Awesome T-Shirt! ~$5k is tough! It will interesting to see what you came up with. I cringe everytime the forecast call for snow. The old rock salt was bad enough, but when they switched to liquid brine that became the death wish for our cars. The brine is a mix of rock salt (sodium chloride) and magnesium chloride, dissolved in water so is can be sprayed on the road. Magnesium chloride is much more corrosive than sodium chloride. Car rust and corrosion are caused by the acid created when the brine is dissolved by the moisture in the air. Rock salt remains a crystal until the humidity reaches 70% which doesn’t happen much during the winter. But magnesium chloride dissolves when there is only about 20 to 30% humidity. Which means that our vehicles, if magnesium chloride is sprayed on it, is wet constantly. The acid stays on your car and slowly eats away at the metal. The brine already is a liquid, so when we driving our cars over it it gets sprayed on and into the undercarriage and all the crevices - nasty stuff. If you remember the frame based cars of the 60's and 70's they always had rusted out rear quarter panels and door rockers, but the frames lasted much longer, even though the frames weren't as treated as they are today. The main reason is because the older rock salt wasn't nearly as corrosive as magnesium chloride and the older crystal based rock salt was easily washed off by the rain and water as you drove down the roads.

isn't the magnesium chloride what they use in Colorado area (real black gritty stuff i have been there in the winter) that is Supposed to be Much less corrosive to undercarriage and infrastructure bridges, roads, etc>?

I got lucky back in 2000 and found a 1989 Toyota single cab pickup v6 4x4 that was a 1 owner California vehicle with only 74,600 miles on it. I wasn't even in the market for a vehicle but took my company vehicle in to be serviced and seen it and asked how much it was . I was able to get it out the door for $2,000 it now has 142,500 miles on it. The only thing I've done to it other than service was a 2 inch body lift and 4 inch suspension and some 35 inch super swampers on it. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever had and very off road capable, I have had to pull my cousin's chevy z71 4x4 out of the mud and snow several time's. I'm so glad I seen that truck that day and it is going to end up being my grandsons truck when he gets old enough to drive. Keep up the great content, I'm catching up on your videos rt now.

Down here in Texas rust is much less of an issue, but prices on old Toyotas are insane. Especially if it's a truck or SUV. Unless it's a complete hooptie! We were in similar position with our '17 4R. Asking prices on Toyotas and Lexuses were much higher than we were willing to pay, so we got a low mileage 1st Gen Ridgeline to suck up DD miles.

Yessir you can find something under $10k, but it will probably take some work to be brought up to standards and will probably have 250k on it, but that’s nothing with proper maintenance on a yota! JP is adorable and most definitely a gear head already!! Haha that’s awesome!! Edit: that lex is beautiful!!! Great find for a reliable daily!

Being from the rust belt, that’s a solid Lexus!!! Congrats!!!! On my old cars, I look for Pacific Northwest or California. The shipping is less than rust repair. 😂 There are some decent first gen runners out there. Especially if you don’t mind an automatic.

@@tomc8115 if the paint + primer is scratched/chipped to naked metal then all that rain can be an issue... I have read in the mountainous areas of PNW they are now using de-icer of some sorts... Wyoming is an interesting place with lots of snow and cold but Very little road salts used for the most part in my experiences traveling there in the harsh winter... just need 4wd and Slow It Down! same goes for Montana that uses a lot of sand when i was there last year during the winter... Idaha and Utah are a different story with the de-icer they use

The rusty shit boxes private owners (let alone dealers) want to sell their vehicles for are insane. People go into debt when they buy these ALREADY as a rusty pile of garbage. Mind blowing they think they can make back their money or a profit. It should be criminal. There should be new rust laws of vehicles for sale to help and protect future owners.

There are some which are well maintained but they are hard to find. The owner would have to have been diligent about washing them off in the winter and protecting the frame with a Fluid Film or Wool Wax each year. Doubtful you'll find an 87 where this has been done, but maybe a 4th gen 4runner. My 06 was from NJ and not taken care of, and at 227K miles has needed a couple of frame repairs. My 14 is from PA and has been garaged, Fluid Filmed each year, and washed off regularly during the winter. It doesn't have a spot of rust. I'll eventually sell the 06 at fair market value, but the 14 is going to the grave with me. :)

I just bought a 2024 4Runner TRD Pro. and a Limited for the wife. Question, has Toyota done anything to help with the frame rust issues on the newer frames or are they still overly susceptible to rust. I live in NC where we don't have as harsh of winters typically as you do up north but they do occasionally use salt on the roads. I currently have a undercarriage washer attachment for my pressure washer that I use. I really had rather not put the fluid film on it if it's not totally necessary. I've done it on other vehicles and I'm not a fan of the messy dust magnet being on everything under the vehicle. Good luck on your hunt for a commuter! That Lexus looked pretty solid and the engine sound smooth.

Unfortunately from the factory, Toyota does nothing to protect our frames/investments. My best piece of advice is to get it undercoated ASAP, but if that’s something you don’t like… just know you’re running one expensive risk. I appreciate you watching!!
@KendrasEdge757

I’m in southeast VA and got a 21’ ORP. I had the undercoating done. The frames that were the problems were made by Dana and weren’t treated properly. The 4Runners are made in Japan entirely and aren’t the same frames as the past. Anything can rust of course, but I feel they’re a lot better than the ones made by Dana. I’d still undercoat it and keep it cleaned off good after every winter season.

@@nchighwayman you can do it yourself too! Vikings garage has a video on it I believe as well as plenty of others. Just lay down and spray inside the frame rails and then coat pretty much everything underneath except your exhaust (directly), brakes of course, but everything else is basically good to coat and do it annually every fall.
