-200 ping, which is the usually for where I stay at. Any tips settings recommended for me?

Hey glasscock I did everything you said in the video, now I’m having this weird problem where I set my PS4 to the highest priority and everything else on low and when I test internet speed on the PS4 it won’t go above (7mbs/2) I have a 200mbs internet connection. However the devices that are on low priority are acheiveing 200+ which is weird. PS4 is wired and I have the exact same router as yours (r7000)

Your ping does not reflect your uplink and downlink speed. It reflects the actual time it physically takes for the handshake between your end and the server to complete. A dying router, a damaged or extremely long ethernet cable can cause it even if your speeds are high. Like if you were bridging through a second router that has to jump to the main router, then to your satellite or whatever you use, you will see an increased ping because the connection has to travel through more things before completing a handshake. Not the best explanation but yeah. Ping is the actual physical speed of your connection, not the data transfer rate.

I don’t know if you will see this but I’m at my wits end, I got a new router checked all the settings and can’t figure it out, I can talk in party chat just fine but not game chat at all, I can’t hear anything from others and it shows my mic is muted... it’s for multiple games. What could it be (ps4) I have tried everything...

Playstation recommends establishing these ports for the PS4 for a start: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 UDP: 3478, 3479 There are other ports which you can also open such as: TCP: 1935 UDP: 3074 Maybe those will help?

I didn't buy that exact router but I do have the Netgear nighthawk ax3000. I also live in a 1300 square foot house so I should have no problem with gaming but I did want to tell you one console and living room is wired the other one in the bedroom is wireless I think running them both the same time should be fine correct

Great video! Will any of the methods above fix my internet latency issue due to internet jitter que or Internet jitter. I am using a service/app that allows musicians to jam together over the internet but my internet latency makes it impossible to keep time. Thank you

my internet is 390 down and 18up. i set qos 360 down and 25up, this seems to give me the lowest bufferbloat on DSL Reports website. if i limit my upload then i get much worse bufferbloat on my uploads

I have the nighthawk x4s with cable internet 400 down 25 up. Changes MTU to 1480 (I only game on Xbox one x). After doing this I fixed an issue where I was getting some packet loss on the upload end.

Possibly go back to older firmware if you want advanced QoS
