Panama is an epic, historic adventure. Discover the Old Quarter of Panama is San Felipe, also known as Casco Viejo. Completed and settled in 1673. This city was built on a peninsula completely isolated by the sea and a defensive system of walls.
This was built following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city known as Panama Viejo which was founded on August 15, 1519, lasting 152 years until the Governor Juan Perez de Guzman set on fire in 1671 just before the attack and looting by the pirate Henry Morgan.
Our morning started with crossing under the Bridge of America’s and was topped off as we arrived in the late afternoon sun of the Caribbean Sea.
The Panama Canal’s history dates back to the Spaniards when they arrived in the isthmus, with a dream of connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The first effort to build a waterway through Panama was with the French in 1880 but financial difficulties and tropical diseases stopped the French initiative in its tracks.
After the separation from Columbia in 1903, Panama signed with the United States for the construction of the canal which was inaugurated on August 15, 1914 and the waterway was managed by the US until December 31, 1999. Panama then took on Full Canal operations, including modernization and expansion, and it is managed by the Panama Canal authority.
The canal works as a Maritime shortcut to save distance time and cost, transporting cargo. It is approximately 80 km long, operating with a sophisticated, three lane lock system that works as a water elevator lifting vessels to Gatun lake 27 m above, sea level, allowing them to cross the central mountain range, and then lowering them back to the ocean on the other side of the isthmus.
