Game 1 (example/clothing 1): 4:40
Game 2 (clothing 2): 5:30
Game 3 (sports 1): 6:30
Game 4 (sports 2): 7:35
Game 5 (countries): 8:17
Game 6 (words that start with d): 9:04
Game 7 (words that start with m): 10:15
Review: 0:10
English words are made of syllables. Syllables contain one vowel sound (not vowel letter).
Examples:
HAT has 1 vowel (a) and 1 vowel sound
HEAT has 2 vowels (e,a), but only 1 vowel sound
BEAUTIFUL has 5 vowels, but only 3 vowel sounds
note: final -e is silent (and not a syllable) except when it follows L
COLLEGE has 3 vowels, but only 2 vowel sounds
LITTLE has 2 vowels and 2 vowel sounds
Why count syllables?
Syllables are important because errors in syllables often cause confusion and misunderstanding. If you add or subtract a syllable, people may not understand you. Similarly, if you stress the wrong syllable, people may not understand you.
How can I know how many syllables are in a word?
1. say the word, and tap out the vowel sounds
2. look in a dictionary
3. ask someone

Thank you for video. You explain very easy. But how to decide to which syllable does a consonant belong?
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 4 жыл бұрын
There are patterns. For example, if the vowel has a long sound, divide before the consonant that follows (spi - te), but if the vowel has a short sound, divide after the consonant that follows it (spir - it).

Why bermuda shorts has 4 syllables? Is that ber/mu/da shor/ts? But why mu is one syllable? It pronunces mju: , but ju: is not a vowel sound.
@xiupingwu3952
@xiupingwu3952 4 жыл бұрын
I got the answer myself after 2 hours searching on the Internet. I used to think that ju: is a consonant. Actually ju: consists of j and u: j is a consonant and u: is a vowel sound.
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 4 жыл бұрын
"Shorts" is one syllable (it has only one vowel sound, therefore one syllable). The middle syllable in Bermuda -- MU -- has one vowel sound, the u: sound.

Word DES-CRIP-TIVE has 3 syllables and the third syllable has 2 vowels..So what is the rule of pronunciation in this and and can we apply that when there are two,the first one does the talking rule?
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 3 жыл бұрын
The rule of "when two vowels go walking" is for two vowels that are together (like rEAd). In "descriptive" , the vowels are separated. It's a "silent E". Try watching this video to learn more about words that end in E. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gahpqNyJ3tfemHk.html

In the brigade word bri/gade 'i' pronunced as short 'i' sound in the crisis word cri/sis 'i' pronunced as long sound 'i' and why
@ExtraEnglishPractice
@ExtraEnglishPractice 3 жыл бұрын
Vowel "rules" are inconsistent in English. Typically, in a syllable with only one vowel, the vowel sound is short. However, there are many exceptions. One thing to consider is the origin of the word (ex. brigade comes from Latin, crisis from Greek).

About the VCV (short), how to say in real speaking? For example: In Cambridge Dictionary, i see: They write the word 'menu' is /ˈmen.ju/, but i hear many native speakers say /ˈme.nju/ They write the word 'city' is /ˈsɪt̬·i/, but i hear many native speakers say /ˈsɪ.t̬i/ /ˈmen.ju/ and /ˈme.nju/, which is correct? Is there any different when speaking these two syllable types. /ˈsɪt̬·i/ and /ˈsɪ.t̬i/, which is correct? Is there any different when speaking these two syllable types. Why people usually speak different with syllable division in dictionary?
