A few weeks ago, me and a couple of friends set out with the aim of exploring somewhere new, and hopefully finding some new wildlife spots for photography.
On our dream species list was beaver, pine marten and boar. After day one, we found ourselves pursuing a wildlife encounter with one of those species in particular.

Where you were filming is riddled with damage caused by the boar foraging for food. It's incredible how the damage has increased over the last few years, the locals are fed up with them damaging their gardens/bins etc. I haven't been there for a year or so, I moved slightly further away and just haven't made the effort. A few years ago a Saturday morning alarm would have seen me rising from my bed at 04:30, and being sat by those ponds ( Cannop Ponds ) by 06:00 watching the Mandarin duck etc going about their business ( the River Wye close by is good for Mandarin duck too ). If you go to a quiet part of the forest and sit for a while, you may hear them 'snuffeling' as they search for food, it's a dead give away of their presence, perhaps another visit to another part will yield you success. Good luck, enjoyed the video. 👍

No disk full of boar images but the one you got is a definite 'keeper.' Stunning shot! You asked in a recent video why your viewers watch your videos -- this one is for me the perfect example. As a wildlife photographer I simply enjoy watching you and your mates going about taking photographs; the 'hunt' for the wildlife, traipsing about natural areas, being the real reward even if the number of days without a good shot outweigh those with. Maybe simpler to say I see in your videos the truth that it's the journey not the destination that counts.

Great to see a video from you again! Hope it isn't to long till the next one.:) Coexisting with wildlife that pose some kind of threat or challenge to peoples comfortable way of life seems difficult for us Norwegians too. Especially wolves are persecuted beyond any other animal. Using fear and miss information. I live up in the arctic and we have a small amount of people living here, and enormous wilderness areas with very few predators. Because they would feed on reindeer that people own, or moose that hunters would like to hunt for themselves.

Hi Magnus! Next one will be Saturday :). And hopefully the Saturday after that as well, if all go's to plan. Thats actually really interesting to hear that from a Norwegian! @@MattGouldphotography Great to hear! Keep it coming, its always a threat with good bird and wildlife photography videos as there is so much good landscape videos out there. How the Norwegian government presents itself outwardly regarding wildlife conservation and what is really going on is, I'm afraid not very transparent. Hi John, sorry you are going through similar frustrations. I did manage a few more glimpses but they were sprinting past and very on edge. My advice (... as someone not in a position to advise as they too have failed so far) would be to go in the spring and go for an early morning silent walk. That time of year they seem to be much more accepting of people and they seemed to be more active in the morning. Though that is just my limited experience in the area.

So sad to think of these creatures being culled. I understand that many of the larger mammals have effects that can prove problematic for people in the countryside (I love Badgers but i'm from a farming background so understand concerns over TB-don't advocate culling though) but as you say we have lost so much, let's try not to kill off what we are lucky enough to have left. Loved the Santa therapist joke by the way Ha Ha!
@MattGouldphotography
@MattGouldphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Elaine!!! So good to see you back! Badgers are another example of my point, jumping to eradication without proper consideration of other methods of controlling the issue (TB). I beleive there is evidence to show that in some cases culling them can cause TB to spread, because if you kill at random you may well be killing healthy populations and so leave room for an un-healthy one to move in. And I will let Ben know his joke went down well. Thanks for stopping by :)

Great vlog Matt, I must say I enjoy your vlogs but I do prefer the parts when you are on your own and we see the natural you, I agree also with the view you have with co-existing with all animals but a proper balanced environment means if boar are rerelease their predators should be released also and living in a world like we do isn’t sustainable, it would be great to see wolves and bear roaming our country again but there is to many of us humans to destroy it again, great vlog, I’d love to see more of your ventures soon,
@MattGouldphotography
@MattGouldphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I will be releasing more solo efforts in the furture but the recent few months and next couple of videos have just leant themselves to group ones. It will always be a bit of both. And yes I completely agree, sometimes when there are no other options, culling is a necessary evil. Seeing as we have eliminated the apex predators in this ecosytem and many others already and so we need to take their place. My point was more at the fact that people seemed to treat animals like the boar as marmite, they love them or hate them. Personally I would like to see a world where we accept that we could/should be living alongside animals like this. Maybe I worded myself poorly. Lesson learnt I suppose :). Thanks for your honest feedback and thoughts. There should be more videos, once a week for the next two weeks at least :).

I recently read an article about the wild Boar in the Forest of Dean being illegally hunted by people using dogs which I found quite distressing. You really have to sometimes question humanity when you hear stories like that & I can’t help but feel as a race we are failing especially when you hear the ridiculously lenient sentences these individuals were given.
@MattGouldphotography
@MattGouldphotography 4 жыл бұрын

It was an article published on the BBC webpage about a man from somewhere in Wales who regularly drove up to The Forest of Dean with his dogs & hunted the Wild Boar amongst other animals like Deer, Badgers & Foxes. When they finally caught him the found thousands of images & hundreds of hours of video footage of him in several different locations including TFOD committing some absolutely obscene acts of animal cruelty like throwing fox cubs to his dogs, digging out badger sets pulling out the adults claws & letting his dogs rip the badgers apart, videoing his dogs take up to 20 minutes to actually kill quite a few Wild Boar & take images & video of barely alive animals screaming in pain whilst he did a selfie with the animal in the background. This guy was a totally sick a55hole!… I know this is a wildlife photography channel & I don’t want to stray the comments away from that subject, but my belief is that people like this can’t be cured & it’s been proven that people who enjoy torturing & enjoy seeing animals suffer move on to bigger crimes. The current punishments are nowhere near harsh enough & I think for the crimes this particular individual committed think he should have got 10 years.

In Hong Kong they will literally come and steal food from people in the middle of the street lol. Anyway, good luck and absolutely agree with what you said in the end, especially from a wildlife researcher point of view...

Put lynx in the forest of Dean and then we wouldn't need to cull boar.

Hiya Ise, an interesting suggestion for sure. I have no doubt it will work brilliantly in Scotland. I am no expert but I think Wales may hold more challenges, much higher habitat fragmentation and a much higher risk for conflict with humans due to population and sheep that will wonder into the woodlands in places. I hope I am wrong though and that they find a way to make it work. It would be brilliant to see them back :).

@@MattGouldphotography if other countries have to live with lions, elephants (two species the uk's mod help protect), lynx, wolves, bears (such as our European neighbours) then Wales and the UK in general can handle a few lynx too. If you ask the right people they'll tell you there's already big cats roaming the countryside as it is 😂

I agree that people should find a way to coexist with wildlife as is the conclusion on this video in a way. Though the examples you give I feel are different in the respects of people having always lived with animals like (meaning they grew up learning how to) and they have a substantially larger amount of space available meaning conflicts are far less likely. I believe, given the case of wolves for example, there is only room for one pack just in Scotland making that option impossible. I think space limiting population size may also be a factor for lynx in Wales, though I could be wrong 🙂. I'm not saying the lynx wouldn't work. I'm saying i'd need to see the differences between Wales and Scotland as potential reintroduction sites, before stating my unprofessional opinion. And other than the Scottish wildcat I think I would also need evidence that isn't shaky footage or personal anecdotes before I subscribe to the big cats in the English countryside theory. But science can always say it's wrong so the day that happens I will of course say I was wrong. 🙂 Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts on this channel, always open for constructive conversation about conservation 🙂👍

Rewilding is of paramount importance and a priority over most other 'inconveniences'. Sure, the argument to make things work we must work together has held fort as the logical ideology for sustainable and successful reintroductions but vested interests and filthy lucre always rear their ugly heads. So, without sounding like an extinction rebellion model of a rewilding advocate (which is exactly how I'm going to sound) the only way to do this - especially with apex predators (which we desperately need), is hard and fast laws giving solid species protection and a budget to offer advisories for those who feel are, somehow, suffering at the hands of enriching and returning our ecology to where it was for millennia. The only significance humanity now has is the the way it's wholesale ignored what was actually significant from the start - other life. Time to turn the tables.
