Phil Hellmuth can't believe it. Fedor Holz is bewildered. There is $10 million at stake, two players are all in at the 2018 World Series of Poker Big One For One Drop, and the Ace of Hearts has been exposed by Rick Salomon. What on earth should Fedor do in this spot with pocket tens, and was the tournament director correct to put the exposed ace on the table? This hand is a rollercoaster! Let's break it down.
This originally aired on PokerGo. You can watch more 2018 WSOP Main Event coverage there: www.pokergo.com

I made a mistake, I calculated the equity based on not knowing one card is the Ah. It's actually way more likely to be aces than mentioned in the video.

I was watching this thinking that it's the other 3 aces or 4 kings. Also kept thinking Fedor may have thought the situation could be AK v AK v TT because he runs so pure. Doug, you are a much improved version of myself. I used to do some podcasting and it should be noted Jimmy Fricke & I called Phil Ivey's historic 7th WSOP bracelet win: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6yEoLaA17_Sdps.html but I just want to say that you do everything I tried to do in poker, but so much better. Seriously, bravo. Slow clap. Your output is amazing, I'm a huge fan.

It's an obvious angle shoot by Salomon. It's never a mistake. Nobody, ever, holds a card up like that unless they deliberately want to show an opponent (in this case, Holz). Salomon is doing it to get Holz out of the pot so he can be heads up against the short stack.

Doug, the rule (that you read) clearly states a penalty will begin at the end of the hand, such as sitting out the next orbit or something like that. If Salomon had survived that hand, he would've been penalized. He didn't survive the hand and went bust, thus there was no opportunity to penalize him. Not sure what the tangent about penalties being the same in million dollar buyins was all about?
@Peterlulu5
@Peterlulu5 5 жыл бұрын
I think the tangent (though we obviously don't know) was based off the fact that I don't think Solomon would've gotten a penalty after the hand. It's been shown before that rulings aren't the same for certain people, so I can see why Doug would say it wouldn't be the same for certain tournaments.

Nolan Olson: 10 10 is actually the favourite to win. Even though it's called a coin flip pocket pairs are slightly ahead over pairs. There is also one Ace in the first players hand meaning AK has 5 outs (AAKKK) to win instead of the usual 6 outs.

Crazy video! Thanks for the great content once again, Doug. I think it's worth mentioning that part of the gamesmanship/angle of exposed card scenarios is falsely accusing a player of exposing their card to prompt them to deny they have that card, revealing information.
@WizzRacing
@WizzRacing 2 жыл бұрын
You have to deny they have that card... As you can lie about anything. As long as it's not the hand your holding. If you do. You get a 15 hands rail penalty. If they so choose to enforce the maximum hands you can't play....
@nuklearwinter2892
@nuklearwinter2892 5 жыл бұрын
Bad ruling, exposing the card is unnecessary here since only Fedor has a decision. If he didn't see it, then there is no reason to show the card to him regardless of whether or not anyone else saw it. The rule as written seems to imply the card should be exposed to allow all players in the hand to get the same information. However, when only one player has only one decision, the card shouldn't be automatically exposed if they did not see the accidentally exposed card.
@teckelred
@teckelred 5 жыл бұрын
It could be argued that the previous players' folds were induced by the flashed card, so those players had access to the information and Fedor should have the same right.
@nuklearwinter2892
@nuklearwinter2892 5 жыл бұрын
teckelred that’s exactly what I’m saying. In your case multiple people have a decision to make after a card was exposed, and I agree the card needs to be turned face up. However, in the hand as I saw it, only Fedor had a single decision to close the action.
@gsam3461
@gsam3461 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, but I made my comment assuming we all understood that everyone else had folded prior to him exposing that card in the SINGLE MOST OBVIOUSLY ANGLING OR COLLUDING FASHION IN THE HISTORY OF POKER. Sorry, had to make clear how ludicrous it was that he did that with that card. But I digress.... So assuming the others had already folded, it's back to my original point- there is zero reason why Fedor should be permitted to see that card prior to taking action. After the hand? Well that point is moot in this instance since Solomon is already all in so we're gonna see it anyway. To be clear, the rule you quoted obbbviously only pertains to a situation where this is multiple action left orrr if anyone took action due to the exposed card. If neither of those are true, there is NO WAY the remaining player should see that card before making his decision. Because, by that logic, if Solomon goes all in after everyone else has folded, and the player next to him happpens to see the card, does anyone on earth believe that card should now be face up?? That question, of course, is rhetorical and hopefully makes my point.

Great video, but it would have been nice if you also went into depth about what Fedor should do in this spot if the card wasn't exposed and discuss whether or not seeing the Ah increases or decreases his likelihood to call. Seeing Ah should make a call better because you get to eliminate JJ, QQ, KK from his jam range which all had you crushed.

I think that ace was deliberately shown. He was trying to make everyone fold and buy the pot. That call on Kaverman's all-in, rather than a return shove, opened the door for Salomon to try and steal the pot. And AK suited is a friggin good hand to do it with.

I agree that rules shouldn't be arbitrarily enforced based on the high profile of a player or the tournament. But what penalty do you suggest Salomon deserves here? Wasn't he penalized enough by busting out of the tournament on the hand and providing valuable information to his opponent that helped make that happen? Maybe there would have been a sanction had he survived the hand. No other way to penalize him before it plays out, right?

Josh Nagel Given that it influenced one of the most pivotal decisions of the entire tournament, he should have received a one orbit penalty (had he survived the hand).

I do think so, because he is a known sleazeball, but most high level players know that trick is mostly used when guys don't have a made hand, ie: you would never do it with pocket Aces. Still is a tough call with 10s for basically all the marbles

Even though Fedor got his $ in with the best of it, I felt like he got extremely lucky to hit a river that won him this hand. Like Doug said, there is just too much money in this tournament to make a move like this. With 5 cards to come, it's a lot to ask for 10's to hold up against 2 opponents. I would not have called there, personally.

Rick said "ace of hearts, yeah" when Jack said that he exposed a card. If he had aces he might not know the exact suit of the exposed card. Also, if he exposed the King of hearts, I think it's more likely to think that he has Kings and Fedor would fold.
@sportagus3
@sportagus3 5 жыл бұрын
It's the same decision no matter what card got exposed. He called with the possibility of being against pocket aces, no reason he wouldn't call against pocket kings since it's virtually the same hand against tens.

Really well mentioned. I was looking for this comment. In such situations you need to look for psychological and non-verbal tells that give away your opponents hand instead of just guessing whether it is AA or AK. Also the possibility that Kaverman might go all in with Ax makes Fedor pretty comfortable calling with TT.

Actually, there is a differnece which card was exposed. In case of ace exposed, even if we are giving obly AK, AA range, forgetting of AQ and some trash, there is 4 kings to AK and 3 aces to AA. But dont forget about Kaverman he went all-in, so he is likely to have one more ace himself. This being said, its about 2.5 aces left for Solomon. If king was exposed, we still have 3 cards to overpair and about 3.5 aces effectively to AK. I'm not sure about numbers, but it's a better call in first case.

Hey Doug! I was interested in signing up for your poker lab on upswing poker. I notice that a lot of it seemed like it was more particular to online play. Since I'm living in Texas I can't really play online for much more than play money. My question is, would signing up for the upswing poker lab be beneficial to me being a mostly live game player? Or would the lessons provided be applicable to both live and online? Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm fairly new to this and still trying to understand everything I can about the basics and where they all apply.
