You asked, and here it is! Exploring the backstreets of Tokyo! So much attention goes to the major areas. Its time to explore something a little less "main!" This may need to be a series... lol. What else would you like to see from the Tokyo backstreets? Leave it below!

This is definitely just a first part. Anything could be interesting like random street art, sculptures, bonsai and other plant art/arrangement, backstreet plumbing and piping, weird concrete layout/design, street lamps/lights, historical walls and modern wall design, roofs, signs, etc.

Hmm here’s an interesting concept. Asking elderly Japanese people where they recommend tourist go. Like I’m sure if they had lived in Tokyo since they were little they might know of some spots that used to be busy but are now hidden gems like the things you’ve showed us in their video? 🤔

I always love seeing smaller, older buildings surrounded by tall, new buildings. And it's kind of cool in the few instances where new growth doesn't totally kill out the more established businesses, but kind of feeds into them instead.

In Kuramae Sanchome, right next to the A4 exit of Kuramae station, I just discovered an ancient bookshop housed in a 2-storey building that looks like it has never been upgraded since it was built god knows when. I'm pretty sure the whole building slightly tilted, is basically a disaster waiting to happen and I love it!

Stayed in Kyodo twice. Never saw another Westerner in all my time there. Visiting all the main shopping streets and exploring all the little back streets. I remember visiting this little food shop in Kyodo run by an elderly couple. I thought I would have been refused entry, but they were the most welcoming people ever, even going so far as to try to explain how the ticket vending machine works (despite any of us not speaking the other's language) That was my first year there. The second year the shop was no longer there. I always hope that nothing bad happened to either of them 😥

4:57 that image of the busy city with the sky tree set to the backdrop is burned in my mind. Very great print material from the correct angle, I'd say. Thanks for that tour of the shrines!! I definitely need to begin planning a trip there someday. Just have no idea how I'd get around, but that's half the fun!

This is such a great video Norm. ❤️❤️ I create a lot of artwork about old/abandoned buildings and backstreets and honestly some of my favourite places to explore and draw are backstreets and service/maintenance areas. I'm sure I'm a terrible person to travel with because I want to go off and explore hidden away places for hours 😂 I love that you've shown the interesting compositions of smaller buildings contrasting the larger tourist areas in Tokyo too, it's so visually interesting.

I swear out of all the Japan KZfaqrs your content is on a whole different level. It's just so... immersive. Like I'm there. Like I've seen parts of Japan even some locals might not have. Maybe it's because I grew up in Hong Kong doing what you're doing in this video (same goes for a lot of the other stuff you've done), maybe it's because I understand truly experiencing a place is in the details and not just what's on must-see lists curated for tourists. Whatever the reason, I love your channel and am happy I'm here on the journey. I look forward to seeing you cross that 1 million subscriber mark soon and then go even further

These are great fun, I spent a good part of my time weaving through these. A lot changed at night also, suddenly a little 5 seat restaurant or bar appeared on what looked like a small through-route during the day. It is also a chance to see Tokyo going about it's daily routine without needing to keep the tourists entertained.

I’m torn and love both actually. The touristy spots are all fun and everything and made to have wide appeal, but seeing this contrast of the back streets is so interesting. It may not be as ‘fun’ as a tourist-centric spot, but it’s so authentic and you can see and experience so many different things in backstreets.

going around on random streets to get lost a bot and find new things you might not otherwise see is something I would do as a kid by bike. You also advocated this a lot on may other videos, so I of course did just that (not so much when my foot was injured) The first day I got up at 4am and walked to the Sugo shrine where they have the staircase featured in the movie Your Name. It was there I did a good amount of side street adventuring. I would also do it while walking to places far away, and just let the phone GPS reroute, so to avoid the main areas and see more local type things. It was relaxing. I did it Kyoto too, but that is when the foot injury happened... did not stop me though. I am dying to return, and do it again.

omg the senbei shop was ADORABLE. They had little cute candies - it was so nostalgic, but it wasn't even something I experienced. I wonder how long that store has been there and how many kids and families went to enjoy the goods from there. I enjoyed this video because I always felt like I should see all the highlights of Tokyo first, but I found myself enjoying cruising down the alleys and finding little mom and pop shops and GEMS. It's so much more memorable than a hashed out itinerary with "must see" places vetted by thousands of other people

I sure as hell hope this is a part of a series because this is NEAT. Everyone and their cousin and every tourist bureau talks about Meiji Shrine, but cool neat individual buildings, backstreets, or weird local oddities that likely a local would appreciate are more rare. It's kind of like restaurants; I couldn't tell you about a Michelin star restaurant in my city but I could point to you a neat weekday hangout or restaurant or two.

You’re the best backstreet boy yet, Norm! Great video. Are there restaurants or other business in the really narrow backstreets? Or are those purely residential? Where do people park their cars?
@TokyoLens
@TokyoLens 5 жыл бұрын
Lol 90%+ of people in this area won’t own cars (mostly because you don’t need it~) Those who do own cars will park it in their tiny garage if they have one, or rent an off-site parking space! But parking in the main areas of Tokyo is quite expensive Ok the Ueno/Asakusa area, it can cost easily $300-450 per month just for a single, outdoor parking space! And there are a few restaurants in them! I did a video called something like “rewinding a Day in japan” when my brother came to visit and I showed a backstreet that had some restaurants in it!

The little side alleys and backstreets are my favorite parts to see of Tokyo or even any part of Japan, even in the country side. I really love the the mix of old world Japan and the industrial look of the buildings and how everything isn’t so “cookie-cutter.” Homes are lived in, every inch of space is used. Ahhh it’s the best. Yay for electroswing! :) I love the quiet and older parts of Tokyo, most of my time I spend there than in the "fancier" parts and I almost always try to avoid the "tourist'y" parts. BusanKevin(jlandkev/just japan), well Kevin had lots of awesome videos like this and I love all of them. If I can request a place for you to explore, well that just have to be Chitose-karasuyama in Adachiku, Keio line. Why, well that is one of my old places I've lived at. It is what I would say a "normal" living area/station in Tokyo but I love it. Nice place to explore. Also to lure you a bit more, they have an awesome coffee roaster where you can get some really good coffee.

I'm a big fan of the footage you show of back streets, so I'm really happy you dedicated a video to it! I'm planning on moving to Japan 1 year from now and exploring Tokyo alleys, looking for hidden shrines, etc. is something I'm really looking forward to. Also! You showed that neat spot where the old architecture contrasts with the new and I have to say, I love the unique architecture you can find in Tokyo. Lots of buildings from various eras and in all shapes and sizes, all mixed up together.

Great Video, interesting to see the back streets away from all of the noise, you always share the really interesting things about Tokyo.

The music in this video is so much fun. It feels like one of the seeds for Tokyo Lens Explores. Rather fun and exciting to see an origin story. Neat!

backstreets of tokyo stand for me as old buildings from old times, it's nice to see how japan was in those times.

Just finished watching the video, so many places I recognise. I've been in Tokyo four times so far and Ueno/Taito backstreet are my favourites places to see. Please do more videos like this.

Norm! I was just thinking about these small little alleyways and there you are with your video! Thank you, this made my morning alot better! Oh, and the electroswing worked like a charm on this video. Added a bit of steampunkish feeling to the place.

Hey norm! It's been awhile since I've commented but just wanted to say hi. Going through a really rough patch so trying to destress by catching on KZfaq videos I've missed. Love this video, when I eventually move to Japan I want to wander and just get lost amongst random streets and backstreets.

@@TokyoLens thank you:) the videos are helping a little bit and that's enough for right now. Things are going to be pretty rough the next couple weeks but I hope to be back on my feet in a good situation by the end of the year.

Interesting video as always! Something outstanding besides the usual tourist spots videos you find everywhere. I also liked the music you used. Really lightens up the mood. I guess I would be a bit to shy to go though the real narrow streets by myself but those backstreet area looks quite interesting. I would be interested in a series of videos like these. Just you walking around, showing random streets and what to find there while talking and explaining like in this one. Also I really like temples and shrines, so a video of just small little ones you don't find in every tourist guide would be awesome! Can't wait to be in Tokyo next week and see some of the things you showed us in your videos with my own eyes and camera ;)

I loved that there was a couple of back streets that ran parallel to the apartment building that I stayed in back in Aug, also the little shrines that I found in them were so cool.

Love the backstreets, every time I go to Tokyo I like to just wander around. Can you check out the area between Suidobashi station over to lidabashi station. Also to check out the remains of the north gates of the great Edo palace. This is the old outer most most leading into the samurai district before continuing further south to imperial palace. Nearest intersection is Waseda dori and the Canal.

Working my way through all your videos :) from your current one to Tokyo Drift but I really liked this one. I like all the little back streets, its really something I'd want to do if I ever get a chance to go to Japan. Sort of an Urban exploring. The music in this was fantastic too. Love all your videos so far. Keep up the great work!

I know this video is a bit old but this reminded me of when I got terribly terribly lost in harajuku and ended up walking around a bunch of back streets. It was both terribly stressful but also relaxing 😆
