Born 'n raised in Spanish Harlem in1960s/70s. 114th Street & Lexington. Proud Nuyorican. Went to P.S. 57 & I.S. 117. Used to go to the Cosmo with my 4 siblings every summer Saturday. I remember 3 movies and a cartoon. That was our whole day!

I grew up in Spanish Harlem back in the 1980s and 1990s. Born and raised Nuyorican. I've lived in El Barrio all of my life. East Harlem Boricua 4 Life! ✊❤️🇵🇷

I moved to El Barrio from Puerto Rico in 1980. Lived on 104th between 3rd & Lex for about three yrs before my 1st wife abducted me and took me to da Bronx. Before moving there I used to hear stories of people telling me don't go to spanish Harlem, that place is dangerous. The first day there I was scared cause I didn't know anybody but by the 2nd day I was feeling at home, almost as if I had lived there all my life. I used to go visit a friend from back home at 115th st and there I bumped into old friends I hadn't seen for yrs and that was all I needed. By the end of the first week there I was going out at night by myself and never had any problems with nobody. I still miss El Barrio. Love to y'all from Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷🇵🇷

The good ol' days when it had a strong sense of identity and pride. When El Barrio was El Barrio. Now it's gotten so much worse! 🤢 The failure to update restrictive zoning codes with the times combined with excessive demand for space in dwindling supply have pushed costs sky-high, driving residents and small business out of Spanish Harlem and out of town and increasing homelessness and chain stores, not to mention the big-box behemoth that is East River Plaza bringing suburbanites and their polluting cars here!

I’m from Chicago but I feel bad for how some of these areas are getting gentrified and losing their character

They should have visited Capri Bakery! Btw no mention of abusively high rent and gentrification. High commercial rent is what drives away small business and brings more corporate/franchise businesses.
