i think the reason the mom texted the daughter asker her to not be in the bathroom for so long was because the ABC company can’t put cameras in the bathroom and for some reason she wants her daughter to be visible to the company. maybe the reason Madison was just sitting in the bathroom is because she doesn’t want to be filmed, and that could also be the reason that she avoids going home (leaving her mom in the parking lot to hang with her friends)

@meadowlin2656

Several words: obsession leading to neglect. A recurring theme is obsession, paranoia, and child neglect. I think the people and things being face down and stuck is an allegory for being "too far gone" into a delusion or trend, and that madison falling through the floor is symbolic of a descent into madness, possibly death. The pink thing is probably personification of the combination of paranoia and child neglect plaguing the family. This personally reminds me of an extreme religious household or something, one that practices home remedies over actual medical treatment and as a result, the children of the family suffer, believing that they are riddled with something terrible, and the parents punishing or neglecting them because of that, beit sin/"sinful behavior", or lynks. I don't think that's what this is and allegory for, its just reminiscent of it. There is a potential that lynks isnt even important at all and is a red herring, the real issue being the abuse and neglect of the children due to the parent's insanity and obsession, which is overlooked due to everything else going on

I know I'm six years late but I want to share my interpretation. I think this entire art piece is a statement on anxiety. Madeline is literally sinking through the floor. She's sinking down into anxiety about Lynkes disease, which is ironically manifesting her symptoms. This is common with those with anxiety, they often fear situations so intensely that they end up creating and manufacturing memories and events which didn't happen. Anxiety is all about perception, which explains the common theme there. Everyone in the family is a hypochondriac for Lynkes , and this ends up manifesting in their day to day lives, which destroys the family (as we see in the short film.) I don't think we're meant to take everything literally, I think it is a figurative exploration of anxiety and compulsion, and how it can interfere with people's lives. In reality, the true disease is not Lynkes, it's the fear of Lynkes.

i think the pink creature is a manifestation of loneliness, being forgotten, feeling unimportant due to its connection with the children, being pink and the baby goes pink (also the hat is pink) in the camera, using the sons bedsheets and maddison most likely killing herself. also it comes from a place that looks forgotten about, filled with so much mess it’s unable to be seen until it makes itself seen, kind of like how maddison is finally ‘seen’ by her parents after she starts phasing through the floor. also maddison just wanted to feel normal with her friends, hanging out at the mall, and her mum got mad at her for it and i also think both the parents are extremely paranoid people and end up harming those around them due to it. also the pink creature appears to be a female due to anatomy, maybe it’s the woman from the window that’s just deteriorated into pure negative feelings from mostly maddison due to the woman looking like her.

I realized something while watching this again: the way Tom and Ann barely notice things happening right in front of them, forget about watering the Christmas tree for a week, and seem to lose all their common sense at completely random times? That reminds me an awful lot of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. And towards the end of the video, the house begins to fill with smoke. Just something to chew on.

My take on the short by itself is it has the theme of domestic issues not being taken seriously until it's too late to do much about them. And even when they do realize something is wrong, there is no idea how to fix it, just a bunch of panic as they try to do everything they can think of until they start having emotional breakdowns. Meanwhile as their focus is on fixing one problem, more problems just start happening. Just my take on it, there's a sad hopelessness to it.

The repairman finally solved it for me: this is just The Sims, in live action, with characters acting and reacting like real people, but with all of the underlying absurdity of a video game, namely one plagued by glitches. The various recordings are just files / save states. In a game like The Sims, the repairman suddenly “showing his body” to two clients isn’t weird, a person getting in a fight, right outside your characters view, but being ignored, because a window is “in the way,” is normal, the repairman telling your characters, what he’s done, while they’re in bed, asleep, in the middle of the night, perfectly normal Sims behavior. (Tom’s Relaxing to random sounds of movie violence, also normal Sims behavior.) Throw in a few glitches, boom. Even the name is just a parody. What a magnificent troll! Bravo!

I know I'm HORRIBLY late, but aside from the overlying "Lynx Disease" sub plot, I think this video shows something A LOT more depressing. The daughter. The subject prone IN the kitchen floor. She'd been lying on the floor for 2 hours, but no one takes any notice. When they do finally notice, they try to blame this on her, first thinking she's crazy, then thinking she's lying and then thinking that she's on drugs. But they never blame themselves. So, we get the horror that ensues: The neglect of everyone in the house, including two younger children. The smoke alarm, screaming above in the kitchen and smoke filling the house. A daughter, trying to reach out to her parents who push her away and blame her for their problems. Parents who clearly can't raise a household pushing weird ideals and horrible teachings onto their children. Elaborating on this point, we can see the forced diet of clay and questionable TV shows "Boomy the Cat" and "Sculptors Clay Ground" that the children have learnt to live with. A more weird thing to take into account around the end are the seemingly meaningless scenes. The ones with a boy's birthdays involved. If you listen closely (or use the CC like me ;D), you can hear the phrase "but no present for the birthday boy" in one of the scenes. Combine this with the children all lying face down can show us another overlying theme of neglect; a child meant to be given attention and love not given any that ends with a situation no one can point the blame at. This video isn't just about insane parents. It's about child neglect, and how that can effect those around. Like with the repairman, trying to cut the daughter out of the hole, desperately trying to fix something already broken, before being pulled away by the abuser to try some other insane idea they have.

There's a thing about good horror getting at something taboo or uncomfortable and I'd completely agree that this achieves exactly that. He subverts our expectations of a household ('people' not 'a family'); then, to me, it is about dysfunction in the family unit and, as you say, the idea of not hate exactly, but the lack of love in the family and neglect on the part of the parents. I think when the film is explored from that angle, you get towards this abrasive, shocking final act where we Resnick basically says that familial lovelessness is an epidemic - we see everyone suffering in some form, but the grandmother, who (I think crucially seems more interested in the strange, somewhat inexplicable modelling lore) has apparently finished her parental duties, spends much of the film completely oblivious. Between this and Unedited Footage (where we are also in a very consciously domestic setting), I think Resnick is really talented at presenting family psychodrama in horror tropes.
@bojanglesfries
@bojanglesfries 4 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the young boy, Jackson. He has basically no lines and is ignored by his parents. His bed has no sheets and his room is basically just his grandmother's room. Unlike Madison there isn't anything wrong with him (except precocious depression most likely), but his family still treats him like metaphorical chopped liver. Same for the child who is allowed to run outside unattended. The name also plays some prevalence, as those in the house are so dysfunctional they are just a gaggle of people, not necessarily a full family.

You just turned on a lightbulb in my head. Perhaps this series is also about depression? A lot of the things the parents tell Madison are things many people are told when they try to open up about their depression (Ie. "You're crazy, you're on drugs, you're just looking for attention, etc.") And it would make sense with how Madison is sinking through the floor since, for some, depression makes you want to lay down and do nothing until you die. Her sinking into the floor could also be interpreted as Madison "Rotting away" until she "dies" (when she hits the mattress.) It also makes sense since recorded cases of depression have been rising, especially in our youth. Grandma's oblivious to it all because her generation didn't deal with that stuff at all. The parents, to me, represent current adults who are in denial of their problems and try to bottle it all up. Like how the dad was singing "It's Your Flag" and how the mom is frequently brought to tears "Because a character died." I've often said the same thing to dodge people asking me why I've been crying. Finally, you've got the kids who are hit the hardest simply because they're kids who still don't know how to handle their emotions. In this case, they are being emotionally neglected by their parents who would see their kids having problems as a failure on their part. After Madison falls through the floor, everyone outside the house is laying down like she was. If we do interpret Madison falling as her dying or possibly committing suicide, then everyone outside could represent how, after someone, especially a teen, kills themself, the community as a whole is struck by depression. Almost spreading like an epidemic. In this theory, things like The Sculptor's Clayground and Lynx Disease represent how society overall treats depression. It's a bad thing that you shouldn't have but no one can say for certain why people get it or how to 'fix' someone who has it. Like the webpage says, "You DON'T want to get it. You DO want to get rid of it!" The Sculptor's Clayground fits very well since taking up a new hobby, or using art to vent, is a common way people cope with depression. Admittedly, I'm a bit tired so my sleepy brain could be seeing things that aren't there or THHPII is so open to interpretation that you could come up with any theory and it'll work.

Going off of the child neglect theory (which I find very valid) the pink monster could be the personification of neglect. hence why it torments the parents in particular showing them their failures through not providing bed sheets to their son. It also resides in the junk room where items are neglected.

And it makes sense that this "neglect person" wears the neglected child's bedsheets. It's something that the parents forgot/didn't care about to give their child. But the personification of neglect doesn't forget and it cares unlike the parents. Because it knows how much the kids suffer from it. And it knows how much something like not even owing a set of bedsheets means to the kid. So it wears it as some sort of symbolism maybe? And if we wanna go a little further it can kinda look like a cape. Like how maybe this personification of neglect is trying to act as a hero for these kids. Or maybe it's a character Jackson made himself, a hero that he wants to save them (His imaginary friend that the dad himself is something good for kids?). Based on the logs we know he's made his original characters before. One that was all pink as Madison described. One of the more interesting conclusions. Personally, I like the concept of it being the personification of paranoia a bit more. But then again, the many different perceptions is a part of the experience.

My personal theory is all a sonic fan story, and the pink...thing is an Eggman stand in, the disease is a virus released by Eggman, Maddison clipping through the floor is a sonic 06 reference. Eating garbage and clay is a reference to chilly dogs, sonic/boomy is obsessed with them. All of it is written by Thomas because of his sonic obsession. His wife is something he will never have because he lives in the grandma's basement.

Perception, in particular flawed perception, is definitely a central theme. But in addition to being an extended metaphor for that and possibly other related ideas, I think that THHPII could also be said to have symbolic clues about the relative pasts of these family members before they came together, which aren't spelled out for us. And I lean more toward Nightmare Masterclass's theory about the pink person--that it's a manifestation of Jackson's dead mother, Tom's first wife. That could offer another reason why she (the pink figure is revealed to have boobs at one point, so apparently it is indeed a girl) spends so much time in their bedroom. And in that image that this video focused on for so long toward the end of her approaching the married couple, her arms are outstretched, the bedsheet is covering her back, and she seems to be showing her naked body to the couple--perhaps a reference to Tom's sexual baggage with his first wife and how it affects his relationship with Anne, and possibly the threat she feels from the idea that he had a wife before her who is dead now and the question of whether she can measure up. Speaking of the bedsheet--this theory provides a possible explanation for why she wears that, too. If the bedsheet that Jackson is denied on his own bed represents the nurturing that he and Madison don't get from Tom and Anne, then perhaps his dead mother is safe-keeping it for him, if she did provide that nurturing for him while she was alive. She could also be metaphorically acting as her son's hero, as Tom tries to when he dresses up as Boomy the cat. Some of those were my own original thoughts and I think others were from Nightmare Masterclass (it sounds vaguely familiar that he said something about the pink figure acting as Jackson's hero).

I don't think Madison was ever in the floor. The cut of her "watching herself" phasing through it indicates (imo) that it was mass hysteria. The build-up of worry about Lynks became so potent that the whole house collectively believed they were finally seeing one of the more outlandish symptoms first hand. I also considered the possibility that they're not really a family. They all seem unwell in some way. The son hoards trinkets and seems very quiet and withdrawn. The dad wears his son's clothes and dresses up as Boomey. The mother is a hypochondriac and is pathologically wary of Lynks (perhaps her obsession "infected" the rest of the household?). The grandma lets an infant wander off on its own with a pat, and somehow believes Clayground guy's sculptures are truly art, and seems to watch him with sincerity. Madison, going by how her parents treat what they deemed her "episode" on the kitchen floor before she began to slip through it, is prone to bouts of depressive behaviours. Perhaps the house is located in an experimental neighbourhood or facility where the mentally unwell are kept? Ownership fell into the wrong hands, and instead of pursuing the initially benevolent goals of the facility (to explore the potentially therapeutic effects of creating "families" comprised of the mentally unwell - orphans, adults unable to work/function, misunderstood old folks) it became a social experiment to see how susceptible such individuals are to manipulation. The recording titles that state outlandish things such as the boy's head caving in could just indicate the collective belief of the household. The fact that they all seem to accept the newsletter as fact is telling of this possibility, too. How disconnected from reality must one be to read its articles and not recognise their strangeness? The kids being prone in the garden could indicate that the experiment was an overwhelming success - contact with the unwell "family" members can allow for the young and healthy to be "infected" with the lowered manipulation threshold being explored within the house. That's a possible take.

Forming arbitrary associations that ultimately lead to a conclusion that creates a self-induced paranoia. Basically, feeling a little unwell, reading a Web MD article, and concluding that you now have a terrible disease. +Fyrsiel Maybe you guys are onto something. Just as "unedited" had a very simple idea or theme once you put together all the bizarre seemingly random pieces (antidepresants causing murder suicide) this one could be hypochondria and self obsession causing damaging introversion. I left the room for a bit and did some other stuff and the idea came to me, I was so bugged by how little sense the "falling through the floor" thing made. Then it just fucking hit me. I asked myself what we knew about that girl, since knowing SOMETHING would be a clue. We knew nothing. Why? Nobody seemed to talk about her, nobody seemed to have conversations with her. She could have been dead and the first instinct for several hours was that she was just faking for attention. She was phasing through the world because she was gradually ceasing to become a part of it. The boy was still the subject of attention, but it is clear he would be in the same situation eventually as the baby takes center focus and his neglect goes to an even greater extreme. It explains so much, like the otherwise weird "when she falls through, everyone tell her we love her" bit. His revelation was that they were losing her, so the last ditch effort was to make her feel validated as soon as the opportunity came. We see two possibilities (she falls through the mattress and then the world itself) or she lands on the mattress and everyone tells her they love her and she is in their field of perception again. Good or bad ending? No, both are bad endings. Clearly this is a metaphor for suicide, the family thinks she is "faking it for attention" until they are clearly losing her for real. How does the family react? They take the mattress (which already has no bedsheets) from their slightly less neglected child, in order to save the daughter. So if this is metaphor, it could be presented in this way, the family sees that her suicidal behavior is not an act and they finally focus on her and give her the love and attention she needs, but in the process take love and attention away from the boy. We already see him acting completely depressed and uncaring of everything. He will be the next to phase through the floor. Why the people at the party too? No fucking clue, makes about as much sense as the pink freaking monster. Maybe it's not suicide but "phasing out" of their lives. The daughter was "drifting away" but the entire affair or just the seeming rudeness and lack of interest in the guests causes them to start fading away from the family as well. Yeah, that one has a lot of holes in it too. Still trying to make sense of this. I can't help but mention this mind splinter that's bugging me. The boomcat thing. Obviously sonic, right? Ok maybe the actor playing the "thing" is the dad, but what if that is just because they had to reuse actors? Yes the dad's interest in the cat could be seen as a clue to this secret, and I find it the most likely, but it does seem worth noting that we know of another "alan" character who likes the color blue, who we have seen eat garbage, who we know could potentially be violent (the mother's concern of the cartoon being "violent" seems a little out of nowhere given the clues we have about the cartoon but could be a clue of the characters identity) and who is childlike enough to have an obsession with such a cartoon character. Yeah, you probably see where I am going with that one. I couldn't help having that thought as soon as I saw the costume, and this character roaming from house to house eating up all the garbage. But yes, the dad does make far more sense, but there is another thing that bothers me. First the kid has the interest in boom, then the dad has a slight interest (I remember parts of the song) which clearly grows, and then we see the wife start to build an interest even though she dislikes the character at first. The point? Maybe another example of this idea becoming flesh. Maybe that's what the perception theme is, our beliefs and thoughts influencing perception and our perceptions influencing reality. This explains everything, EXCEPT THAT CREEPY PINK FUCKING THING! But it explains boomy "becoming real" it explains the symptoms from this nutty disease crafted by this nutty guy becoming real, and then the disease itself becoming lethal for the people outside the home. It explains the researchers treating the disease as real and noting diagnosis even when doctors do not. BTW, why do the doctors treat it as a real disease at all? Are they in on it, or could the disease be real in this universe? But maybe the researchers are studying the effects of perception, of belief. Maybe that's the importance of the clay pizza. It's not that they are in some clay eating fad to cure the disease, they believe they are eating pizza......except that doesn't explain the spitting. Nothing really explains the spitting. Yeah ok, sleep time.

I like Night Mind's idea that the pink guy represents fear/paranoia infiltrating the home. And it apparently stole the brother's bedsheet...! I think the idea that beliefs eventually become, or possibly warp, reality is a good one. Our paranoia and fear can distort our perception of reality. And in this bizarre universe in this series, this could be very literal, and that might be the idea. Their fears literally become real as they grow and gain more emphasis. I'm not so sure that Boomy is Alan instead of the father. I think the father's obsession with the cartoon is representative of something. Either the guy is just strange in what he starts to obsess over, or maybe it's that sort of situation where the father figure in the family ends up being more childlike and not too great at maintaining responsibility as a father figure should. Or maybe the stress of trying to maintain a household is getting to him and he's cracking. Maybe he misses his childhood. But I do think the whole Boomy thing is the father. Just not 100% sure what it means. Finally, the girl falling through the floor. I think it is an excellent metaphor for suicide. At the very least Depression. As for all of the people outside who are also on the floor? Perhaps that is to say that everyone has their battles to fight with. And it wears us all down.
