Many of you have seen the movie 'The Last Emperor' which tells the story of the last emperor of Qing Dynasty who then went on to be ruler of Manchukuo - the puppet state under Japanese rule. Imperial Japan had chosen to set up shop in what is now the city of Changchun located in the heart of Manchuria, and the capital of present day Jilin Province. Japan created the capital of Machukuo and called it 新京 (Shinkyō in Japanese and Xīnjīng in Mandarin). They designed and built this city which served as their capital for ten years (from 1935 until their hasty departure in 1945).
In this video, I'll take you too see the remnants of colonial Japan. You can see what Japan built and how those buildings look today. You might be surprised by what you're about to see in this video. Making this video was truly an unforgettable experience and I hope you will all enjoy it.

Cool vid. Have you ever visited Jingyuan in Tianjin (Puyi's former residence)? It's not huge, but worth a visit if you're in Tianjin. *Tip - Although they have signs that say no photos, every time i visited I politely asked the staff about it, and each time they said it wasn't a problem.

Haven't been there yet, but I've been to his former place of residence in Changchun. If I'm down that way sometime I might drop in and check it out!

Nicely done documentary. All the references to “Puppet” government are kind of funny. What does that even mean?

Means the appointed Chinese officials had their strings pulled by the Japanese puppeteer a la the “Last Emperor.”

Question: why are the tree trunks painted white? I've noticed this in just about every KZfaq video from China.

Thanks Matt! I really appreciate that! And yes, it's hard - especially in the beginning. Just starting from square one and trying to get your ears accustomed to hearing and making sense of the sounds as well. But if you stick with it and get through those early stages it starts to get a lot easier. Luckily Chinese grammar is generally quite simple.

I still remember reading about a sad historical event in Chang Chun when I was a Child. emperor Puyi had no one follow his order, everything he did had to be permitted by the Japanese. When he finally got enough trust from the Japanese, He was allowed to have his personal security guard. an army of 80 men from Manchurian and Mongolian elite families. Until one day some of his personal guards got drunk and got into a fight with Japanese soldiers in Da Tong Park大同公园. The emperor's warriors proved their metal. They won the fight. But the Japanese disbanded the guard shortly after the instant. That was the end of the last army of the Qing Empire. If you are in Chang Chun, maybe you could go see that place. I've never been there myself.

I find that fascinating thank you. I have read the 160 page Lytton Commission Report presented to the League of Nations in 1932/3 which detailed the unconventional if not inhumane or illegal activities of the occupier. I must join the dots sometime.

I lived there for many years and have many beautiful memories of that city. The food, the people, Guilinlu, Nanyang area, the fish market, Puyi palace, renmin square, , hanging out a Nanhu park. Slipping on the ice in Ziyou avenue. My ex wife's grandpa was about 10 years old or so back when Japan used to rule China from this city. He told me he didn't remember much, only that the city was very orderly before the CCP took over. Though I always wanted to get more information from him, he always emphasized that word. Orderly. Changchun was only a railway crossing of the Beijing Line and the Transsiberian Line. It was integrally designed by Japan and many of their buildings still stand today. Many more than the eye can see, some of them hidden between the high buildings raised in the last 30 years or so. All the buildings you mentioned, I've seen them myself. There's a not-so-small neighborhood south from Culture Square that when you walk in it, it makes you feel like you're in Japan. And I've been to that Commercial bank of China more times than I could count. Man the memories I have of that place, a city not famous among Chinese that has a huge history of its own. Thank you for the fantastic video. A correction, though: Qinghai square in Dalian is much larger than Tiananmen, let alone culture square.

from the many photos, try to find out the map of the Dixie Mission before and after Japan colonized China at that time... maybe that's why Taiwanese and mainland Chinese people have different views on Japanese people...

I think some Chinese would certainly find this interesting. Not necessarily in a positive way, but more from a historical perspective. I was very sensitive to the Chinese perspective in this video, taking their sensitivities to this harsh chapter of history into consideration.
