So you know how your drain works, how to put it together, and what the components do.

@@muddymike It was not easy getting a perfectly even sloped surface. As hard as I tried, I still had some minor low spots that I then tried to level with thinset even though I was not sure if that was a good idea. And in the end I don't know if those minor low spots would matter at all. How did yours turn out?

@@cryptocomplete leveling the slope with thinset sounds like a good idea to me, if you have craters and imperfections. Im letting the concrete set over the pvc rubber liner now, tomorrow i’m putting up wall board. I’ll leave about a 1” gap between the concrete floor and the wall board, to prevent water wicking up the wall... then hopefully get the seams and screw holes mudded up ready for waterproofing membrane the next day

Do you have to use a pan liner if using Hardie Backer board when waterproofing the board with a paint on waterproofer such as ARDEX. How would you then seal over the drain flange so the waterproofing coat system goes into the drain ?

Bob... That Kohler drain in your video has no mounting holes in the lower flange. Did you leave the drain assembly floating and then allow the mortar to captivate the drain, or did you glue/add screws to mount the drain to the subfloor before pouring mortar?

It's actually better to cut out the entire circle and not just the "X" reason being is if you leave the "Flaps" in the pan liner it will create a seal between the hub (second piece you push in) and in most cases will not allow much water to escape if and when water seepage does occur. Best way is to cut out entire circle and apply caulk to the underside of pan liner where it meets drain. (I have tested this on a makeshift bed and filled an entire pan full of water with and without the "X" and the result was night and day in drainage from the pan liner through weeper channels.)

I found that after installing and tightening my upper shower flange mount, its crushing the membrane I used and is blocking the weep troughs on the underside of the upper mount. Water will sit up to the level of the upper mount and not drain out. Would it be wise to try and cut slots in the membrane to match where the weep troughs are?

If someone may please give me some advice. I have a stand up shower with mosaic tiles on the floor and big square tiles on the walls. It's in my master bedroom and leaking downstairs living room. I broke walls and i should not have, but non the less, i confirmed the piping is good and no leaks. i put duct tape very well at the drain of the shower inside on the floor. I filled it up from another source with water up to the curb or step almost. It's dripping downstairs. Is there another test to let me know if my pan liner is shot, or my grout is leaking? When i visually look at it, the grout looks ok. Silicone around the edges looks ok. Any ideas? Only thing i can think of, is not filling it up all the way and see when it starts to leak as i fill it. Any help would save our family so much money. Thanks so much.

Question about determining outside height of pre-pitch in a rectangular shower. Do we simply determine to height at the furthest point from the drain and draw level line from that? It seems that would make the shorter distances much steeper than the 1/4" per foot determined at the furthest point (corner). Or do we change the height accordingly as we go around the outside of the pan area, to maintain the 1/4" per foot pitch consistently? [did that make any sense?]

Yeah. I watched a video the other day and that installer mounted the drain on top of those little nubs. Oatey and Sioux Chief (makers of a drain) both say to mount the drain flush to the floor, say mount it flush when doing a pre-slope. But I'm with you. Seems if it were mounted on the nubs, you could get the mud deck or pre-slope material up under the drain. I'll paste the link to the video I watched.

Here's the video where this installer mounts the flange on the nubs. This seems better even if it goes against what the manufacturer recommends kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLpkd6x9r9e-f2w.html

@@StarrTile most code is presloped and they don't perform as they should because most are too mild a slope. Preslope should not be less than 3/8". It is safe to say mud saturates and wicks but with no slope it puddles. That will never evaporate.

Cutting your plywood on an angle like that defeats the whole purpose of mounting it in plywood. You're putting those mounting screws into about a 1/4" thickness of wood, they're not doing crap. And your whole explanation about doing that, so water that has left the pan can drain is completely ridiculous. The only thing you've done is compromised the stability of your drain. After watching a half-dozen or so of your videos I see that you talk a lot about problems without providing a basis for what you are talking about. For instance, in this video you go on about "some people cut an X, but some people cut a circle and you don't understand why some people cut a circle........" and on for a while. I see this kind of talk in many of your videos. I have no idea what you are talking about cutting -- all I know is that you don't like how some people cut it, whatever it is. Most of your videos seem to be about what was done wrong. Do you have any videos on how to do it right -- start to finish?
