Brava! Yes, you and Pete, and most local Italians took the high road. As a resident, at first many expats came to me trying to gather my thoughts on the terrible events taking place. Later I received criticism for “putting myself in the middle” of the controversy. I staunchly defended you and Pete. When queried, I didn’t hesitate to respond with my personal knowledge of facts. Unfortunately I have a front row seat to all this nasty behavior. I completely cut some people off from any communication. It was a solution for me. Very recently one tried to make a scene at a popular local restaurant because I told my hosts I was not willing to join that table. There is no reason to break bread with someone who has engaged in a smearing campaign. Never again. In my opinion, he demonstrated his vicious behavior by jumping out of his seat and loudly calling me out. Calmer heads prevailed, and I enjoyed the fabulous company of my hosts. I’m glad to say, as you noted; much of this behavior is being eliminated. I just want my beautiful, peaceful village back. I see that occurring. Santa Domenica Talao is a beautiful village with many wonderful people. As someone mentioned it takes a few bad apples to create gossip and discord. No more. Casa Christian is a beautiful B & B, and a lovely place for your guests to enjoy our village. Auguri. I apologize if I employed a negative tone. This statement is a comment on my personal experience at the height of the discord it has changed because of a strategy by a few powerless people who can only find satisfaction by attempting to denigrate people who look to add value to the community. I left the US to escape this negative mindset.

Brava. Most people don’t change but if you are strong they may leave to find another person to victimize. I don’t know the issues nor care to know but I’ll always stick with people who are out to do good for everyone, such as yourself. Keep strong. God bless.

Sad to hear this. Yeah, it deflated my fantasy a little. But, people will be people wherever you go. And unhappy people will spread unhappiness. Sometimes awareness needs to be brought to problems. There's a difference between a complainer and a transformer. If someone doesn't have a positive solution and helps to work towards it and just complains and spreads discontent, they're just sucking everyone else's energy. Paradise is where we make it. You seem to be working very hard at making the dream real. You're an inspiration!

Chris, all of this angst was caused by a foreigner(s) to SDT? What did the Italian locals think of all this? I imagine they're probably use to their own gossiping and drama, but I would think at some point they longed for the days before the foreigners arrived. It only takes a few people to sow distrust and animosity and undermine the positive actions of others all in pursuit of projecting their unhappiness and lack of joy. It’s unfortunate but helps others to reflect and be situationally aware regarding red flags when interacting. I have seen this in so many expat communities. I suspect people being who they are no matter where they go. Jill and I had a couple of nice visits to SDT and enjoyed our visit. We met people who mentioned you and always in a pleasant way. We purchased in Storico SNA and we are very very happy. All the best in your community building and restoration efforts.

My wife and I visited (SDT) in October 2022. We met you (Chris), several of the Expats living there, and several of the locals. We spent a total of three days just walking the town and enjoying the people. It really is a magical town. It was heartbreaking to hear that someone had set your car on fire. I'm glad to hear that is behind you. It makes sense that it wasn't a local person. I've never been to a place that the locals were so friendly. We literally had a Nona invite us into her home for coffee (she couldn't speak English and we couldn't speak Italian, google translate was very helpful). We were leaving that day and couldn't accept the offer unfortunately. We later learned that we had been unknowingly rude by not going in to her home. It's a very slow lifestyle that is based on building personal relationships in the village. I wish we could have had that coffee. It's a perfect place to retire, learn Italian, and make friends. I'm glad to hear that the storm has passed for you and the village.

Interesting. Yes before moving to a small place abroad these are things one may not think about. And yes one's own attitude is of course paramount but you are right that one very negative person can affect many other persons around him or her. It is sad really and silence sometimes works well but putting the spotlight on the situation without getting too emotional can also help. Glad to hear things have calmed down. So sad. Such a beautiful place. When I was there, I met many expats and Italians. It was a happy , friendly community. I really wanted to buy there. But I don’t want a car. Hopefully everyone fights back the one self centered moron.

Brava, Chris! I'm so glad you're sticking to your guns and with SDT! You've done so much for that village and I'm sure the vast majority appreciate it!!! I remember seeing a vid of someone's with a guy that was so full of hate and vitriol for everything that was going on that it was hard to watch. You don't have to speak the language to understand the negativity spewing out of this guy. Antonelo arrived and kind of ignored him, but even Antonelo recognised him for what he was. Pathetic! I'm so happy for Casa Christina! Buona avventura a Lei! I can't wait to visit!
