Elle Fanning is playing Michelle Carter in ‘The Girl from Plainville,’ which takes on the true-crime texting suicide case that shocked the nation. In a new interview with ‘Extra’s’ Jenn Lahmers, Elle opens up about how she prepared for the role and why she didn’t meet with the real Michelle Carter. Jenn also speaks to Colton Ryan, who plays Conrad Roy, and Chloë Sevigny, who portrays Conrad’s mother Lynn Roy.

She was NOT villainized by the media. The media was reporting the TRUTH which is she encouraged her boyfriend to kill himself when he already got out of his truck because he was trying to fight depression. She told him to get back in the truck when. She is as disgusting of people who are guilty of premeditated murder. I can’t look at her face without wanting to throw up.

@@deww-se1ri well said. My thoughts exactly. I was so a Disgusted to hear of the short sentence she did and was released early for good behavior. Definitely a slap on the wrist. She helped end someone's life and that's all she served? 🤦🏽‍♀️The courts pretty much just said it's okay what she did. And your telling the world and possibly others like her that it's not a big deal to bully someone into committing suicide. I have twin sisters who struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts and the thought of someone encouraging them to end their lives makes me angry and fearful that people like her exist.

Don't let Elle Fanning's great performance distract you from the fact that Michelle was not some innocent waif that was wrongfully 'villainized' by the evil media, she WAS the VILLAIN! Encouraging a mentally unstable guy to take his life instead of encouraging him to get help or refusing to take any part in his suicidal ideation. No matter how you look at it, she was beyond evil and should've sat for at least 20 years. It must've been extremely hard for his family to watch this series, hope they can find peace. RIP Conor!

If I was Cocos family , I would be so upset . Not at the movie itself but the way they portrayed Michelle like some hopeless romantic , who was innocent and bullied and as if she had some type of underlying reason for what she did . Disgusting that it sort of favored her view and just made Coco look like a troubled kid who never stood a chance. This is terrible . Very realistic and good as general true crime movie but just disgusting as a family member . I would be so upset at how the movie just favored her in a sense . Smh

I think the actress that played the mother hit it right on the nail. I simply just believe that Michelle did not know how to handle a situation like this. Two teenagers with depression and a eating disorder both trying to help each other. Imagine that. Yes, she was wrong for telling him to get back in but imagine someone telling you constantly they want to die and can’t be saved, eventually you just start to believe that’s really what they wanted. Maybe not the average person butt a person with depression I slightly understand. I do not know all the details and don’t even know if all the details in the series was correct but that’s my take. I’m sorry for his family’s loss and hope something like this doesn’t happen again! **Added: i especially agreed with her using this sympathy as means for attention or gaining friends. Which is why I think television & the media now of days can sometimes be a dangerous thing.

tbh, i think she just started to hate him and got frustrated. OR she didnt think he would succeed in doing it I know what its like to act as someones therapist while you are struggling too. Its the worst feeling ever because its constant negativity. Any normal person with depression would have either got them help or stopped talking to them completely. If you truly love someone then you wouldnt want them to die that way even if thats what they want.

I think elle was trying to say, that when a case hits the media its black and white, people want a villian. The law has to take out all the gray areas and present only facts, the media creates a story around facts, but not all the facts. The very reason rape victims don't report it. Because they are shredded in the media. If they were 17 struggling with mentle illness or anything else for that matter, they became folia due ,.its very sad all around. I think she clarified, yea she did villainous things, she may be a villian, but she was a person. Everyone asks why do these things happen, reasons aren't excuses. They are just why..not what if..or why didnt someone do something differently. Well its just because of a million things. Its sad for everyone. My heart goes out to anyone that goes through or tries to deal with anything like this situation. Hind sight is always 20/20.

Elle Fanning was fantastic in this role (as she was in the remake of the Beguiled) and I have to say why all the sympathy for Michelle Carter? She wasn't the one who died. Conrad was the victim. The Roy's will never have their son back again. Yes, she had her own problems and needed therapy. Yes, she had an eating disorder. BUT her little scene of playing the "grieving girlfriend" wouldn't have come about if Conrad had changed his mind at any point on the night he was going to kill himself. I think if he had only didn't take/broke/or forgot his phone, this would have never of happened. He seemed to have wanted to live, only he didn't want to live with his shyness and social anxiety. I think the Michelle Carter situation forgot all of that. Also, I believe it the situation was reversed if Conrad was the one who told Michelle to "get back in the truck," and IF SHE DIED as a result. The court, nor anyone would have been sympathetic to him. He would have been portrayed as an abusive bastard. What a slap in the face to the Roy family who loved this kid.

I think she just got tired of it so she started to tell him to just do it. It was a dark relationship in my opinion and was not healthy what so ever. They had conversations like that every night, it prob felt normal to her, I mean she was young and naive. The boy would belittle her, plus they were kids. How many kids do this dumb shit and tell their friends they hope they die not realizing words can actually be permanent? I sympathize, the situation sucks because someone lost their life but I do not blame her, Conrad had those issues before her and his parents didn’t give him the full help he needed. If he even could’ve been helped! Depression tends to win sadly

I agree, it’s messed up that she told him to get back into the car but I can understand her point of view, worn down and not taking him seriously. I personally don’t think anyone can make anyone else k*ll themselves, he clearly wanted to do that already

@@Emerysaf I have yet to but I can imagine. A lot of the "evil" comments seem to be coming from (religious?) people who haven't watched the doco, the Hulu show or know the facts of the case. They are just fixating on the sensational bits like her telling him to get back in the truck or suggest drinking bleach. They come off like simplistic people who see the world only in black and white, simply because they're too lazy/impatient to think on it more deeply. It's easier to brand someone an evil villain than it is to dissect what is wrong with our society.

This is NOT a love story. This girl did NOT love Conrad. If she loved him she wouldn't have encouraged him to take his life and by the way she wasn't being villanized. She was the one who literally said do it to him. And she looked the other way when he did and then enjoyed all the attention after it. She is NOT the victim. Conrad is the victim.

The part of the show that irritates me is the Glee stuff, mainly the scene with the singing. I get that she used quotes from Glee in her texts, but that filler stuff is annoying and really doesn’t add anything to the show in my opinion.

I feel like it was added to make the point about how psychopathic she was… like she literally studied Lea’s emotions so that she could pretend she had all these feelings and gain attention from others. She had to teach herself to copy that performance to gain sympathy.

Her story is clearly in the messages, Elle made a great decision not meeting with that woman. She doesn't need any one has sweet as elle to meet her. Clearly you didn't follow the case, and see those messages. Pure evil, 3 sides my ass what about CONRAD ROY 3 HE DIDN'T GET TO TELL HIS SIDE. SHE WAS CALCULATING AND SELFISH ONE OF THE REASONS WHY SHE KILLED CONRAD WAS to GET ATTENTION AND GET FRIENDS SHE DIDN'T DESERVE TO MEET ANYBODY ELSE SO YOU'RE WRONG PERIOD.

Wow. Okay so, there are definitely three sides to every story buuuut giving this woman more attention, particularly from a celebrity working on a show for Hulu, wasn’t going to do anything positive for Conrad Roy’s family or for Michelle Carter. This isn’t like Anna Sorokin or the Tinder Swindler, Conrad is deceased. Michelle on the other hand, served 11 months in jail and she’s alive hopefully getting treatment for her issues. Besides, the court that tried this case did more to provide Justice than any court of opinion or your average Hulu-binge watcher will. Additionally, there have already been shows and specials on this tragedy on HBO etc, so Hulu’s series is coming in late, and looks like a tasteless attempt to sensationalize the story and Michelle Carter’s life while also re-traumatizing Conrad Roy’s family with media attention recirculating. I mean seriously, the text messages between them say plenty and so did her friends in court. Conrad doesn’t get to provide his “side” either so at this point, as far as this show goes, the scales are balanced. I’m of the opinion that out of respect for his family, she should never speak to the entertainment world about this horrific situation. Elle Fanning took the mature, empathetic route by steering clear of Michelle Carter.

How cand people be like this blame everything on one person like that. From all we saw michelle had problems too and she really was inlove u can see all their text on the internet. Conrad liked the attention he was gettin from her after a while and he just complains to her and respondes when he needs her She was by his side all the time but after a while i get she had enough. Think about the emotions she goes to everyday thinking he’s gonna kill himself.. it can happen at any moment.THAT is emotional trauma for her to. Who know what the pills made to her cause I think she got in a place where si didn’t realised what is real or not anymore… people Should just read their mesaages to realize what kind of relationship they had..

Don’t justify what she did. She clearly said “get back in the vehicle” which encouraged him to commit suicide. End of story. Imagine how his family felt. It’s not about her. It’s not about how she felt. She encouraged a suicide because of her own selfishness of not wanting to deal with it anymore.

@Safiya Anissa but again it doesn’t justify for her to get involved. She should’ve just stopped when she had the chance. I’m not saying it was all her fault because yes he would’ve done it anyways but enabling it is unhealthy for her mental state as well

I have a great idea for law enforcement in the United States: Why don't they just put all the kids in jail who play cops-and-robbers? One pretends to be a representative of the state's monopoly on the use of force, and the other wants to be a criminal. Anyone who engages in such criminal behavior at such a young age should be locked up preventively anyway, before he or she can become a danger to society! Besides, it can happen that children also kill each other during this terribly dangerous game.
