I loved Gilmore Girls growing up. Now that I'm nearly 30, I feel like the Rory the show sold us was not who she truly was.
Now, I'm sure this topic has been done to death. But here is a video essay where I explain, from my POV, when Rory began to unravel and show her true colors.
Thank you to the ‪@gilmoregirls3827‬ youtube channel, this video would not be possible without their clip uploading efforts. Go follow them :)
a big thank you to ‪@keyofweird‬ for my intro and outro music ❤️

When she didn’t get the journalist job and blamed it on her BOYFRIEND’S FATHER rather than taking all the notes that were given to her and grow… One of the biggest reasons I believe Rory had a downhill was her stubbornness and how unwilling she is to adapt to the environment and situations surrounding her.

I also think she outgrew becoming a journalist in college, and instead of pivoting the character, the writers keep her going after a dream her heart isn't in, thats why she fucks up everything in that career. She is a writer not a journalist.

Thank you for mentioning the kissing Jess part. In the great scheme of things it was minor compared to later events, but it really was the start of her wanting to have her cake and eat it too. Actually!! It started when on *Lorelai's advice* she didn't tell Dean about Tristan kissing her (aaall the way in Season 1) and maintained a cordial relationship with Tristan. I legitimately believe that Lorelai's upbringing is to blame for a lot of the reasons why Rory is the way she is, because Lorelai's growth too was kind of stunted. I agree that Lindsey’s mom had every right to be angry, but I’ve never been a fan of blaming the “other woman” when adultery happens. Dean’s the one who made the commitment to Lindsey and then broke it. Rory was single. She definitely should NOT have slept with a married man or believed him when he said it was over. For me I started to question Rory's behaviour when she started to ignore Lane. So it was pretty early on. When she kept focussing on Dean and her mom rather than hanging out & talking with Lane. Even when Lane confronts her about it, saying she needed to talk to Rory but she wasn't there for her - Rory apologizes but then proceeded to ignore Lane through most of the series. And of course Rory just got more selfish as the series went on. In the revival I felt horrible for Paul, they were together 2 years before that point and by the end of the revival it was 3 years. She strung that guy along for 3 years! Any likeable feelings for Rory went away at that point. That's just cruel. And I know the show tried to make it funny but that's just not funny at all. Not to mention the cheating

Also I think Logan is the dad but since he doesn't want to let go of his own responsibilities towards Odette or his dad's company will probably end up being an absent dad too or I just hope they get married in the second season of the revival since they still have feelings for each other anyway lol

Lorelai's poor parenting angers me even more than Rory's behaviour. when dean cheated on Lindsay with Rory, the blame was very much centred around dean and his bad influence when Rory consented to the sex and played a big part in the affair as well. again when she steals the boat, Lorelai directs the accusations and blame towards Logan when Rory is the one who came up with the idea and basically coerced Logan into joining her. She is never properly held accountable by others, its no wonder she believes she can get away with anything and that everything is already within her reach without her having to put much effort in.

Oh yes, I'm with you. I have a feeling a Lorelai video is due because as bad as Rory was, you could draw a thru line to where she learned it, and also where she never got the lesson really taught to her. Saving your kid from accountability only screws them up in the future, as we've seen with Rory. The affair with Dean was not addressed properly at all. And please don't get me started on the boat....😭 For Lorelai it's always someone else causing it, and not her own daughter.

I agree that Lorelei’s parenting is flawed, but I think she’s the only adult who ever pushes back against Rory. In the cheating and boat stealing incidents, both immediately cause huge, weeks/months long rifts between them. Upon rewatching, there is sort of the theme that Rory’s lack of concern for others starts to increase the more the is exposed to the grandparents’ and the upper class world. I actually wonder if the creators meant for us to see this in her - even if nuanced, every truly rich character in the show is kind of ridiculous in their entitlement.

I completely agree and had come to the conclusion that Odette is the type of wife that the Huntzberger family always wanted for Logan and it was time that he do his job as the only male child and marry and have a son to carry on the name. Odette was chosen for him by his patents and they may have the type of marriage where they each do what they want as long as they keep it secret. Logan realized that he would never really get over Rory until he moved on so he gave in and consented to marry Odette. It was time to grow up and do his family duty. He gave Rory one last chance in the revival to chose him and once again she didn't say anything. She strung Logan along for 15 years.

Thank you for making this video essay, I loved listening to you laying out the events of the cheating! Honestly, I also kinda hate how Rory blatantly misrepresented the facts of Chris and Lorelai cheating; him and Sherry weren’t engaged yet, and he didn’t know she was pregnant when they slept together. Rory twisting these ‘facts’ in her favour during the fight with Lorelai cements Rory’s bratty behaviour. She wants to be a JOURNALIST and twists facts in her favour? She’ll fit in perfectly. 😅

If only that was all she needed to actually be good at journalism. She'd have at least a small career 😂 Rory twisting the facts made me wonder if she truly was trying to divert attention from herself or if that's just really her recollection of it... Because despite Sherry being in the picture, Lorelai did not help him cheat. She heard directly from Chris that it was over for them, and Chris actually left Lorelai to go back with Sherry because he felt it was the right thing to do, accept that he's got a kid on the way. Dean never left Lindsay and it's unfortunate she was slightly manipulated here but she never did ask for concrete proof.... It just felt like this was the wrong thing to throw at someone who is correcting you for good reason.

Rory is the classic big fish is a small pond. She's not that intelligent, she's maladjusted, entitled, incompetent, and a liar. The way Rory treated Dean when she was interested in Jess told me everything about her. Rory wants everything for herself at the expense of everyone around her. The fact that Lorelei tells everyone that Rory doesn't ever lie put Lorelei's blindness up and center. When watching the show as a child, I didn't really get why Chris was Rory's father, but as the show progressed it made perfect sense. Chris wanted to have Sherry and Lorelei and was actively trying to talk Lorelei into staying with him when his girlfriend was pregnant. Rory does the same thing with Logan.

The manipulative aspect has come from years of being allowed to just do whatever with no consequence, sadly 🥲

That’s what bugged me about Lorelai. I understand that Rory’s her daughter, but she always made Rory looked better than she actually was. @@merdelune9 I think that Lorelai views Rory through rose colored glasses because Rory was this hopeful thing that wasn't tainted by the abuse, neglect, and mistakes that the rest of her life was. Rory was a new start and someone who Lorelai could live vicariously through. Someone who could be better than both her parents. You can see, especially in the YITL continuation that Lorelai tries to push Rory into working and making decisions and doing her best. It's something she's been doing all the girl's life. She lies for Rory, she hypes her up and is her biggest PR rep because she needs Rory to be different. But just like Lorelai turned out to be her father, Rory turned into hers.

I feel like Lorelei definitely started seeing the cracks in her outlook of Rory, as someone who could do no wrong, right around when she started noticing how Rory kept inadvertently hurting Dean by constantly toeing the line between being friends and more-than-friends with Jess. At the end of the day, Lorelei knew that first loves don't always last forever and she understood that was a possibility with Rory and Dean, and that Rory might eventually move on to someone new. But I think she was really sort of bemused when Rory kept hanging out with Jess and blowing Dean off, because the right thing for somebody to do in a relationship who's getting pursued by someone else would be to tell that someone else to back off, right? But Rory wasn't doing that, and she kept hurting Dean by NOT doing that and dragging her thing with Jess out, and Lorelei was visibly torn on multiple occasions as to whether or not she should intervene and stick up for the person being hurt by the situation, Dean, even if that meant her own daughter was the 'bad guy' of the situation. I mean, one of the scenes I remember most vividly from the show is Lorelei coming home to see Dean sitting on the porch, essentially defeated, and him saying "she likes Jess, doesn't she?" even though he doesn't really need a confirmation. And you can just see how much Lorelei pities him in that moment, because she really likes Dean and doesn't want to see him hurt, but the person who is hurting him, is Rory.
@chaoticlizsama

Yes! I remember the scene on the porch, and it was a really painful one to watch. It also reminded me of an earlier scene when they're (Dean and Lorelei) standing outside Luke's looking into the window at her flirting with Jess while paying for their tab. I can't remember what was said but it had to be Lorelei reassuring Dean that they were just friends when you can tell that even Lorelei kind of doesn't believe it. These episodes show that there were a few big missed opportunities to correct some of those behaviors early on but they just kept going unchecked.

The other 1 was when rory was planning to drop out & brought up how expensive Yale was, Lorelei was like 'are u paying for it' meanwhile she was fully aware that rory took a loan from her grandparents in order to afford it, so yeah rory was kinda paying for it.

I completely agree with every single word you said here. When I was in my upper-twenties I dated a girl who loved Gilmore Girls. I watched it with her, including the Netflix revival. I was distressed that my girlfriend and her sister seemed to be "Team Lorelai" and "Team Rory" no matter what happened. Lorelai abandons her wedding with Max Medina and offers no communication to him about her feelings? That's fine. Rory cheats on Dean with Jess? That's fine. Lorelai sleeps with a man who is engaged? That's fine. Rory serially cheats on Paul for an entire year instead of just ending things? That's fine. Lorelai and Rory are hedonists; whatever feels good or validating, just do it. Rory in particular is vile: she appears to have no genuine remorse for hurting others, instead merely having a regret because of the complications her sins have caused her.

I never hated Rory more than I did during my rewatch as an adult, while I still enjoyed the show, the flaws really started to peak through. The Revival only cemented my adult opinions. I mean lorelie's love life does serve as the ultimate example for rory. Time and time again the parents are the real example by which most kids live their lives, separated parents, unfaithful marriage, a parent who's not in the picture, all these things and more factor into the way the child thinks and acts later into life. Rory for all her privileges lacked a stable parental guide, her mother went through relationships left and right, her father wasn't in the picture most of the time and wasn't the best example of a good man, and her grandparents bicker most of the time. There was not a set example of a healthy stable relationship in her life to show her what it looks like and how it happens and works. Now I'm not neglecting her responsibility, there is an age of accountability, but this is a build up of bad parenting on the grandparents' part, bad parenting of loreli's part (making a bad choice and having a child too young to know how to raise her right), and rory basing her choices really on how she sees her mother function in relationships. This is a testament to how important it is to have a stable, happy, & healthy marriage if for nothing else than for your kids to have a good example for their own relationships.

Yes, I completely agree with you! Lorelai being the parent that she was to Rory and exposing her to those moments definitely affected her. She is even considering raising her child alone in the Revival due to what she saw in the past, and that is NOT ideal. Being hyper independent can be a problem and Lorelai has always lacked the ability to ask for help when she needs it. Unless it involves Rory. She definitely didn't have the best example of what a loving partnership looks like, and it was to her massive detriment.

I really like this video, because it is possible to see Rory for who she really is without "hating" the character. She isn't the golden child. She is as human as everyone else is. What is actually sad is, that she doesn't grow. She's 32 in the revival and she's the same person. Not only is she the other woman again, she thinks it's okay. And why does she? Because she was never really held accountable for her actions. She made a mistake and everyone just shove it aside, because it was never Rory's fault. Dean getting clingy and possessive? Dean's fault. It wasn't like she was ignoring and lying to him just to be with Jess. Crashing the car. Wasn't her fault, right? It was Jess who drove the car, so it's clearly his fault - even if he gave her the choice and SHE made the choice to keep driving. Stealing the yacht - was Logan's fault. Absolutely. I can see that. *sarcasm intensifies* I'm honest: I don't like the person Rory becomes when she's with Logan. But she'S her own person, right? Everyone is always saying how smart she is. But as soon as there is any kind of trouble, no one seems to think that she has a brain and can think for herself. And seeing the Revival, it is almost as if she can't. But we have to acknowledge, that it isn't all Rory's fault. Lorelai was her role model after all, and she wasn't giving the best example. She dragged Christoper and Luke along the whole time. Jumping from one to the other. Jumping from man to man because she couldn't make up her mind. Max or Luke? Alex or Max? Or maybe a little Christopher in between?! All of this aside: I think that's why we love it. They are human. Making mistakes, fighting, forgiving, making up, and after everything is said and done, they still love each other. That's the beauty and the problem. Jess, for example. As you just said: Rory doesn't deserve the eyes he's giving her, and I will never forgive the writers for making him this pining idiot - still hung up on her, when all he should be doing is giving her the cold shoulder, after how she treated him, and how much blame he took for the downfall of their relationship - when it was both of them. The show pictures that even after you fuck up big time, there's always a way back - but that's not the case. Sometimes there isn't a way back. That should've been the case with Jess and Rory. Rory and Christopher. Christopher and Lorelai. I mean...Excuse me? She sends him a mail that she's getting married? It's none of his business. It's just love to hate, and hate that we love it...

I didn't feel the same way during that scene when Lorelai gets home right after Rory and Dean slept together... When I watched that I felt bad for Rory because I saw a young girl who seemed to have just gotten completely manipulated by her married ex. Like she literally lost her virginity to a married man of course she knows how bad that is but because it's Dean, it's comfort, it's all she knows of long term, loving relationships, she's trying to justify it in her head. So when her mom comes along and brings down the reality hammer, it makes her cognitive dissonance about what's just happened even WORSE, and thus, of course she's going to be upset and defensive. It can be really hard to come to terms with how someone who makes you feel that safe and comfortable can also be someone who lies about it being over with his wife and cheating on her without Rory even being fully aware that it was like that. I still have to finish GG but I started rewatching it from the beginning a couple months ago. It's like watching it for the first time though for me because as a child when I saw episodes here and there on TV my only interest were the cute boys that Rory dated and any time "old people" were on screen I would lose interest haha

I’ve known narcissistic, arrogant, coddled, spoiled girls like Rory and the cheating, especially with married or taken men, is definitely a theme. They really think they’re such perfect wonderful little princesses that they HAVE to have what they want the second they want it. They have to have the taken man, they have to be the more desirable, better woman. It’s essentially a form of throwing a tantrum, and nothing sends them into a downward spiral faster than being rejected or being cheated on themselves. Because how could it happen to THEM? They are so special and perfect and everyone loves them so much, that even men who are already married want them first. That’s also why attempting to talk sense into them never works either. They’re perfect, so why would they listen when you tell them they’re wrong? It’s a sad thing, but girls like that have to be humiliated and have to be hurt to finally see sense and grow up.

As an OG watcher (not really a flex- am old. Lol XD) who watched the series in real time, and saw the steady decline of the mythos of Rory, I was initially pleased by her bad choices- including the kissing of Jess while she was with Dean. I like when a character evolves, including if that means shaking off a "good girl, perfect" image (in quotes because, let's face it, no such thing as perfect). But where I started to get off the train was when she STOPPED evolving. Other characters had up and down arcs that were wonderful- Paris is a perfect example. That girl hopped on and off the villain train like a pro, because although her mannerisms were anything but realistic, she herself as a character WAS. She took circumstances and reacted to them, grew from them... and sometimes made mistakes because of them. You saw her evolve. Rory didn't have that same journey. I think you hit the nail on the head as to why so many people had a bit of a sour taste in their mouth after their revival- they didn't see their girl get that final arc she needed; she'd just dug her heels in and never grew.

I hate Rory in the reboot bc she is full time villain. I mean, not remembering her boyfriend…that’s cruel, but also sleeping with a married man (again), and thinking she’s owed a job smh. In the show she’s a villain many times. From fat shaming/bullying a dancer to cheating to egging a guy’s car with her mom (idc. That’s rude). Idk, when u look at the stats, she is not a good person

After Lorelei picked up Rory from the police station, it was an opportunity for Lorelei to be the ultimate mother. But she totally folds when Rory can't believe she stole a boat and briefly self-chastises herself. Lorelei could have reinforced the mistake and articulate her deep disappointment and to emphasize that that's not how she raised Rory and how Rory is behaving like a rich kid. But she didn't and, in a way, it gave Rory permission to make mistake and not feel too badly about it.

This was so well said. I definitely agree with you. She made a massive life altering mistake and her privilege is what prevented her from spending time in jail for what she did. She's extremely lucky, and her mom could definitely have hammered home the point. Instead, it made her even worse.

I don't think that this is the actual moment where her downfall began. Everything that happend with Jess wasn't better at all. She played with both boys. And she finally decided to dump Dean for Jess. I think the first moment where she noticed she can do things like that and doesn't have to deal with consequences is when she kissed Tristan (nothing wrong with that. Dean broke up with her) and she decided to hide it from Dean. She could've told him. But she decided to lie and to manipulate instead. She decided to actively hide an incident that took place when she was single and make it a cheating. And everything that happend with Jess was based on the day Tristan and Dean met after the incident and she told Tristan specifically not to tell Dean.

I get what your saying but Dean had broken up with Rory at that point so she shouldn't have had to tell him that she kissed Tristan. It wasn't cheating and it didn't really mean anything to her so why should she have had to tell Dean. I think Rory and Dean were both in the wrong during their relationship. Overall I really didn't like why Dean originally broke up with Rory for not being able to say I love you to him just because he was ready to say it so I don't think she was in the wrong for the whole kissing Tristan thing. For me Rory's downfall began when she slept with Dean and kept sleeping with him even after she saw all the damage that had been done.

@@livijohnson4087 You're right. It's not a big deal at all and nothings wrong with that. Her boyfriend broke up, she was sad, that other guy was there. But Rory made it a big deal by hiding it. I think the problem lies in Lorelais "parenting". The more i watch Rory the more i believe she never had set bounderies by any others than her. I think Lorelai got lucky that Rorys self set boundaries had aligned with social standards and being affirmed by everyone around her that she is doing right. Hence when Lorelai kind of makes clear that Rory crosses boundaries and implies negative consequences of course there is push back. Problem is that rory never feels any real consequences to her actions. Without consequences, there is no learning. In her mind she never did anything wrong, because she set the parameter of acceptable behaviour herself and no one really says anything against it.

I say this a lot, and people think I'm somehow defending Rory's actions, but I actually love what they did with her character. With that I mean, I love her from a character writing point of view, not that I think she is a wonderful person. Rory is a perfect mirror to someone like me, a white woman that grew up with stability in a society that has a white woman's back most of the time. It is hard to recognize your own privilege, and it feels discrediting when you have made your effort and others tell you that you probably had it easier than most people, and like Rory, we often miss that we had stuff handed to us at times, because there was a small struggle that we managed to see as something bigger than it really was. The way in which it hurts to see Rory is healthy, because it challenges us to look at ourselves and question if we have maybe acted that way or we threw a tantrum for not being handed things we up until that point have taken for granted. We really need to learn and heal from this and not just label everyone that makes us upset a narcissist. Rory is ignorant, not narcissistic. She is not lacking in empathy, she is just used to her emotions being more important to the world than the emotions of other people, and I love how we have this beautiful and smart woman, and see that beauty and intellect doesn't make perfect people. It can in some cases even make a nasty person.

Rory treated Dean like trash the first time they were together and that cycle didn't get any better. Yes, he was manipulative and borderline emotionally abusive, but she should've been honest with him about Jess from the beginning. But that set the pattern for her relationships with men and it never got better, and I think she DID pick it up from how her mom treated Max, Luke, even Chris as kind of disposable the minute things got hard. Neither of them were great at accepting responsibility, though Lorelei was obviously slightly more grounded than Rory. But I'll never forget Rory crying to Lane at the end of season seven when she's having trouble finding a job about the worry and pressures everyone, including the town, placed on her. It was an impossible standard for anyone to reach, really. But in the Revival, that Rory honestly pissed me off to no end. Showing up to that interview unprepared? Forgetting she had a boyfriend even when he WAS IN HER HOUSE? Whining about how much the industry changed? And as someone who works in journalism, I can vouch that it has definitely changed. I'm a video editor, but there's very few single position jobs anymore. They expect you to be multi media journalists to cut costs because everything's digital. The show didn't really do a good job of showing just how much journalism changed, imo. It hinted at it, but only vaguely. And talked down so much about digital journalism when it was kind of at its height, which would've been a big reason why she probably wasn't getting hired if that was her attitude going into interviews. Sorry for the rant, the show hits a little close to home lol. But even in the end, she still had a career and a huge mansion handed to her on a silver platter, so what was the over all journey? And to find out that this was how the show was always supposed to end was extremely disappointing, to say the least.

Oh never apologize about a GG rant, we are in the same boat here! I felt the same way about Revival Rory. @@chaoticlizsama The fact that even ten years later, she still was having opportunities handed to her off of "one piece in the NYT" was hilarious tbh. That was probably the most unrealistic part, along with her lifestyle in general given how expensive NYC was. They didn't even talk about how she afforded to live there, but one could guess she was living off the trust fund from Gran which she definitely would've blown through. I know "its a show, don't take it too seriously," but then millennial get compared to her all the time and its seriously one of the most annoying things. I think when Rory was with Jess has become one of my favorite parts of the show. Obviously neither of them is perfect, far from it, but they call each other out on it and Jess continues on from the relationship better off. He put good effort into their relationship but just didn’t put the same into his own life at that time, ultimately leading to him going away. When Rory was with Dean, he’s very much more into the relationship than her because her eyes are on Jess. Most of the time that she’s with Logan, in my opinion, she definitely puts more effort into the relationship maybe to compensate for Logan giving up his normal ways for her. But with Jess, I think they both are putting in equal effort, not 100% of their lives, just equal. Maybe I just hold Jess on a pedestal but like come on, he ends up being one of the best in the show by the time he comes back to visit Rory to show off his book.

There will be a lot of varied opinions on this, but I think what's brilliant about the show is that this is an intentional trick. Assuming we take AYITL to be similar to how ASP wanted the show to originally end, the show is a full circle in how we see Lorelai escaping her mother's expectations, and then we're in love with Rory, who we think will grow up and be perfect and do no wrong. The whole trajectory of the show is this perfect image of Rory slowly unraveling from her mother's and our high expectations with the ultimate punchline that her life is upended with an unplanned pregnancy at a pivotal point in her career (in ASP's version of season seven, when she's about to go to grad school). The show does want you to think Rory's perfect... only so that your expectations of her can be dashed so we feel as disappointed as Emily was in Lorelai. There's a lot of mirroring in how Rory buckles under Lorelai's often unspoken high expectations (which are probably more similar to Emily's than it appears) and is extremely unfaithful in relationships, reflecting the chaos of Lorelai's pregnancy out of wedlock. In truth Rory's so far from the well-behaved, hyper-capable career woman her mom (and we as the audience) see her as.

I somewhat disagree about the Dean and Roy interaction about the letter and everything that happened. I took it more as Dean was remorseful. He realized what a horrible thing he did, and what he lost all for somebody who basically wasn’t worth it and he was more pissed off that Rory doesn’t see it and that she’s not as remorseful or taking actions to try to fix anything with the people that they hurt I’d be pissed at Rory too. I’d be pissed at myself, though I’d never do such a thing, but were I in there shoes I would be angry at myself and angry at the other person who can’t seem to find the respect and empathy to 1 care about Lindsey’s feelings based off of what they both did and 2 understand Dean’s feelings that he realized he did an absolute horrible thing.
@chaoticlizsama

That's a fair POV. I do think that Dean was starting to feel remorse about everything and definitely did not want to parade something around when he knows what that feels like. I feel like his reaction was multi-layered. He may have lost something but the manipulative actions he used on Rory to get there just make me feel less sympathy for him. I totally get your point though. Cause I'd also be pissed if I pissed away a marriage to be with someone who's so inconsiderate of others feelings. Not to mention how mad you must be at yourself in that moment. It was all over the place 😭
