Good question Aaron, Officially the area covered by the forest today is around 1000 acres, however that is mostly just the area around the Sherwood forest park at Edwinstowe, of which is mostly an area called the Dukeries. Land owed by the dukes was never developed or cleared and was much part of the original Royal hunting forest. The part that is now mostly the park is probably the most protected over the years because of the hunting forest, these areas was reserved for royal hunting only and if a commoner was caught hunting in these areas they were given very heavy and sometimes deadly penalties. This was policed by the Sheriff of Nottingham. King Johns palace was a Royal hunting lodge in the forest that used to house dignitaries and visiting upper classes from which they would use as a hunting base. Later the land became the property of the dukes, around Edwinstowe it was the Dukes of Portland and therefore it was kept as parkland, the original forest however stretched much further, and covered an area of around 100,000 acres, some of this is left but not connected to the Sherwood forest park, for example the area just south of Edwinstowe, Sherwood pines, covers many 100's of acres, so the honest answer is...... nobody really knows, almost every tree from Leicestershire to Yorkshire could be counted, in my opinion id say the area between Edwinstowe and Worksop is what is left of the hunting forest. Most of the original ancient woodland and the ancient oaks in other areas was cleared to build ships to fight the Spanish Armada but replaced with pine plantations. As for Robin, I think as an outlaw the notion of robbing the rich to feed the poor is likely to be false, he more than likely kept it for himself! and there would have been many more like him, outlawed for their crimes such as poaching from the Royal forest, hiding in the depths of the forest as wanted men. Some stories do not add up, for example it is said that Robin and his men used the hollow interior of the Major oak to hide in from the Sheriff of Nottingham, however is Robins day, it would have been a sapling. In the 12th century, most people were not literate and stories were often conveyed in songs usually sang by minstrels such as Alan-a-dale and became folklore, I believe what we see from the story of Robin and his men is a cumulation of these stories creating the legend, in the 15th century plays was composed of his adventures, however as with all folklore there is always an element of truth, I think Robin did exist, along with many other bands of outlaws exiled to the forest and would have more than likely prayed upon and robbed the wealthy folk travelling the Kings road through the forest.
