"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

Good to have these dialogues from different perspectives. I don’t like Peterson’s manner, but as a gay person, I agree that there is no more a “gay community” than there is a “heterosexual community”. Also, I have a nephew who is 10, has long hair, sometimes likes to wear gold sandals & dresses, sometimes wants to be called she. My sister, supports him without making a big deal about it. A “health professional” suggested to her that he take puberty blockers!! Puberty blockers could have lifelong consequences! We were shocked. He’s 10 & learning about the world & himself. He is not depressed or troubled. That’s not supportive of who he is, that’s just bonkers. It’s NOT transphobic to NOT encourage the gender dysphoria narrative. Actually, it’s quite wonderful to read how many people are very accepting & even supportive of adults who choose to transition…

@Al If you think puberty blockers or any other gender affirming care is done on a whim, you have no idea what the process is actually like. It almost always requires confirmation from 2 separate psychologists/psychiatrists that confirm that this is a persistent pattern of behavior. I don’t know why people feel the need to talk out of their ass when they don’t know the first thing about gender affirming care, but they do for some reason. You’re not protecting kids, and you have no idea wtf you’re talking about. Maybe Google APA and AAP guidelines real quick before you get all worked up and pretend like evil healthcare providers are “transing” kids to avoid being cancelled or some shit. It’s transphobic because it legit takes like a 5 second Google search, but your first instinct is “I know better than every pediatric and psychiatric society, the kids parents, and the kids healthcare providers”.

You can tell that Jordan has been used to dealing with unintelligent people. He has no idea how to react to simple basic, fact-based questions. His apparent need to launch into peripheral diatribes and a reliance on academic nuance and sophistry indicates how he really has embedded himself into the right v left battleground of American politics. He also has become very angry, aggressive and unlikeable. I don't know if this is organic or if it is a show he's putting on now that he's on the Daily Wire. It's also almost laughable that he keeps bringing up "big-Trans" as an argument.

@@jstevinik3261 I think you are mistaken. Peterson expressing exasperation and having strong feelings on a contentious issue is not being 'triggered'. Nor is refusing to simply accept the 'coercive' language of the left, as some put it (as an example, using people's preferred pronouns, thus implying that their delusion regarding their own gender has merit). Peterson answered Kyle's questions, went into depth on multiple issues, and was very much willing to examine the granular detail of what was being discussed, while refusing to take things at face value. He has also done more reading on this issue then Kyle, and has more experience given his genuine qualifications and work as a clinical psychologist and educator. Meanwhile, Kyle avoided the contentious topic of pushing gender reassignment onto children, because you will either be cancelled by the Left, or rightfully recognised as someone who smiles at the idea of putting children through puberty blockers, hormone therapies and surgeries, all of which have irreversible side effects, and often leave people with medical complications for the rest of their lives. Jordan was certainly more impatient then he has been previously, but after a certain amount of bu*****t, anyone would be. Jordan has repeatedly had this same tired conversation with misinformed, delusional people who do harm while thinking themselves good. And yet, he still spoke coherently, brought up pertinent examples and data, and went into granular detail on the issues discussed (some of which Kyle ran away from, as I pointed out). Jordan did not resort to the typical insults and shaming tactics seen by someone who is 'triggered' and lacking a solid argument. @ghani666
@ghani666 2 жыл бұрын
@@pascal8306 when something is monetized, like the medical industry, you can point to anything medical you don’t like and declare “See? There’s a profit motive which proves this is all a corrupt money-making scheme!” You can say that for cancer research (many do) you can say it about pharmaceuticals, you can say it about physical therapy, cognitive therapy, literally anything that makes a profit. It’s universal correlation which is an invalid foundation for causation so to answer your question: no, the fact that there’s money to be made from it is already a given because capitalism, it in no way proves that gender-affirming care is a scam. If we nationalized healthcare, that would go a long way towards solving that problem, but that’s a different conversation. Let’s instead examine the two terms you used to describe trans peoples existence: “social contagion” and “fashionable trend.” The word “contagion” is used exclusively to refer to bad things, so to frame trans acceptance as a “contagion” you would first have to demonstrate that being trans is a bad thing. Which, you can’t, because neither science nor ethical philosophy leads to that conclusion. As for a “fashionable trend” I think you’d probably be surprised to hear how terrified trans people are these days. It was literally safer to come out as trans 5-10 years ago because the Right-Wing propaganda machine hadn’t specifically targeted them yet, but with all the “groomer” shit being purposely peddled to the masses right now, trans people know they’re the ones on the chopping block. If anything, fewer trans people are coming out or transitioning because of the recent manufactured rage that’s been built up around this issue by ideologues. But in many ways, that’s why you’ve been taught to use phrases like “fashionable trend.” It’s supposed to prey on the same part of your brain that the word “contagion” does. It feeds into your emotional reflex that being trans is a bad thing, and acceptance of it means that it’s being made “fashionable” and “contagious” and that it will spread. You can’t *make* a person trans just like you can’t *make* a person gay. Trans acceptance leads to a rise in *reported* trans people because more trans ppl feel safe to openly present as such, not because their minds were twisted by some sort of social agenda. Transgenderism has existed since the dawn of humanity. If it’s a “trend” then it’s officially the longest-running trend in history because the way our society views gender as this hard binary is extremely recent in historical terms, and varies wildly by geography and culture. So no, JP’s point was dumb as fuck.

There are studies that show children do better as adults if we extend their education and 'ease' them into adulthood over a longer period of time, with 18 (in my culture's perspective) being a good average for gaining the 'age of majority'. Exposing children to certain materials (like sexual content, which is not the same as education about health and sexual safety) damages their development, which has also been demonstrated. Meanwhile, problematic elements of the trans and LGB community are putting inappropriate reading materials in some American schools, featuring pornographic content, which will damage children's development. There is 'Drag Queen Reading Hour', which is less about children's literacy and more about exposing them to 'diversity' by putting them in the presence of Drag Queens; who are essentially gay men that dress as women and perform as strippers. The children are being read to and exposed to sex workers. There is, in some areas, a thing called 'Baby Drag', with children as young as six 'expressing themselves' through emulating the work of gay men who work as strippers. These things are perfectly unhealthy, and should not be exposed to/done to children. Then there's the fact that the trans community is mistakenly treated as a monolith. Not all trans people are 'trans' for the same reasons. Here are some examples. There are children who are being groomed to be trans by their own parents, as seen on the (ironically) pro-trans documentary 'Transhood', which follows the lives of several 'trans' children. A trans child is like a vegan cat; we all know who is making the choices there. There are also 'trans' children who mistakenly identified as 'trans' because they have unaddressed internalised misogyny or homophobia. Many detransitioners turn out to be gay men who were misled into thinking they were trans, and now they have to live with body dysphoria and health problems for the rest of their lives. Then there are children who were molested in their childhood, and who mistakenly associate their gender with being molested. When they say 'I hate being a boy/girl' the activists around them latch on, convince themselves and the child that gender dysphoria is at play, and then they transition the kid. While I fully accept that there are genuinely transgender people out there, and that they should (in my view) have access to what they need to transition, we have to keep in mind and consider that: - There are unhealthy behaviours and grooming being directed towards children right now. - Transgender adults make up only 1.03% of the US population, but some US teachers have stated that up to 50% of their class identifies as transgender (especially among teenage girls, who are very impressionable, socially sensitive, and prone to conformity). This is not a normal or realistic level of people 'coming out of the closet'. - Transgender people often suffer from multiple overlapping mental health problems and illnesses, and so I and others do not trust their capacity to look after, educate or guide children in a way that genuinely benefits children. - No one is or should be obligated to 'accept' a transgender person's delusions about their gender. Straight men will not want to entertain the idea of dating a 'woman' who has a penis, or who previously had one, and that doesn't make them transphobic; that's an understandable preference. Similarly, women are not obliged to share women's sports (as well as change rooms and bathrooms) with men masquerading as women. So forgive me for my 'jab', but I hope you can now see it as a reference to a wider problem that most trans activists are entirely (and often wilfully) ignorant of.

I agree. I kind of understand the underlying point that Jordan is conserved about, which is that our society is sort of glorifying the LGBT community and sort of going overboard with it. That's been my only issue with all of this is that if it was left at just not teaching about it til middle school, and not allowing life altering procedures to occur until maybe 16 at the earliest, I'd be fine with it all, but you can't deny there's people that are kind fetishizing LGBT stuff and kind of overreaching because they want to take a hard strong stance against people who don't agree with them and their lifestyle. Again, for me it does back to, adults can do whatever they want, but when they start imposing things on kids or young adults, or suggesting it's okay to allow life altering procedures at ages where it's hard enough just trying to understand your own body and the mental and physical pain and awkwardness of going through puberty... That's where I draw my line. All things I moderation. I don't see Jordan's or Kyle's views great in their extremes. I land somewhere in the middle of the opposing points their making.

Yeah I’m in the process of watching now and while I do enjoy some of Peterson’s teachings particularly ones strictly related to psychology I can say I really don’t like where Peterson is going lately as it pertains to trans people, he’s always at least been critical but reasonably tolerant of them but now all of a sudden has a huge issue with transitioning itself ? I do question how sincere his beliefs actually are though and whether or not he’s just trying to capitalize on a more conservative audience at The DW. In any event whatever debates I may have about enforcing pronouns, children transitioning , or sports competitions in the end for me a grown adult should have the option to transition through surgery if they believe that is the correct choice for their pursuit of happiness, provided the surgeon is of course qualified and meets all safety requirements but that should go without saying. To me not defending someone having the choice to transition is where the line between having a different opinion or viewpoint and actually being transphobic is very clearly crossed.

So forgive me for my 'jab', but I hope you can now see it as a reference to a wider problem that most trans activists are entirely (and often willfully) ignorant of.

Allowing adults to do what they want does not mean that medical professionals should blindly follow the will of their patients. That's stupid. Suppose the patient is suffering from clinical depression and is suicidal, does the doctor give the patient chemicals to make the death quick and painless? No! The doctor seeks to resolve the mental illness and make the person better. To even start with treatment, there needs to be a reliable test for diagnosing the condition. There is no such test for scoring if someone is trans. Medical literature cannot define what is a man or woman outside of biological factors. If a test to determine someone's non-biological gender does not exist, how can any medical professional ethically engage in such surgery? Such surgery is therefore criminal.

I believe Jordan is afraid for the kids and that's why he is so angry. Not one child should suffer because of adults ignorance and Jordan sees a bigger picture. Adults can't do whatever they want in public, it's out responsability to care about every child. I think some people don't realise how their obsession over their sexuality (even straight) can effect teens and little kids. No one fucking cares who are you fucking and how do you perceive your body. Egoism in every one of us has made this world so hard to live in. If we cared more about the soul, trans adults would have better medical and psycological care, and people who operate on kids would go immediately to jail. Discipline and knowledge should be number one on deciding about our future, not feelings of individuals who are offended by someone being rational and scared about consequences of political liberal movement that is not about people and it's actually about money and control.

@@thomascardwell8117 funny, I've seen 74 that do and only one that didn't and it was completely debunked. But, if you only go to fascists for your news and never look for yourself you're bound to continue being one yourself. Burring your head in the sand while you spread the flames of division with the putrid wind that blows from your wide open crusty ass cheeks.

If you try to transition white to black, sure completely socially unacceptable. Other direction I suspect would be fine, or at least not offensive to white people, which is about the same thing.

How can JP argue that LGBT issues getting a spotlight on them in media and eventual social acceptance didn’t allow people to feel they could be honest with themselves and come out as trans or gay as the public became more comfortable with those identities? Barely anyone came out of the closet in the 30s. Nowadays tons of people do. Is there really just WAYYY more gay people now? Or are people just more comfortable to come out in a more tolerant society?

Because it's disproportionately affecting young children and females specifically. There are no 40 year old moms posting their gender transitions on tiktok. Globally speaking the trans movement is a white liberal middle class phenomenon. It targets those who are insecure and looking for an identity.

Peterson calls Kyle "Anti-Corporatist" then he goes on to criticize the industry that provides a service to helps transitioning people as a fast growing industry like a CORPORATION. Love how these Peterson, Shapiro, Crowder types love to contradict themselves in the same breath. Also to Peterson, You Mad Bro?

My issue with the medical system is that it profits off of peoples pain, suffering, and desperation. None of that is exclusive to being trans. Honestly, due to general transphobia and gatekeeping the trans community has to fight the system to get the care needed more often than not.

It’s basically the strategy they used during COVID where they accused leftists of simping for big phrama because they advocated for the vaccine. Never mind they fact these types are anti union, consistently tell poor people they don’t deserve health care, and simp for a billionaire man baby.
