Exquisite Folding Chess Board in a Leopardwood Box

Watch how I make a folding chess board with concealed magnets and colored epoxy logos on both sides. The folded board fits into a tray that fits into a leopardwood box. I made this for my neighbor who gave it as a wedding gift for close friends.
The chess board has 2.25" (57 mm) squares made from black walnut and quarter sawn sycamore. The board is 0.75" (19 mm) thick (1.5" when folded). The tray is 2" (50 mm) high and the folded board sit flush with the top of the tray because the bottom takes up 1/2" (12.5 mm).
The box is made from leopardwood with a bird's eye maple top. The bottom portion of the box is lined with curly maple, which is what the tray sits on. The box has Brusso JB-103 hinges and a JB-818 latch. I made my own template out of plywood for routing the recess for the JB-818 latch, although Brusso does sell a brass template that you can use.

Very nice set. At 40 lbs I wouldn't make it but that doesn't mean I wouldn't take it ! LOL. For delicate screws in hard wood I will often tap them or run a sacrificial harder screw to cut the threads a little better.As someone who plays chess at least seven hours a week I really admire a lot of the sets you have created.

The issue with solid hardwood is that it expands and contracts when humidity levels fluctuate. Plywood is much more stable, so it provides a good substrate that will stabilize wood movement when the hardwood squares are glued to it.

How do you manage your finish work in the winter months ? (fine kindling)

The climate is not too bad where I live, so I can often find a few days in a row in the winter that are in the mid-50's, which is fine for spraying on a finish. If it does get too cold out, I can warm up my workshop and use a spray tent. It's not ideal, but it works.
