East Harlem, Spanish Harlem, El Barrio, Exploring East Harlem, Manhattan, NYC, New York City
In this vlog I explore one of my favorite neighborhoods in Manhattan, East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, or El Barrio. The neighborhood has a vibrant showcase of Puerto Rican culture. It has lots of restaurants, shops, and a local vibe to NYC. The neighborhood is in the northeast part of Manhattan from 5th avenue starting at 96th street all the way to 142nd street. Hope you enjoy this video, stay tune for more.

Beautiful murals around the area. There's so much talent whether it be art, music, etc. It's a vibrant neighborhood, especially during the spring/summer when there are festivals with salsa music and dancing. I love El Barrio...thanks for a great post, Manny!

Love your facemask Manny. Hope it's designed for protection not just looks. That used to be my neighborhood. I lived on 104th bet 3rd and Lex and worked around the corner, 3rd Ave bet 104th and 105th. You mentioned Tito Puente. His mother, Ercidia Ortiz, was a native of San Germán, my hometown in Puerto Rico. According to Tito himself she was his biggest influence, the one who helped and motivated him the most to pursue a career in music. If only so he could stop driving her crazy by hitting the pots and pans in her kitchen. 😀 Thanks for sharing buddy. Loved seeing my old hood once again. Regards from Puerto Rico. Be safe.🇵🇷.

Grew up in Brownsville Brooklyn, but Spanish Harlem was my first love. For a young Latino paradise. The women in the spring, dios mio. In the 70s I used to attend as Latin school of music. Played congas. Forgot the name If anyone remembers please let me know if still open.

Thank you for making this video. I will be coming to New York in three days, staying on East 100 Street, so this is really helpful for me to see the neighborhood. I love the vibe, beautiful murals and the architecture! I am coming from California and will be in New York for nine days. I don’t like doing touristy things, just want to experience New York on a real local level. Can’t wait!

Keep exploring Manny and exposing our culture as deserved. ☺️That’s the Lares flag and guess who’s from there? My momma. I lived there as a kid and went to school there as well. I have a question for you. My wife and I are planning on buying an apartment in East Harlem because we like the spanish influence. We are mexican and are being told that it could actually be a problem because I guess puerto ricans and mexicans don't get along I guess? I've never heard of that but just wanted to know some more info on it considering you grew up in that neighborhood. Thanks man!
@Los_Chanchulleros
@Los_Chanchulleros 2 жыл бұрын
@@vicenteesparza8867 the problem that people from Mexico have with those from Puerto Rico is that the former cannot bear that while they can be deported, those from Puerto Rico are born with United States citizenship. The rest of the animosity occurs because the emigration of people from Mexico is already too much, and even the Americans themselves feel displaced.

I keep on hearing this term spa ha everywhere. I'm not even from New York City but I was brought there as a baby visiting with my grandparents to visit my grandfather's sister who ended up passing away in the 90s. However even I know even when my grandparents were children Spanish Harlem was still Spanish Harlem. One day I plan to visit and just take in the history of the neighborhood before it becomes a thing of the past. I pray that they still call the neighborhood Spanish Harlem given that there's other Hispanic minorities besides Puerto Ricans living in the neighborhood to at least keep the legacy going on

Nice walk Manny! Love the brownstones. As a DC native, I still think of New York in general as high rises and apartment buildings. I know there are single family homes neighborhoods also. Another thing I've noticed that, yes like you said, it seems New York's keeping the old high rise apartment buildings and other buildings, some being renovated instead of torn down and rebuild to newer. Hence, the older looking neighborhoods through out New York in general. DC does that, but has a lot of newer buildings even within neighborhoods. Dc also much much smaller than New York (NYC). I can imagine it's very expensive in New York to do a total tear down and more cost effective to to a remodel/gut maybe. I guess. :))
@MannyExploresVlog
@MannyExploresVlog 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it might be really expensive in NYC to tear down the building. There are lots of residential areas and neighborhoods with nice houses in NYC, it shows you how huge the city is. Hope I visit DC soon.

Spanish Harlem used to be larger ;at the time when West Side Story takes place in the 1950s there were jobs in New York :the Garmet District was big and going; but today everything is made overseas:there are no jobs Puerto Ricans have no need to go to live in Spanish Harlem,the Bronx or New York;when they can live in Florida or Texas: closer to Puerto Rico and climates more similar to Puerto Rico's climates .So Spanish Harlem is shrinking and disappearing .Also the old Puerto Ricans of Spanish Harlem are old and they are also moving and retiring to Florida and Texas .Why would they stay in New York : harsh climate and high taxes .So there is no new blood to infuse in the barrios of the N.E. and upper Midwest.
