For morally corrupt characters, I think it's a good idea to show both the advantages (payoff) and disadvantages (punishment) for their actions and mindset. The tv show Yellowstone does this in interesting ways.

I would say it might not be possible to overcomplicate a character if you’re going for a perfect reflection of reality, but it’s definitely possible if you’re going for clarity of theme. Not to mention (and arguably unlike real life), there’s an expectation in fiction that you will get an explanation for weird or out of character behavior. Too much of that and you’re going to have way too much to explain. So Im not sure I agree that it’s impossible to overcomplicate a character (in fiction)

Wuthering heights is full of immoral characters but i think it works because their bad behavior is never condoned even if we get an insight as to why they act that way
