There are 3 possible pronunciations for the -ED at the end of a word: /t/, /d/, and /id/. Play along with Misha and Larissa as they practice how to pronounce -ED endings.
More pronunciation videos: • Pronunciation
Some sounds in English are voiced (your vocal chords move) and some are voiceless (your vocal chords DO NOT move).
The RULES
1. If the base word ends in a voiceless sound, -ed sounds like /t/.
2. If the base word ends in a voiced sound, -ed sounds like /d/.
3. If the base word ends in a /t/ or /d/ sound, -ed sounds like /id/.
Only add an extra syllable in the 3rd case.
1. worked = workt
2. travel = traveld
2. wanted = want-ed

Thanks for this amazing video! If possible, could you please explain how "learned" (in the sense of someone who knows a lot) should be pronounced? I thought it should be "d", but most people seem to say "learn+ID".
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 2 жыл бұрын
If it is being used as an adjective (eg. He is a learned person), people usually pronounce it learn+id, though you could also pronounce it learneD. Used in the past tense, it's pronounced with a D or even T at the end.

@@ExtraEnglishPractice Thanks! Would you say that the "D" pronunciation would be the "technically" correct one?

If there's either a "d" or a "t" or any other consonant, do American native speakers tend to pronounce the final consonants with the stop sounds? Such as: e.g.: I talked | to my grandma yesterday or what happened | ?

Hey I have one doubt..When the word is start then 't' in the end pronounce voiceless sound so with that logic it should be pronounced like start't'. Though I know this can't be true but with the rules which u taught this is how it would go. Am I right?
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 4 жыл бұрын
If a word ends in a "T" or "D" sound, we pronounce the "-ed" as an extra syllable. So, it would be start-ID.

What would the ending be on the word "stone"? Or "waste"? Thx for the help xD
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 7 жыл бұрын
Well, Dane, "stoned" would be pronounced with a D sound, since "stone" ends in an N sound (which is voiced). "Wasted" would be pronounced with an extra syllable, since "waste" ends in a T sound. Thank you for your question! ;)

PLease next time could you do examples where a student makes a mistake for the game? Of course you both know the answer, but you could say 'surpis-ed' or something, what do you do in that situation? They have to try again? Move on to the next person? Etc
