There's no better way to kickstart Cabin Fever Dreams than with this recently revived monstrosity. Lasagna Cat is an entertainment acid trip you didn't know you wanted... and didn't know would hurt so much.

This discussion reminds me of Garfield Minus Garfield, where they take Garfield out of the strips and you're left with the depressed, bipolar, horribly lonely Jon. Just another weird way of looking at the comic strip.

I agree. Even when I was a little, innocent, and naive kid, I never liked Garfield, because it gave me an uncomfortable, anxious feeling. Later, when I was older, I recognized those unpleasent emotions as being sympathetic depression for Jim's worthless, low self-esteem, self hate fueled life.

Am I the only one who had a thought draw out when the poorly-aged taxidermy cat was drawn out? All I could hear in my head (with perspective of Arbuckle/Davis) was: "This is it. This is your legacy to the world. This is all you could bring. This is all you could construct. This is the entirety of your human life concentrated into one, singular form. You didn't save anyone. You didn't heal anyone. You didn't help anyone. You didn't create marvels, explore the corners of the earth, nor bring enemies together. Your legacy is this cat. Are you happy? Do you hear that? It's rotted stitches are popping."

Eventually Jim Davis will find that video. Someone close to him, a coworker, a friend or a family member will find it, secretly make a big thing out of it, 'Whatever you do never tell Jim!' Which will spread it like fire. Then one day, someone close to him, at work or at Christmas or any other big family event will vaguely, perhaps jokingly refer to it just loud and pointedly enough for Jim to notice, and there will be shocked silence, alerting Jim that something is awry, it'll pique his interest, he will either learn of it directly or of some cursory information and one day, quietly, perhaps thinking he's doing it just for a laugh, to be 'in' on the joke, so that maybe he can confidently and humorously acknowledge it the next time it comes up, shocking the person who mentioned it, turning the tables. Whatever it is, he'll find some rationale to search for it, that's a sure thing. If you thought there was a big secret joke at your expense, would you just ignore it? No, you wouldn't. As soon as someone tells you there is something you don't want to know, it's all you want to know. As soon as you realise there is a secret about you that nobody will mention to your face, it's all you will want to know about. Jim will find this. It's a certainty.

Hey, here's something fun. Jon used to have a roomate/friend named Lyman(the original owner of Odie) which was made to talk with Jon, since Garfield can only "speak" throught thought bubbles. He grew pretty quick in popularity, close to Garfield. But... Since it's called "Garfield", Lyman appeared less and less in the comics, until disappearing completly (apart from a cameo in a flash game and a recent episode of Garfield) to put more spotlights on Garfield. Odie still lives with Jon. Jim willingly decided to remove an interesting character to focus on... a selfish cat obsessed with lasagna that keeps abusing Jon and Odie... Nice job, Jim... Atleast, Liz is still alive... and now lives with Jon.

Honestly the "Mr. Funny Man" loop is terrifying to me. Something about it is just, VISCERALLY uncomfortable. Maybe it's his super fake legs behind his head, or the way it seems a little sped up so it makes the movements a little... wrong? Jankey? I was a huge fan of Garfield as a kid. I even practiced drawing him and created my own cat character inspired by him. I would go onto the website and read through the entire archive of comic strips from the beginning. The fact that Jon was a cartoonist amazed me because that's what I still aspire to be to this day. A cartoonist in a cartoon strip blew my kid mind with how meta it was. And I always felt sympathy for Odie.They'll have a special place in my heart as a memory even though I don't find the comics funny anymore.

Perhaps you just didn't want to include it, but, much like an Alan Resnick project, there is a HUGE amount of supplemental material you didn't mention. All of the URLs that appear in any of the videos work, which lead to things like a fake malware site and a creepy porn gallery based on Jon's shampoo bukkake. But the real prize is two extra KZfaq channels Fatal Farm created with dozens of extra videos: lazycat619 and darthmauldog1125, the usernames of Garfield and Odie when they were watching their awful action movie attempt. The other two channels are pretty much the polar opposite of Lasagna Cat: parodies of the low effort, no talent videos you'll find when you stumble on those channels that never get more than 100 views on a single upload. Garfield makes a video unboxing a cat toy and attempts a bad Let's Play, and Odie runs embarrassing "special effects tests" and showcases himself falling off a skateboard repeatedly...then begging for a sponsorship. They also let slip that most of act 2 of Lasagna Cat was actually made years ago, such as the unboxing video showing a receipt with a date from 2012. (It was actually an open secret in Hollywood that Fatal Farm never stopped making Lasagna Cat and was just sitting on dozens of videos. I don't think anybody actually expected a giant release like this.) The sex survey results video is definitely the centerpiece of the new content, but there's so much more Lasagna Cat than what they put on the channel and everyone should take a look.

As soon as someone tells you there is something you don't want to know, it's all you want to know. As soon as you realise there is a secret about you that nobody will mention to your face, it's all you will want to know about. Jim will find this. It's a certainty.

Okay, I just watched the last few minutes. Here’s my take. “Lasagna Cat”’s main thesis is “Garfield is not funny”. Everything about the last few minutes of sex survey is not funny. But it’s also really, REALLY cringey forced experimental film imagery in the most eye rolling way conceivable. And I think the creators meant it that way. This is no high artistic statement. It’s a mockery of those who would shit on Garfield for not being “high art” as opposed to the simple act of failing to be a funny cartoon strip. Otherwise, the creators would compare the comic to something other than what an eye rolling aesthete would compare a Garfield comic strip to: an abortion.
@dono5529
@dono5529 2 жыл бұрын
I am literally years late but you’re kind of right. In an interview with the creators they talked about the ending to sex survey and it doesn’t really have any meaning, it’s just as over the top and artsy as possible because they just felt like making some weird shit and seeing how people pick it apart.
@memememe609
@memememe609 Жыл бұрын
I feel as if Lasagna Cat is ultimately critical of both sides. It repeatedly insults Jim Davis for having a massive ego despite just getting lucky with a generic cartoon strip with no real talent (Hence why in the RPG parody he has no skills), but it also is insulting fans who expect Garfield to become some pretentious "high" form of art. The final episode is basically just stating how Garfield strips reuse the same jokes over and over, but does it in a way where the gore and unusuality makes the message incoherent. Hence it's basically mocking all the people who make "Kaiju Garfield" or "Garfield Minus Garfield" trying to find something deeper. Ultimately, as a comic strip, Garfield should just be actually funny and memorable. No need to be "artsy", just have some skills and effort put into proper comedy that doesn't do "I hate mondays" or "I'm fat" or "Jon is a loser" again, and again, and again.

I want to expand on your theory a bit. I saw this interpretation as more about the ‘shadow’ and ‘ego’ in psychology, as well as the ‘true self’ and the ‘false self’. The short version is that the shadow is the aspect of ourselves that contains things were ashamed of, have been told are bad, or that we reject, but are nonetheless still a part of us. The ego is a mask that we wear to convince others we aren’t those things. However, when we identify with only these positive qualities, and disassociate with our negative qualities, a ‘false self’ is created, and the ‘true self’ is suppressed. The true self never goes away, but the ego can “die” in a sense, in that it’s only an illusion. The ego is fragile because its a lie, a false front masking our deeper insecurities. So it does anything to survive. The true self is constantly trying to push itself to the surface from the subconscious, but the ego, the self we choose to identify with, fears others seeing us as we truly are, failures and all. So we abuse it; we call ourselves names, put ourselves down, or even harm ourselves to shut it up. As a result, we suffer. The only way to fix this is to overcome our darkness by facing it, and embracing it and accepting the truth of what we are. We can work to change ourselves, but first we must know ourselves. In this film, we see that Jon and Garfield are nothing more than Jim Davis Ego and Shadow respectively. Jim sees himself as ‘Jon’, a lovable, goofy, kind, creative, and unsuccessful bachelor. He plays it off like he doesn’t care by joking about it; after all, Jim sees himself and tells himself that he’s funny. In reality, Garfield is the side of Jim that he rejects: his shadow. He hates these aspects of himself, that deep within he’s cynical, has a love of laziness and food, which he uses to fill a void in him, and is overall just bitter and disenchanted with life. Through conditioning, most likely by others, he rejected these aspects, and “convinced himself” (ego) that he was funny. The desert scene represents a moment of self awareness and ego death. Jon, the illusion, dies and Garfield, his true animalistic inner self, comes out and is freed. The shadow and ego become one, and the true self emerges. This all as a result of Jim looking back on his creation and waking up, realizing it wasnt funny, and that hes not who he thinks he is. The final scene represents the human condition. That all humans must go on a journey through life, where the cruelty of the world forces them to hide behind a mask, a lie, and become a fragmented being, until they become strong enough to face their own darkness and become whole again. This is the curse the woman speaks of, and why there isnt just a child, but also his shadow: the cat. Sorry, that was long, but its a fascinating topic. If you want to read more, check out stuff about the true and false self online. Its helped me so much in my life.

It is an interesting topic. I also find it strangely comforting. I’m a perfectionist, so the fact that I even have a flawed ‘true self’ usually makes me feel terrible. Even just knowing that everyone else is flawed, and that they’re also pretending they’re not, just makes living a bit more bearable. Also, have you heard about a game called Persona 4? It’s a JRPG based around a murder-mystery, but a lot of the game’s built on the Shadow and Ego concept.

I really like Garfield. The comics aren't funny... at least, not often enough to be considered good. But I still like him. In the rare occurrences when I encounter the comics in a newspaper, I check out Garfield. I don't laugh, but I'm glad to see he's still there. Garfield is cartoon comfort food: nothing of any value and leaves me feeling guilty for enjoying it. Though the 80s-90s cartoon was pretty good.

I just think it's really funny and a huge power move that the creators of lasagna cat were so fed up with the comics and how much the creator pat himself on the back for them that they made a multiple hour long series with high production quality just to tell him to shove it.

@papasmurfsmurfy6360
@papasmurfsmurfy6360 5 жыл бұрын
jjmblue7 That’s stupid, if the parents weren’t neglectful the show would be boring. The point of the show is the kids going on adventures with the perspective of babies, in a way that they are easy to fool and have active imaginations. If the parents acted like real people than the show would be about their diaper being changed. Not to mention that their dangerous situations are basically them ruining around a building
@PitterPatter20
@PitterPatter20 5 жыл бұрын
@@papasmurfsmurfy6360 That's not mutually exclusive to what he said, though. The intent of the story doesn't magically make the implications of the story go away. Yes, the show would be boring if the parents weren't neglectful (well, at least without making major changes) but that doesn't change the fact that they _are_ neglectful. That's not an indictment of the show, that's just the natural consequence of simplistic and unnuanced worldbuilding because the real world is not simple, and so looking at a simplistic fictional world under a realistic lense will essentially always reveal dark implications. Again, that's not a judgement, that's an observable fact.

I would like to add something. You discussed the party video with the mouse stripper one that was also named a "Tribute to Jim Davis", where Jon is portrayed as just another partygoer - one who throws up in the bathroom. Yeah, it seems like it's Garfield's party since the focus is on him. But what if it was Jon's? Since it's, y'know, a "Tribute to Jim Davis" and Jon is a self-insert? Not to mention the "Congratulations for your cat cartoon" message that pops up? Then it would serve as another dig saying Jon, pictured as a loser (despite being a stand-in for Jim Davis), is overshadowed by Garfield no matter what he does. Even in his own party.

*"...and even for all his faults, human feelings are very endearing in an animal."* *"...nobody likes failures in a human being."* these two quotes together have been stuck in my head for awhile now, and when they would pop up in my head, they always got me thinking about non-human characters and they are able to get away with the most mess up shit, even if it's for a little bit, and how this isn't even specific to animal characters either, but also stuff like robots. The one example I can think of up the top of my head is Serial Designation N from Murder Drones for example, he has a cute, friendly, nice, and loveable exterior, but then incomes the realization that he's pretty much a psychotic, mass murdering vampire that has killed innocent Worker Drones by possibly the thousands and is very much likely to kill again when the time comes, if he was human, those nice, friendly qualities that he has would make him out as a sadistic nightmare that no one would want to touch with a 10 foot pole, but because he's a cute looking robot, those qualities all the sudden become endearing! Nevermind the fact that he has a horrifically high body count, just watch him in a cute little suit and tie hang around with his Worker Drone friend that he is likely going to try and kill later down the line, look at him! What a *g o o f b a l l .* Another example I can think of is the cast of Aggretsuko, yeah sure they're cute, anthropomorphic animals, but beyond that, they are very much human, they have dreams and ambitions, they get stressed, they suffer from hardship, they go through the hell of a boring, dead end office job just to get little pay, they get fucked over by others, they face harassment, they scream into a void hoping to god someone, *anyone* hears them. If these characters were human, sure it would still be fascinating to watch, but It certainly wouldn't be as interesting to watch if they were were human, and so the next best thing was to make cute, recognizable animals that simply acted human, Problem solved! There are, of course, a multitude of examplee of this, but I'm gonna stop at that since I think y'all get the point by now.

This brings to mind how Bill Watterson specifically wished that his creation, Calvin and Hobbes, never be monetized into a brand. He didn't want it's "lifespan" to be artificially prolonged; to watch his creation be corrupted by commercialism and time. The very thing that happened to Garfield.

This is funny because you thought about the idea of Jim Davis/Jon Arbuckle being somewhat disappointment that Garfield was his successful comic/the real star without covering or knowing about Davis' earlier work, including a series that basically was proto Garfield and lasted a year before syndication and renamed into what we know now. The 1976-1978 comic strip, Jon. Originally, Jon was not just the title character but the focus of what was going on and Garfield was just a side character. But overtime, the cat became the real master and Jon was reduced to a fool to always be abused and mocked by his own pet.

31:55 I think this shot just does not have enough layers. We have the night mind logo, the baby blurred out in the toilet, jon talking to himself at the door, and then we have a growing picture of the lasagna cat face. But I think it could use just a few more layers to be honest.

As strange as this sounds this can and has happened to many artist of any kind, the creator doesn’t get loved or doesn’t get noticed as much as his/her/their character(s). Example: the creator of Sherlock Holmes the book series originally was gonna kill of Sherlock, too which he did due to Sherlock getting recognized and loved more than the creator himself. But when he did, people went after him and sent letter on how they’re upset, so to satisfy his “fans” and “supporters” he made it so Sherlock faked his death. So he sacrificed his own happiness basically just to satisfy people who love a single character that isn’t even real.

I feel like i can answer your question, you see there is one lasagna cat video that is on the website instead of youtube (note. people have uploaded that video to youtube) but anyway what happened was that there was one video that lasagna cat made, that was copyright striked by paws, inc because in that one video, people were asking paws if they could have breakfast with garfield which prompted paws to copyright strike the video and i think that is why it says that in that one part

Its interesting on what you said about jim Davis and jon being based on each other. Because there was a prototype series of Garfield where jon was the main character. It was only changed when someone suggested to switch the focus to Garfield because he had the best lines.

It's obviously much more than a joke; they would not put so much into it if they did not want to "enlighten" us on something. It's as much a joke as Live Forever As You Are Now With Alan Resnick is; sure, it has comedic elements, but it communicates a message. The type of people who say that people like NightMind overanalyse these videos are the same people who do not notice the smaller details, such as the official supplementary channels "lazycat619" and "darthmauldog1125". Now I am rambling, so "Garfeild" XD XD

The funny part, which the makers of Lasagna Cat didn't know, is that if you look at the next day's strip after the Pipe strip, it's a follow-up and actually makes the strip funny (well, relatively funny anyhow).

Considering how much time & effort went into Lasagna Cat, they surely DID know, and deliberately chose this day's strip instead of the followup. Their point is much stronger when you don't know the second half of the joke.

The most depressing part about it, is that the creators of Lasagna Cat are now in the exact same position, forever bound to their creation, which will surpass them and live on when they are long forgotten.

This is the best dissection and and criticism of all the "dark theory" content out there. I remember that the first few times I heard stuff like that, with the coma and apocalypse theories, I thought it was cool. It got old very quickly, and now it's irritatingly common and terribly unoriginal. I feel like it's too often a response to taking an otherwise positive show and trying to make it "edgy" for edgy's sake. When you can't make one theory about a show remotely attractive (ex. apocalypse theory for Adventure Time when the setting is already post-apocalyptic), just make another dark theory about it! I know that the need to contrast entertaining media with its opposite is appealing but when it's one edgy and overdone theory after the other you end up wanting to block everything out and enjoy the show/comic/book/etc. for what it is rather than reading ten more Squidward's Suicide clones. I hadn't heard of Lasagna Cat before this and I think this is the first time I've seen a piece of well-known media actually taken and made to become creative, original content that benefits off of previously understood material while bringing something fresh to the scene and actually does the "dark theory" thing right. Not gonna spend a day of my life to watch hours of the show, though.

No joke, I straight up found this at some point while growing up and loved it. I remember watching tons of these, and always loving the music videos at the end. All I remember from back then was one of the post-comic gags was set to be this cool pixelated RPG style game that I wished was real after seeing it. This channel is also what I think of anytime i hear "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
