Thank you Mac for taking time out to show us the culture and history of Istanbul. It’s great seeing the food and shopping in vlogs but it’s really important to also show the culture of a country or city, it is a sign of respect so well done. The Hagia Sophia was a church then used as a mosque and it still looks like a church as the architecture is typical of churches built during that period. Great vlog 🙏👍❤️

Hagia Sophia is the oldest building of its type. An Orthodox Church with marvelous architecture and beauty. The city was captured in 1453 by Sultan Fatih Mehmet Han. As the city was not handed over to the Sultan, it is down to the new rulers discretion as to the purpose of the building. In this case it was converted to a Mosque and then later in the 1900 was changed to a museum and then recently reverted back to a Mosque. There is no corraversy. Hagia Sophia has returned back to a Mosque as the Sultan had decided many centuries ago.

Hi It was originally built in 360 AD and for more than a thousand years was a Christian church. It belonged to the Orthodox Catholics for the whole time, except for a 57 year period between 1204 and 1261 when it was a Roman Catholic cathedral. The mosque was to be built on the site of the palace of the Byzantine emperors, facing the Hagia Sophia (at that time it was most venerated mosque in Istanbul) and the hippodrome, a site of great symbolic significance. Large parts of the southern side of the mosque rest on the foundation and vaults of the Great Palace.

İstanbul (Constantinopole)was capital city of east Roman empire until it was conquered by Ottoman Empire(1453). Hagia Sofia converted into a mosque at that time. It was used as a mosque until 1935. 1935-2020 it was a museum. On 2020 it was opened for prayers. Today it serves in both ways. As a mosque & a museum. If you visit Italy Ravenna which was the capital of west Roman empire there is a Basilica called San Vitale which is a very small version of Hagia Sofia. Same architecture.

"Aghia Sophia " is the name of the building, originally built as a Christian orthodox church, by the emperor Justinianus. The official language during the byzantine empire was Greek. " Αγία Σοφία " is its original name, which is Greek and means: " Sainte Sophia ". The name " Sophia" means:" wisdom". The church was dedicated to the God's wisdom. After 1453, year of the fall of the byzantine empire by the Ottomans, the orthodox cathedral was converted into a mosque up to 1931 when the first president of the modern turkish country, Kemal Attaturk made it a museum. It should have never been re- converted into a mosque, though. The reasons are obvious. Love and greetings from Athens, Greece.😊

The Hagia Sophia was originally a church! In the great hall you can see white blankets in the roofarea that cover the faces of jesus, because muslims don't pray to people because Allah is greater. After the churcharea it became a mosque, and then it became a museum until 2 years ago. 50% of the people in Turkye are very traditional in their believe so it was a political move from Erdogan to change it back in a mosque.

@@mysteriousjz so why are turks lying about this church originally being a mosque?

@@freejay3 I don't know what you are referring to. But, you might be confused with their saying it was a mosque 1500 something to 1931, and converted to museum, and now mosque *again* meaning what they might be saying it was a mosque before meaning mosque before the museum status.

This church is a Byzantine church built by Justinian. All of turkey was part of ancient Greece and Istanbul which means into the city is a Greek word. It’s a shame the Turk islamized everything stole our churches converted them into mosques and killed the Christians. Very sad and disturbing.

How often do you go to any church and pray to Almighty? Presently, you should worry about Christians killing Christians in the war near you which is cruising towards you next
