After seeing a series of tiktoks from 20 year old "mod artists" advertising eye tattoos without a single mention of the risks, and arguing that this procedure is 100% safe, I felt strongly that I needed to talk about the reality of this process and the risks. I hope that by doing so I can continue to help folks make educated, informed decisions about how they modify their bodies.

Wow. I’ve never seen actual photos of things going wrong before. I’ve been questioning the transparency about this procedure for a while. I normally don’t hear stories of a eyeball tattoos going wrong but I’m also told that it happens often without any context or real life experiences to show exactly what the risks are. I think it’s very important that we have more transparency about the procedure. I’m neither for nor against eyeball tattoos (I don’t want it for myself personally), but I am a big believer in informed consent and I haven’t seen enough of the negative experiences to feel like I would truly be informed enough to do something like this. Maybe the body mod industry doesn’t want the negative press or high profile stories about people losing their eyes or vision to tarnish the reputation of the industry and it’s artists, but I would rather hear the horror stories and know what I’m getting myself into. This video is so important for the discussion. It would be great if more people would document the long-term effects.

I spoke with a number of people who have had bad side effects but are scared to speak out. Both because they have been threatened but also because of legal grey areas that could land them and their artists in trouble. It’s unfortunate but a lot of these negative stories get buried or hidden. That’s part of how we now have a generation of unsuspecting clients being told by Inexperienced practitioners that this is a safe procedure. It’s exactly why I wanted to make this video.

I’ve seen a few videos where the modified person would admit to now being “blind”, but to what extent they don’t say. And they’re all like “La, la, and now I’m blind, but that’s ok because I love my mod…” They’re so cavalier about it that it makes me wonder about so many things that might be going on on a lot of levels. Scary and sad.

There's but one thing I'll always, as an european, envy the americans and it's the piercing/bodymod community & it's level of awareness, it's definitely way more mature, which makes sense since that's where modern piercing culture began. Regarding eyeball tattoos - there's a person in my country that used to do them (among other mods). They messed up so bad one time that the person they did the tattoo on has not only lost their vision almost completely, they actually needed to have one of their eyeballs surgically removed - it's been years and they're still forced to go through painful medical procedures to deal with the mess this guy made. The modification "artist" has taken absolutely no responsibility, still claims the procedure was done correctly (it absolutely was not, as stated by medical professionals) & has not at any point apologised to the person they blinded for life. And no one seems to care really, this person is to this day held in very high esteem within the community. It's good seeing your content and the traction it gets, kinda makes me hopeful that in time we might get smarter over here. Thanks & stay safe xx

Thank you, Lynn. These things need to be said-and seen. I just got a couple of helix piercings over the weekend, and my piercer and I got on the subject of body mods (I mentioned that my sister was born with one ear that’s naturally pointed), especially the extreme ones of various types. He said (and I agree totally and we’re both not judgmental people) that any body mod that can make you disabled, as in needing SSDI, a handicapped parking spot, or anything more drastic than that just shouldn’t be considered seriously as an option and shouldn’t be done by anyone. We weren’t talking about sclera tattooing specifically, but we were talking exactly about sclera tattooing because it fits in the disabling category of body mods. I’m nearsighted, and my sister and one of my brothers are more severely nearsighted, and that’s bad enough to never think about doing anything that could further impair vision. I’ve also have migraines (not visually related), and they are agony. I’m on fmla, and that’s no fun at all but I’m grateful that I have that option. My husband is on SSDI for multiple orthopedic problems, and that’s no fun either. I doubt that either would be available for self-inflicted impairments. Real life can smack you upside the head when you least expect it. ❤️✊

There’s a lot of heavy mods that I’ve seen as a teenager that I went “hey, I want that!”, and most of them, I still want and plan to get. This was another thing I saw when I was like, 16 or so, and thought I HAD to have it. It’s very unique and beautiful, but the risks, and chances of complication…far too much. I’ll stick to tongue splits and ear pointing and scalpeling.

I’ve known about sclera tattoos since I was young since I’ve always been interested in body modification and I knew about the impaired vision risks but this is the first time all of the major risks that can come with this procedure! While I think many body mods are super cool there’s such a grey area since body mod artists don’t go to med school or have access to medical environments or equipment. It’s so important to understand that these are high risk procedures. There are plenty of medical procedures that go wrong, I guess the big differences is in theory doctors have to tell you all the risks that come with a procedure while a body mod artist might not which could also be because like you said, we don’t have any solid research on the effects of certain modifications.

I remember 20 years ago when i was just getting into the industry in new york, that the shop owners brother was a dentist and he had studied the new vibrant colours that had become popular through a chemical spectrum machine, just to see. It was printer's ink, just printer's ink with absolutely no modifications to make it for human consumption. Im sure they have changed the formulas by now, but since then i have suck with traditional, old colours (and all of the known problems that they bring). Better the devil you know

Hello, I really like your videos and I have a request. Could you make the same type of video about coinslots? I really want to have one or two done on my ears and I already did a lot of research and asked people online about their experiences but nobody ever mentioned any risks or things that went wrong and this makes me feel unsure about the whole thing. I mean, there can always go something wrong, even with the "easiest" piercing. I just want to know the risks before I decide to actually get it done and I'm afraid that the artist might not tell me.

I’ve researched all the risks and heard it all but still would like to hypothetically do it some day lol especially for the sake of research. I reached out to an artist asking about it and he said he’d only do it on someone with a heavily tattooed face. I did know of a guy who only had one eye tattooed but he was blind in the eye beforehand

I am a 100% believer in bodily autonomy- and if you are sure you want to do it then go for it! It would be amazing to see some folks who are comfortable with the risk do it and take the opportunity to document and get us more data and information.

I have always loved the look of black scleras so much. ever since I saw them first as a child. I know thought, that I'll probably never get them done. I knew that there could be a lot of problems with incorrect application, but hearing that there's a risk of inflamation and irritation even when it's done correctly, makes me really doubt to ever do it to myself. I already struggle with migraines, so it'd be terrible to get even more attacks... speaking of which, you mentioned you also get migraines (though the trigger is your eye), does having a bridge piercing affected the intesity or frequency of your attacks? I'm interested in getting one myself, but with my migraines and headaches, I'm afraid it won't be a piercing I can get

My bridge has not effected my migraines or headaches at all, although the first few days with swelling I did have one. Outside of that- no change. It’s pretty safe for folks with migraines to get.

There are many body mods that I'd love to get but eyeballs are still a huge no even though I love the look. Even if you forget about all the health problems, they're very, very, permanent. Sure, regular tattoos are, too, but if you don't like one you can cover it up with clothing, foundation, get a coverup, laser, etc. I haven't heard of any ways to remove eyeball tattoos, and I dread to think about the possible regret and social backlash. If in the future some safe, removable ink gets invented, I would maybe consider it (if I'm lucky enough to be in a line of work where I can get them). As of now, sclera lenses are a way better alternative.

Thank you. I will say it again: Thank you. I once thought this was cool but when Luna Cobra (the person who first made this entire experimental procedure of tattooing sclera lenses a thing) stopped doing the procedure over a decade ago because people did not want to get apprenticed under him (since he was the ONLY person with ANY experience including how he practiced this procedure) and on top of that he knew what a dangerous procedure this was I said "NOPE." Then I saw photos in the following years of what can go wrong with the skin folds and eyes, and I said "Nope." Nope Nope Nope. I would love to get Eye Jewelry done one day but I am terrible with putting drops in my eyes (which I needed to do for a corneal tear) so I don't know if even that would be feasible. So when it comes to eyeballs: Unfortunately, it should be an immediate no. So thank you, seriously Thank You For Spreading Awareness to everyone young and old. I cannot say thank you enough for actually making a video, showing photos of what can go wrong, telling people they can lose their vision, and steering people away from doing this. It's not only experimental but it is NOT a safe or well-practiced procedure.

Hey, Lynn! Would you mind talking about bioflex material in piercings? My piercer whom I trust says they use it for nipple piercings, yet there are things that I read thst discourages that? Trying to get a straightforward opinion! I've never had any piercing with bioflex before.

revisiting this video because i learned about kerato pigmentation which is very similar but is used to change eye color (and is done by an optometrist LOL). one doctor's been doing it for 10 years and published a paper revealing a 12% complication rate in his ~200 patients. just some food for thought about a near future of heavy body mods being done by professionals?

how are the photos of it going wrong credible? two of them is a woman who did it by herself at home and 3 were from a girl who got it done by her tattoo artist boyfriend who's never done anything like that before. the rest of the photos I don't know but I doubt they were done by say luna cobra or someone with years of experience in a professional environment. if you compare the amount of perfectly executed work to the few pictures that you're able to find I feel like the risk is minimal. obviously talking about the risks is great and should be out there but I feel like in this video especially the examples given aren't credible. it's like saying "don't pierce your lobes this can happen" and then showing lobe piercings done with a fishing hook aka very few examples of it and the reason it went wrong is that the work wasn't executed nicely. even if you do some research by yourself it's very difficult to find a good amount of poorly done work especially compared to good work
@Lynn_Loheide
@Lynn_Loheide Жыл бұрын
This comment is pretty misleading. You are incorrect with a lot of this info. The girl you say got it done by her boyfriend who didn’t know better is blatantly false. “The procedure was done by someone who told me that they were experienced," she said in a subsequent video. "It is my fault that I believed him. It is my fault that I gave in when they repetitively asked me to do my eye." She was mislead that he was an experienced practitioner, and he was openly advertising his experience in sclera tattoos online. The other images are of folks who did see various artists. A major reason I wanted to make this video is because there’s an influx of people claiming to be trained and educated in this procedure taking advantage of people who don’t know any better. It’s not like much of this information is readily accessible online. This is incomparable to the risks of a poorly done earlobe piercing. Loosing your vision just doesn’t compare to a poorly pierced ear. FWIW there are a number of people who have been tattooed by Luna cobra who do self report issues with headaches and visually induced migraines. No matter how well this procedure is done and how experienced the practitioner, there is always a very real risk to your eyes just based off the pressure and reactivity of the eye. I will always believe strongly in giving clients all the information to make an informed decision- even when that information is “unpopular” to share.
