my grandfather and I had an ax, a tree saw, a sledge hammer and a maul. We cut firewood all year long so we had more than enough for our house which was heated by a wood stove in the basement. We never once went cold. In fact, a few times we backed the truck up and took some to the neighbors if they were hurting. No charge. He was that type of man. Being with him, it didn't seem like work or a chore. He always talked and told stories while we did it. Even throughout the year when we would go walking through the woods he'd say "never walk back empty handed. We'd drag wood behind us or we had twine where we would bundle up kindling. Every day was a constant adventure or camp out with him.

It's interesting to see how different these are, seems like a lot of them don't split small enough for the fireplace. You'd have to go back and dig through the pile and manually split up the big stuff. And I have yet to see automation in the other end of the wood pile. How about having some kind of metal crates that actually hold the split wood, something that you can move around with a skid steer, like dump the split wood into a crate, then when that crate is full have an automated system to move in an empty crate. The piling, stacking and moving of the split wood is what takes the most work. Maybe have some kind of stackable crates that you can stack up in a barn.

13:03 is by far the best firewood processor I have ever seen. Never have to step out of the cab, it doesn't require a slow chainsaw, you just use pure hydraulic pressure and you have it cut and split in one action.

True Cha-ka, but it is cutting and splitting softwood. I think it would'nt do such a neat job on bigger logs of hardwood.
@cha-ka8671
@cha-ka8671 Жыл бұрын
@@yvespetit You're probably 100% correct on that about the hardwood. But, you have to admit it's wicked. I've only seen one other on youtube that beats it. It's some guys contraption where his tractor lifts the log vertically and one the log gets cut, it then gets split. Easily dumping the cut and split load into the back of a truck.

Although some machinery wasn't "extreme fast" and some required more human direction than being "automatic", it's fascinating to watch them at work. I wondered why some machine-processed wood was just dumped on the ground instead of into a truck. Some mighty big chunks there, some bigger than most woodstoves can handle.

My neighbors burn wood for heat to save money on propane or electric heating. It is really hard to fit in the $50,000 to $500,000 worth of machines plus the 3 or 4 operators that were in most of the videos into the money saved by burning wood. Somehow they seem to be able to get by without a skidsteer, a trackhoe, dump trailer, or even that 50 to 70HP tractor.

@shannonp4037
@shannonp4037 3 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about this too. I see a long set of i-beams where the logs get stacked right off the truck. The i-beams slope or the logs get pushed down hill via an automated/push button device towards the lifting chains to bring them up on the table for staging right before being pushed on the saw conveyor to be cut. The get cut, split, conveyed and cleaned and dropped into a waiting truck or shipping container. The containers can also be on rails to pull them away from the drop area when full with the empties behind waiting to get filled. If done right, the full containers are higher than a truck as well as tiltable. This way they can just get dumped into a truck when it is available. Basically, it is an automated assembly line run by 1 person. No loader is needed to load the logs or the cut wood either.

I found that simply buying the stocks of large integrated oil companies when prices are down produces enough dividends and capital gains when prices rise, to simply heat with oil. Saves a lot of time and energy to engage in more productive pursuits than handling firewood. I'd say the money you need to execute on this investment strategy is less than buying all the wood processing equipment.
