Today I’m sharing 6 of the weirdest watercolors ever by Holbein. They are very strange but when mixed together create such a wonderfully intriguing palette of colors. Let me introduce them then create a color mixing chart so you can see the beauty hidden inside. Sit back and enjoy, thank you for joining me!

YESSSSSS!!!! Their Davy's Grey is a staple on my palettes, also the Green Grey, the Shell Pink, and the Yellow Grey! I haven't tried their Mars Violet or Dusk Green yet but I will have to pick those up, like, tomorrow!🤣🤣 Sometimes when I know I want to create something, but just can't think of what to do (aka art block) I do charts of random color mixes, sometimes I close my eyes and dig around in piles of watercolor tubes I put on the ground around me! It's not a waste, it's education.

As always, it is pure joy to watch you mix. I have been pulling the 'weirdest' combinations of colors I could pick and making swatch cards ever since I saw you doing this in your videos. The results are absolutely delightful and yes - it makes me a better artist. "Wasting paint???" Pfffffft! It is part of the creating and learning process! Experimenting is NEVER a waste to me! At first didn’t want to “waste” my good paper, as a beginner & learning to mix do use more paint than feel should? Then saw if don’t practice on paper going to use for final painting (get used to the cellulose paper) then try good cotton & feels all new (each paper) has different strengths & weakness. Nice to have a good grey base but often mix my own grey’s. If was a millionaire yes love those colors!

I know in watercolor you are told to mix colors and paint but seriously Holbein should do a collab with you to make a special color palette. I would purchase it for sure! Also when purchasing a class from you do we need exact brand and colors for the color mixing? Thanks for another great teaching video. I'm in love. lol

OMG, I would love to collaborate with Holbein because their weird colors are my favorite! Can you imagine the colors we could create LOL? For my courses, I always suggest you use the watercolors you already have. I always share my exact colors/brands that I use but you don't need them for my classes. That being said, in Cultivated Color, I would say to use the colors/brand just so you see the same results I get in my sketchbook.

@@kellyhoernigI definitely agree with her! I think if the clarity of your videos like this were clear like others, you would most certainly get a chance at that with them. That’s really interesting how much you can get from just 6 colors! And I don’t think they’re weird, they are pretty just out of the tubes, but it’s mesmerizing how many variations they can turn into. One thing that I’d love to hear you talk about on another video is value - I think I can understand the concept for black and white, but with colors I am a bit lost.
@kellyhoernig
@kellyhoernig 3 ай бұрын
Value is just a lighter or darker tone of the color. Here's a simple way to create value with a color. Draw 5 boxes. In the first box use the watercolor with hardly any water, this is called a masstone. For the next box, add a touch of water and mix well. For the remaining boxes keep adding water to the mix and fill them in. You should get a gradual dark to light value scale from this exercise. Happy experimenting!

I have learned so much from watching this video, my colour mixing charts always somehow go wrong about half way through, I know now that I was not approaching them right, you make it very very logical. By absolute coincidence I recently -a couple of weeks ago- ordered seven colours that almost correspond to yours, except there is a buff titanium and some of them granulate. Obviously already granulating colours will be more difficult to mix, but I definitely love the colour range and potential of this kind of selection, the gorgeous natural green for me are their biggest attraction. I have never used Holbein but really like their softer more muted colours. I like artists who will break some of the formal colour rules and use the pastel or lights creatively too. Thanks so much for this video, it was a delight.
@kellyhoernig
@kellyhoernig 3 ай бұрын
I am so happy that you found the answer to making color charts YEAH! Buff will do amazing things to all the colors, it is one of my favorite all time mixers so have fun exploring it. For the granulating colors, just make sure to use water, that is what makes them so magical - room to spread and granulate. No formal rules here, just go with your gut and pick the colors that speak to you. It is the best way to choose a unique palette.

I love that the splashing brings out the whole range of values for each mix. (And any suggestions about the splashing bit would be really helpful to me.)
@kellyhoernig
@kellyhoernig 3 ай бұрын
The splashing does get all over but with me taping and rinsing off the color from my brush there is enough time for it to not be so messy with water. When not taping I can usually do 3 squares before splashing, just depends on how fast you paint.

It hasn’t gotten any complaints so far, though-in fact, I get a lot of compliments on my color palettes, so I think I’m alright for now! I do plan on experimenting with different pigments at some point, but for now I’m focused on learning what the basic colors do together first. I adoreee the palette these colors made btw. I don’t paint landscapes but there’s a very dreamy and almsot gloomy quality that I love

This is my first time to your channel and I'm so glad that you came up in my suggestions. I am new to watercolor although I do paint in other mediums my primary medium is to use colored pencil in a way that turns it into a painting. I do photorealistic animals in pencil and in acrylic I work very realistic animals although not photorealistic. I used to paint landscapes in oil many many many many many many years ago and due to health problems I have had to stop doing that. So now I am venturing into watercolor. I miss painting landscapes very much they were so relaxing for me. So I am beginning to acquire in very few artists grade watercolors. I'm physically disabled and so finances don't allow me to just jump in and get things that I would so love to get. I am so grateful to see your color mixes because they are more natural to doing landscapes and seascapes as well as to working backgrounds for animals. I hope to be able to learn to use watercolor for animals as well. This color mix that you have shown is so beneficial for me because I live in Phoenix Arizona and the greens and purples that you have come up with are just pure to our native colors. I am definitely your newest subscriber and I will be watching the things from the past that I have missed.

So many artists always talk about "dirty" colors...or "muddy" colors. It's so nice to see that there are other people who love those colors as much as I do! I'm not a fan of bright colors, unless I need it to make another color "dirty" or "muddy"... 😂🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I was also born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s...so black and dark moody colors were my thing 🫣 I used to always use them when I'd do my makeup. I became a licensed and certified makeup artist/cosmetologist. So many people would come to me for those types of looks since most makeup artists won't do "dirty" looks. That sounded bad, but y'all get it 🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤫 anyway, once I started making custom furniture, guess what. I either keep the wood natural, put some stain on it...or paint it a "dirty" color I mix myself 😂 it really surprises me that more artists (obviously not the "pure" ones) don't like muddy colors. 🫤 I feel like they get such a bad rap. Thank you for sharing all of your amazing mixes with us!

I am trying to keep the horizontal row more to the color everything is mixing with. So it isn't about using more of that color, it is about keeping it to the tone of the color. So in the Mars Violet row, I want everything it is mixing with to be on a violet tone. On the Yellow Grey row, keep the color mixes on the yellow tone. This way allows you to see more colors emerging on your color charts. Let me know if this helps explain it more for you.

@@kellyhoernig TYSM! ❤️🌷 Those are lovely colors, and the finger-flicking of water is genius.

@@ashleywright8686 you are very welcome! The splashes are all because I like my paintings to have a lot of texture and this achieves it quite quickly.

I thought for sure you were going to have their weirdest color, peach black :-) it’s my favorite for monochromatic studies with all its tone variations and Lift ability… I’m gonna have to try the Mars violet

@@kellyhoernig yeah! Holbein is the only one who offers it. It is a pigment I had never heard of called PBK 1… It granulates, and it has this weird property where if you lift it off with paper towel it leaves behind a pinkish tone, which is where I think they got the peach name. The other tones that very within the different strengths are bluish… They call it a warm black that dilutes to a warm gray, but I find it really interesting with its color changing strangeness! Even stranger, it is actually light fast, which is not a common property in pigments that color change, usually associated with dyes:-) absolutely you should check it out!

@@creativesolutions902 the pinkish undertones sounds a lot like Daniel Smith's Hematite Violet Genuine which is one of my most favorite colors. Thank you for letting me know more about it!
