You did a fine job of telling the story. I have fond memories of the Burger King facility there. At the time, it was decent food at a decent price. When my mother had died, I spent 5 airlines and 6 cities just trying to get home. TWA was kind enough to put me in first class on the last leg (the TWA leg) of my trip... Thank you TWA for your service and compassion.

I flew with TWA and Pan Am while in the Army, even though I flew on a government ticket, I was treated great. The people who worked for both airlines, I would like to thank you for some of the best flying experiences I ever had.

My first flight ever was from KSTL to KLAX via a TWA L1011. I was nine years old. I won't ever get to take such a good flight again.

I'm Venezuelan, and i spent 2 months training the embraer 190 there in ST Louis, i was in love looking Lambert apt every morning from My Window's hotel, You feel the terminal 1 like a museum, a Lot of people a met there, sim instructors, were twa pilots 20 yrs ago, it was an amazing experience for me, i love ST Louis and its people✌️

Thanks for the tour. In the 90s I flew through STL on TWA many times. I always had a special fondness for TWA. Many times I ran down the C and D concourses to catch a flight. Back in the day they were so crowded. When they prohibited smoking in the concourse, they build those smoking rooms. Often they would be cram packed with people and the smoke was so thick you couldn’t even see through the glass. I do remember one time on an old DC9 we were descending through the clouds in a rainstorm for 30R. When we broke through the clouds at a few hundred feet, there was still an aircraft on the runway. The captain throttled up the engines and we had to go around. It’s amazing how quiet the cabin can get. I have lots of good memories of TWA.

As a St. Louis native, I just want to say thank you for helping preserve a chapter of KSTL history. I’m too young to remember the TWA days, but from the pictures and videos I’ve seen across the internet in the years since the buyout in 2001, I’m sure it was a sight to behold. And I’m so glad I finally got to see the video the local news talked about a while back. I know you got in trouble filming this, but for aviation history buffs (much less St. Louis-Lambert) like us, this is an incredible look back at what once was in the Gateway City. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I remember the mid 80s TWA used gates at the end of concourse C for international flights. It was an extension of the concourse with higher ceilings from which flags from different countries were hung. The concourse was always crowded back then. I remember seeing departure and arrival information for flights to/from London, Paris, Rome, and so many other cities, primarily in Europe and South America. It’s so sad to see what’s become of it.

I know that the D concourse was last used at least early 2011 because at 5:31 it says "Thanks for your patience as we see the tornado restoration through." And then it says the C concourse will reopen April 2012.

Unless something changed after I left in 2001, that upper level in the C concourse had classrooms that we used for continuing education. Customs was in the lower level of the C. I worked for TWA from late 1990 until mid 2001 of which early 1998 until the end was spent working at the gates and then the service centers at the airport. Prior to that I worked in various capacities at the reservation office. Thank you for making this video. It brought back some very bittersweet memories. ❤❤❤

Great job on this tour of the abandoned TWA D Concourse St Louis. You did a lot of work to put this video together. Thank you. I flew on a TWA 747 only once from Boston to JFK back in 1983. It was a very short fight of 187 miles. I flew this flight just so I can fly on the TWA 747.

TWA was acquired by American in early 2001 several months before 9-11. American purchased most of the TWA assets called it TWA LLC. They didn’t purchase the entire company. Trans World Airlines, Inc. filed Chapter 7 liquidation.

Wow! I was never in there after TWA closed in 12/01. AA continued to maintain the hub for 8 yrs. Seeing this, it seems rather obvious that AA was never serious about keeping this hub long-term since they were there almost a decade and kept the TWA theme... which is really bizarre since some big blue stripes through the red would've at least made it AA colors.

My dad worked for TWA for over 35 years. He did work in St. Louis, but mainly in Chicago. Now his good friend got transferred to St Louis. My dad and his good friend worked in ramp service. They both would say it was the best job they ever had. They said they enjoyed visiting the flight crew before and after the flights. They would load cargo and also bring up the food carts. Both now have passed away. My mom is still living and still gets to fly standby but on American Airlines. I still have a few TWA items. In the 1970’s, I remember dad telling me then, instead of dumping any untouched left over food trays, some employees got to keep it. It usually went to someone who was in dire need. One day, a flight attendant was crying, bc they were going on strike. She was worried how was she going to feed her family. Dad collected as many untouched leftover wrapped sandwiches and gave it to that flight attendant TWA felt like family. Dad said employees would look out for each other. In the late 1979’s, he got me a photo from another employee who developed his roll of film and gave dad a photo of an important private passenger. Pope John Paul was using the entire plane for his flight to Chicago. The plane landed at O’Hare and out of all the ramp crew employees, the Pope came across another ramp employee. Dad said that it was fitting for that TWA employee to meet Pope John Paul, bc he was a devoted Catholic with sick child at home. Dad said, that encounter made his co worker feel loved & that the Pope understood the fears he was feeling. Dad said he wasn’t jealous to not meet the Pope bc we all went to Catholic school and had the day off for the Pope’s visit in Chicago. Dad said it was about the other guy needing to have that positive experience. God Bless you for making the video.

I flew into that airport on TWA to catch my military chartered flight from St. Louis to Yokota Air Base, Japan. This was back in 1983. Great memories!

As an addendum to this idea you may be able to obtain Archival Footage of some of the International Shows from NBC I remember they were there setting up pre Dawn in PHX at the Camel Back Inn and Resort doing Stand ups and interviews with Vendors and Attendees I think it was used as Special Interest Segment on the Today Show in both 1995 and 2000! Brings back good memories to me!

The area above C28 was for the TWA Ambassador's Club, not customs. The walkway lead to a crew rest area away from the passengers, if you needed a nap or had an extended time between flights. I was a TWA F/A until we got sold, er, bought out.

Great video! Flew in yesterday to transfer flight on Southwest. Hadn't been there since the TWA days when I was a kid. It was sad to see the state of the airport with all those empty gates.

This is like a hidden time frozen place that you know it's somewhere in the building waiting to be rediscovered.

I flew TWA in late 2000 because Delta missed its connection in the now closed hub of Cincinnati to make San Diego. So they put me on a TWA flight to St. Louis switching planes and continuing on to San Diego. The first flight was almost empty - they put all 6 of us into first class because the DC-9 was way too big for the few passengers. Then we go to Terminal D in St. Louis where i had to run from one end of the terminal to the other to make my flight. The second flight was busier, and I sat in coach on another DC-9. The terminal was old as were the planes. They got me to San Diego on time however with no trouble. It was the last time I flew TWA as they went bankrupt for good in early 2001 and I never flew them again before being acquired by American.

TWA was hands down the most efficient way to fly cross country. I'm a Californian who grew up in the 1960's. Still very sorry it does not exist--I was a kid when the JFK terminal was constructed. I flew on the airline in the 90's as a passenger. There's nothing like it now...

Born and raised in STL. I spent many hours in the secure area just walking around. This was before 9/11 and TSA. I was 17 and roamed freely through the concourses. I remember when they opened D for Southwest. I also worked the ramp for TW Express (Trans States) and ATS working Sun Country and Champion Air. That BK right after security always made the area smell greasy and weird, but it was a good smell though.

I used to work there when that part of the terminal was opened. That carpet on the walls was PINK, not (faded) red. All of us who worked there thought it was a strange choice. But that section that you walked through was the Ozark concourse before they were merged into TWA. It was such a long walk to baggage claim!

The airline and airport that inspired me to become a pilot in the early 90’s. I’m not sure if anyone remembers, but there used to be a part of this terminal that had a mural on the wall. It was a mural that made it seem as if you were in an airplane looking out the window onto the clouds. It was really well done. If you looked through the mural “windows” you could see out into the clouds and some had distant TWA planes. I distinctly remember this when I was 4 or 5 years old in 1990/91. I remember a TWA l1011 in the distance if you looked hard enough just another example of the charm this airport had. If anyone knows what I’m talking about or where in the terminal this was located, I’d love it if you comment and refresh my memory.

I use to fly through there in the 90's. It was my layover each way between Shreveport and RDU. I remember looking out that window @4:30 That was the first place I ever used those people movers

TWA Flight 800 was the final nail in their coffin..In the 50's TWA flew the beautiful Lockheed Super Constellation, they had more of them than any other airline.

Transited many times on TWA through STL in the late 80's-mid 90's, mainly LGA-STL-LAS (occasionally PHX) in both directions. Many fond memories from a better time.

Worked for TW at MCI for almost 23 years and 34 years at WN at DAL. Brings back memories of all the times we went through STL. Last long TW flight was to HNL.

Most of my memories are connected to TWA in NY although I had a few trips pass through STL. I worked for 3 different Trans World Express operators. Metro Air Noreast, Westates [Convair 580's] and finally TWE, Inc. Each had some good memories and I miss them terribly. There are still signs of TWA if you know where to look. Delta still flies many ex-TWA a/c. This morning, I watched N721TW/DL341 BOS-SEA fly along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Of course, I dragged out my binoculars and watched it fly by. As the saying goes among many things, "Never forget." Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the concourse tour of my local airport! I think that food court used to have a Pizza Hut in the 90s. I vaguely remember eating personal pan pizzas there before flights.

The upper level above C-28 by that circular stairs is where the Ambassador's Club was located until the mid 90's. IIRC they closed it when they opened the new club (where the Admirals Club is now) around 1995-6 at the C/D connector

We transited the D Concourse several times over the years as it was huge requiring use by many different aircraft.

You should make a video about PanAm and our demise after selling off the Pacific to United in 1986 and the London hub in 1990 and the hostile take over by Delta in 1991. We were the airline who made it possible for other airlines to fly over water and land. We came up with the Jeppesen airport charts and waypoints enroute. A good story about corporate greed and big egos. I can recommend a book written By Robert Gandt Skygods about the fall of Pan American.. Very factual and interesting aviation reading.. Really enjoyed your TWA video. Both TWA and PanAm were good to each other's employees when it came to non rev travel. They would always find a jumpseat in the last moment.

One of the last times I used the D concourse was in 1998. Coming home from Las Vegas, our departing flight was delayed due to it snowing in Vegas (first time in 20 years). I literally had to run the entire length of the D concourse to catch my connection on the C concourse. I didn’t make it 😔

One thing you need to change, TWA was bought out on April 10, 2001. Before 9/11. Us TWA employees were already American Airlines employees on 9/11.

I attended a Travel school up in STL in the early 80's We lived in an Hotel 🏨 Apartment in St Anne's right across the Freeway from Lambert Field So of course I spent a lot of time at the Airport! I know the Concourse you filmed! It was a bustling place! Idea: I don't know if you're familiar with ATP(Air Transport Photography) a commercial Aircraft Modeling Company run by the late Clint Groves in San Jose California He was quite a character! If you attend the Airliners Shows you could find modelers who would remember him! I used to build in 1/144 Scale back in the day! And have attended many shows A Documentary about the 🎥 Airliners Cult could be fascinating! I've lost contact with most of the people but there may be a couple of Vendors who are characters in their own right! And they'd probably be glad to talk to you! It's a 🌎 world with it's own unique nomenclature! John Cox used to attend the shows! He may still! I myself worked for COEX years ago doing Ramp/Underwing servicing the old ERJ 135's/145's at one of the Outstations We were also a Class A MX station 🚉! Just thought this might be of Interest to you! You did a nice job with this video. Interesting you can even get into that area. I'm surprised it's not locked down. Seems as though you could get onto the tarmac, which is a safety concern.

It seems like all the major airlines left and abandoned MIDWAY AIRPORT. SOUTHWEST is now the major carrier. I remember when TWA was a major airline here. Now mostly independent airlines now dominate Midway Airport. This video kind of reminds me of Midway Airport when the major airlines like American airlines and United airlines moved out and only use O'Hare airport.

Loved this - so did AA take over and then leave in 2009? The map showed an Admirals Club (AA). AA didn’t renovate the concourse because they knew it would eventually be shut down so it wasn’t worth the investment. I loved TWA, it makes me a little sad to see the shots of the before and after in the beginning.

I flew on TWA my first trip to Athens, Greece from JFK in 1982 I was hook on flying ever since I was 23 yrs old I'm 63 now. I have taken a flight some where every year since.

So sad to see anything that was once packed with customers so abandoned now, especially in a good economy. Hopefully the people who worked in these p!aces were able to find other jobs. Perhaps maybe one day these now abandoned places will come back to life, offering many descent jobs to people who need them.

It’s kinda sad to see this the Airport in this state, but American having hubs in Dallas Fort Worth & Chicago O’Hare didn’t really need the St. Louis hub. It was sad to hear how bad American treated its TWA employees. American played commercials saying 2 great airlines 1 great future. I looked into St. Louis Lambert Field and online plans have been started to consolidate the Airport into us just 1 terminal. The plan show that they are looking use terminal 1 and keep domed terminal 1. From terminal 1 would be connected into a centralized single concourse which would be all new built. But this means demoing Terminal 2 and Course D. The plans look very good so far which would make one big concourse with 80 gates. But it’s nice to see they want to keep the special architectural things that make the airport unique. Thanks for sharing this video! I remember the airport back in its busy past every summer I would fly back from California to St. Louis to visit my family that lives in St. Louis. Let’s hope these plans build a much better future Airport for the people of St. Louis!

Damn shame what happened at Lambert. Airport leadership leaves a lot to be desired in STL. They cater to lesser than low cost carriers too much.

Any idea why they’re still playing the music down the speed ramp hallways? Whatever the reason is, it’s actually rumored to still be the original elevator music from the TWA era. Not sure about the music if that’s official or not, but I heard that they kept the security announcement about unattended luggage confiscation in that concourse that was actually from its big days. Did you ever hear it playing down there when you didn’t have the camera on?

It’s a shame that they just have that section empty and abandoned like that. I’m sure there was a lot of history tied with that place. I remember TWA. I remember watching planes when they used to have a parking spot you’d go to watch airplanes here at lambert. Lot of twa’s coming and going. Never be in one. I was about 9 or 10 years old then in 99 and in 2000. It’s a damn shame that they went out of business and they don’t have that spot no more to look at planes. Ever since 9/11 and probably the expansion of the new runway then had to do with it. But that abandoned terminal they should do something with it. Unless they let it be do to it’s meaning I guess.

They are opening up the rest of the C concourse in St. Louis next month.

This is from a time when people looked and acted decent when they traveled. Now people show up at the terminal's looking like they just came in from the beach or even a homeless convention and some of them act like over grown whiny children.

Funny that the phone book was showing April 2009. I was an extra in the movie "Up in the Air" and that was shot in April 2009 in terminal D. That may have been a leftover prop from the movie. I remember getting a ride from the staging area in C over to D and they had taken over a good chunk of the closed D section.

Is it true that Southwest is now using part of Concourse D? Is this the part that slopes down near E34 walking East towards terminal 1?

This is a fascinating video of a once great airline and the remains of its infrastructure. It raises a plausible question that the producer never answered. Why, after 20 years since TWA’s demise, does this sizable concourse remain unused? Is the airport dying because of the loss of TWA, the abandonment of the McDonnell Douglas complex, or the market encroachment of the newer Mid America Airport? Also, the video indicated the presence of an Admiral’s Club and lounge but there was no exploration of this area. As a former broadcast news photographer, I would encourage to pick your shots carefully and avoid repeated views of the long, empty hallways. The same would apply to your narration where you mention the “iconic red color” several times. If you intend to grow your audience remember that brevity is the key to telling a story that will attract viewers. As a final suggestion, I would encourage you to invest in stabilizing gimbal to smooth out some of your shots. Doing so will provide a more polished product.

Thank you, so much, for that. It brought back so many memories. The part where you went behind the check in counter and looked at the empty shelves is where employees could check/list/change flights. They had some computers there that we could use if you were wearing your TWA badge. We could also sign in at the check-in counter on the front but it never failed that a passenger would come up to ask a question if you did that. Sometimes, I actually had the answer ie, where is my gate? Don't ask me what that entry is now though. That was before they put all of that stuff online. And those closed restuarants.... yes, some of them are local and I know them well. Back then, in the 90's and even the 2000's you could walk the entire D Concourse down to Southwest Airlines. That was a longgg walk. I used to do it when I had one of those all-day waits while trying to get on a flight as a standby. I've been to that Cinnabon a time or two. I remember when it was a busy, light, bright and crowded concourse. So sad, to see what has happened to it. You are right about TWA being the largest and most respected airline in its' heyday. I worked at the Training Center where TWA housed premier, state-of-the-art flight simulators. Other carriers sent their pilots to the TWA Training Center to get certified. In the comments, someone mentioned how they used to go the airport as a kid just to watch the planes take off. We did that, as well. It was our Sunday afternoon entertainment. Thank you, again, for the memories.
