Jarrod is the Gold Standard when it comes to in depth tech reviews for all things gaming laptops. Great content! I recently purchased an external monitor for my 17 inch Lenovo Legion, but hadn't really gotten into gaming with the external turned on (too used to the keyboard layout and feel of just using the laptop for gaming). It's an interesting thing indeed. I had a laptop that I use to play games. It has low/mid-end specs, around that range. So If I connect an external display, somehow it felt that the game run way smoother. I don't know if that was only my optical illusion, or the size of the screen that caused my perception to change, or is it actually improving the performance.

It was on clearance because it was considered an open box because someone purchased it and returned it the same day. The laptop was still sealed and had never been opened. It was too good of a deal to pass up. I've been on the fence lately of purchasing a 144hz external monitor not only to game, but to have dual monitors for work purposes. After watching this video, I'm going to invest $200 on a nice 24" gaming monitor. Thanks again!

Thank you for explaining why the performance increases when using an external monitor. It is also worth noting that if you have a laptop with RTX 2070 or 2080, connecting the computer to an external display with resolution of either 1440P or 4K yields additional gains in gaming performance. As far as I can tell, the reason is that high end RTX cards seem to want to run at more than 1080P and the 45W 9th gen intel i7 CPU in my computer creates a significant bottleneck in AAA games that tend to be more CPU intensive when running at 1080P. Outputting to an external display at either 2K or 4K seems to alleviate the CPU bottleneck so the benefits stack.

Quality review, exactly what I was looking for. Just got a question about the scaling issue. I've recently ordered the g15, it has a 1440p native resolution. I want to get an external monitor, Alienware 240hz 1080p, so just wondering will there be any scaling issues and such if I were to connect them. Is there any way to solve the issue if so, as I don't want to play on a 1440p external monitor, I'd rather get more FPS.

As you have explained in your video, it really improves the performance in gaming in terms of fps and resolution increase. Unfortunately, the gtx 1060 of this laptop cannot go to optimize the 8k resolution. My question is, since I really prefer to use laptop than PC for its mobility issue, can the rtx 3070 laptop go into the 8k resolution for my odyssey g9? otherwise I should buy an rtx 3070 PC for this dear monitor :) really need your suggestion for this. Great review. For older laptops the benefit could be much higher. I have an old Metabox P640, i7-6700hg and GTX-670m. I always knew from the NVIDIA utility that the external 1080p monitor is connected by DVI-DVI though the Intel GPU, but didn't expected performance penalty. Yesterday I got a mini display to HDMI cable, which connects directly to the GTX-670m and the difference is massive. I estimate FPS went up +50% on World of Warships and Total War series, I don't have any of the games you test on.

Very interesting. However, my concern is in the longevity of the laptop device itself when it's being subjected to gaming or high intense software tasks often. You only touched upon the screen Temperatures for both, but what about the actual computer CPU Temp? Is there a difference in actual CPU Temps with or without a second monitor? Of course, most "gaming" and high performance laptops always have this high temperature issue, but some are more notorious than others, such as the Acer Predator series. Thanks for reading this far. I'm just a concerned person who wants to make a desktop with my laptop and an LG TV monitor, if that's even possible.
