This video shows how to remove the headliner and headliner shelf in our 2021 Ford Transit DIY Campervan. We needed to remove the headliner and headliner shelf so we could access the metal behind the headliner to add insulation and sound deadening.

For future enthousiasts: leave the visors fitted and put them to the side windows, that way you can let the shelf rest on the visors while removing the last screws. The outer two nasty blinding caps can be pushed out from above if you remove all bolts except for the 4 behind the caps. The inner 2 are best popped out by carefully putting a utility knife in the small gap and levering a bit, enough to put a small scewdriver behind it.

Thanks a ton for posting this! Helped me a lot. I found a way to easily get those clips out - bend the headliner down and take a flat head and push in the clips. They pop off no problem. Hope helps someone and any future builds you do!

Thanks for posting the video. I just did this yesterday. This is the kind of job you would do in half the time the second time around. So glad I did it though. There is a lot of roof over that headliner for sound deadener and insulation. Every bit of insulation helps for a 4 season build. I removed those 4 front plugs from the inside with a very long screw driver. You just reach in over the shelf, push on one of the hooked areas of the plug and it comes right out.

Hey guys! Great video. Just found another way to undo the 4 clips that took you 45 mins. You have to pry the shelf down a bit and accès the clip from the top. Just push the clips with a screwdriver and it’ll pop right out!! Took me 10 seconds each and the are not damaged at all.

Thank you both so much for this video! I finally got my transit from the factory and tackled this project today. I initially didn't want to remove the headliner and shelf because it looked very daunting to do by yourself, but I accidentally dropped one of the tree clips behind it 😅. This video was super helpful and I was able to do it in about 30 minutes all by myself! Tip: I used a box cutter blade to help pop off the covers for the four bolts. It only took me 2 minutes to get all of them off. Thanks again!

A year ago, we were finishing doing our 2018 Ford Transit 250 MR van conversion. We did serious sound deadening and insulating everywhere, except above our heads in the cabin area. We just did not want to take apart all that you did and our result was just fine. It certainly cannot hurt to do hat you are doing, but with the super coverage of Kilmat and insulation elsewhere, we have a super quiet ride now and we are happy with our warmth in cooler weather. We are not cold-weather campers, so it is less of an issue for us. Nicely detailed video. I describe our KZfaq van conversion series as excruciating detail! : ) Be safe out there!

Nice! Glad that worked out well for you. We travel for snow skiing (temps as low as -40) and having a 4-season capable camper was highly requested in our 'requests' video, so we are happy to take the time to insulate behind the headliner.

Just a tip! Ford has gone metric so all the fasteners on the Transit are metric (as far as I know). You will need a 7mm and a 8mm to get the factory overhead shelf down. The front screw on the side of the overhead shelf is 7mm and the rear longer screw is 8mm. The Torx screws that hold the visor up are T25. Be careful when you are putting the headliner back in to get the headliner tucked in behind the pod under the rearview mirror and behind the A-pillar trim. Also, you will have to adjust the rubber gasket at the top of the door to fit nicely around the headliner. Also, the four plastic covers that are such a pain to get out are not all the same. Looking forward to your next video. Take care!

One other thing I forgot to mention guys. Those clips you pull off the expose the screw for removal of the sun visors; don't be surprised when that very small tab breaks and you have to figure out a way to hold those back into position during re-installation. I wound up using VHB tape. : /

I believe all Transit bolts are metric. For example on the headliner shelf the front 2 are 7mm and the back 2 are 8mm. For those 4 round plastic screw covers, with a long thin narrow flathead you can pop them down from above to avoid damage to the visible side.
@slemnatious

I would tend to agree. Just started working on our new transit and everything seems to be metric. Though I never touched the headliner.
@turnpike420

@@slemnatious Transit history is 40+ years in Europe, I think having first come to the US market in 2015? Very likely (almost certainly) all the engineering was done with metric in mind, therefore the bolts are almost certainly metric. No need to retool anything just for selling it in the US now.

There a few videos of this out there on KZfaq also, great job of your videos, Waiting for delivery of my 2022 250 HR but ford has many delays right now. Ordered it in November 2021. I love your content and its very educational. I'm looking at converting my 1977 F250 with a 460 to a full EV and use my bed camper to be its power supply. The camper and truck was bought new in 1978 by the original owner but even after a great tune up, I'm getting 35-40L/100km or 7-8 mpg. I was going to pull the motor and install a new 5.0 but for the same money I could go with a with an electric motor but it will be an additional cost for batteries and panels. If gas prices stay the same, might be a good investment.

There are places, moot now, that tells you all about the repairs on the rig.. I always try to find the OEM factory manuals,... DVDs and downloads I have found are noting as good as OEM. Ask your Ford Dealer about it... there is a company that makes them for factories.

You could try guitar picks or spudgers from tool sets like an iFixit kit - they're plastic but tough, so they're strong enough to pry things apart but aren't going to marr the plastic parts. They're used to pry apart consumer electronics like phones.
