I think this is a really important conversation to have and to keep having. It's better now then it was in the past to be more visibly modified, but it still comes with a great deal of discrimination and struggle. Those planning on a career or lifestyle like this should be aware and prepared for what exactly that means.
I considered touching on colonization, western religion, purity culture, homophobia, queer culture, and the erasure of indigenous practices in this video because that's really where we can trace the discrimination of body modification back to but that felt like something worth it's own video. I also just wanted to be a bit more personal and vulnerable in this one. Would y'all want to see a deeper historical look at the context of discrimination of body modification? Let me know.

When I got my latest facial piercings last year, I suddenly realized that I’m now the most “visibly modified” person in the room among my friends and in my small Bible Belt community. It was a strange feeling at first to be suddenly visibly modded and to have people look at you a certain way. I told my mom about it and her reaction was “isn’t that what you wanted?” It’s complicated. I want the mods, but I’m not trying to be more modded than everyone else. It just kind of happened. It’s not even the judgement that’s always weird. Sometimes it’s just the trippy reality that people in mainstream society don’t look like you anymore.

That’s such a poor response, I’m so sorry!! No, that’s not what we wanted; we wanted to modify our appearance the way we wanted. Others opinions and feelings are simply their problem.

Oh yeah like I’m not even heavily modded yet most jobs I’ve had due to my 3 facial piercings I’m the most visibly modded person. A lot of people seem to not notice my wrist tattoo but if someone sees me without my mask cuz I was eating or taking meds or whatever my nostril and cyber bite piercings are very visible. I personally haven’t experienced much anything about it but also the only job I would have had where it would have been a problem I wasn’t in anymore + mask mandates when I got my lips done.

@@christinak4082exactly! Like is it nice if someone thinks you look cool? Sure but literally nobody’s opionion but your own matters in these things 😭 except maybe your boss but with the pandemic you can hide some things by continuing to mask (and if people give you shit idk tell them you have tuberculosis or something)

I have 31 piercings,most in my ears but I also have septum, nostril and tongue visible. I'm a graduate paramedic practitioner. I have worked front line and with the very frail house bound while I work towards my mastes, including end of life patients. Not once has a patient ever denied me to treat them in their time of need. I have however faced criticism from colleagues for how I look. I am a professional due to my ten years experience, conduct and qualifications, not for my appearance.

I noticed an interesting development in this phenomenon in Europe, during the labor shortage toward the end of the pandemic. A lot of traditionally conservative sectors started advertising job vacancies specifically aiming at some folks that had not been their first choice before: younger people with visible modifications, and older people. A few months later it was reflected in the people they hired, at least from what I saw. So I have the impression modifications are becoming less of a workplace issue. I hope. Good for my short sleeve t shirt days 😊

I’ve also met people who have said the same thing, like youd look good without all those face piercings like wtf? You don’t hear how rude that is? I’ve also dated someone who wanted me to take out my piercings and hide my tattoos AFTER dating them. It’s so rude

Love this video. You are beautiful and amazing. I am trans MTF and I so feel this 100%. The looks I get when I’m out at times it’s just hurtful. But I am going to be me and nobody will ever stop me from being me. I have 12 piercings and plan to get many more and just got a forearm tattoo showing that I am transgender. I will never hide who I am again. I haven’t seen my doctor since I got my piercings so now I am interested how that will go but he is helping me transition so I doubt I will have issues. Keep doing more videos like this please. I feel more people need to know they aren’t the only ones that this happens to. ❤

I work in a traditionally "conservative" environment and have for more than 20 years. I've had piercings and tattoos the entire time, but until the last year or so, they've been hidden under clothes. For my birthday last year, I got my tongue pierced. Within days, somebody had complained to management and my response was that, nationally, I can't be the first person to have their tongue pierced. Since then, I've added four ear piercings that aren't my lobes (3 done by Lynn). This is the same sort of environment where several people have sleeve tattoos, somebody has their septum pierced, but for some reason, tongue was a bridge too far for people... And this is in Seattle....

I think the judgement is based on how painful/difficult people believe a piercing is. they assume if we’re willing to go through that, then it must mean we LOVE pain which makes us insane to them. 🙃 also what an honour to be pierced by lynn. I’m in the UK so there’s no chance of that for me.

This is so true. Definitely if you're someone who doesn't even want to attract attention in the first place... and you're just getting these modifications to feel more like yourself, this can be so challenging. Considering how I'm nowhere near done with how many modifications I'd like, and I've already gotten so many comments and insults already... it's definitely not for the faint of heart!

Thank you for this! I'm a young person with only a couple tattoos, septum, lobes and daith right now, and being in the south, I've already been getting comments about it a lot. I really love the way mods look and want more, but since I'm trying to be a business owner, travel the world and maybe even live abroad someday, I'm worried that getting the mods/piercings/tattoos I want can prevent that. For now, I'm just going to focus on getting a couple ear piercings a year, but it's frustrating to hear what you and other modded folks go through on a daily basis. I hope someday soon, our society will become more accepting of people having bodily autonomy.

Spectacular video of this hidden cost of mods! I know I shouldn't be surprised when triggered people judge, but I have been so often in the past. This video is such a thoughtful dive into how normal it is to get comments; I'm taking some time to consider what my responses can be - it's coming up on summer, of course it's going to happen again. My sympathies to those who have been hurt by judging! Why I'm becoming a Lynn follower is your open sharing about the ways you meet whatever comes up with your heart. For all the shitty comments, I'm hearing your balance and sensitivity come through. Being disappointed in their comments hasn't hardened your heart to people in general, I so appreciate that you're using your experiences to help others, and that offers a welcoming space for those of us who have received those same kind of comments. Many many thanks!

I got my second nostril piercing, labret, and vertical labret in the post-COVID world we live in and since I work in a medical office, they, along with my existing septum and nostril piercings, have been concealed under a mask most of the time. This isn’t the industry or role I want to stay in, though, so I’ve been having to consider the visible mods I have now and will be getting in the future. It’s tough being in the south with all that but that’s one of the reasons I’m trying to get back to the west coast and work from home.

what I wish people talked about more is that the healing process isn't gonna be smooth every time. sometimes it'll be hell on earth. one of my lip piercings got embedded and had to be cut out with a scalpel, and my nose piercing has gone a year with no sign of healing and refuses to have a ring put in without swelling and oozing and having the biggest hypertrophic scars I've ever seen, that 3 to 6 month healing period is an average, not a guarantee.
@LiterallyAllNamesAreTaken
@LiterallyAllNamesAreTaken 8 ай бұрын
6 months is the *minimum* 😅 my nose piercing is tricky too but it was done (years ago) with a gun unfortunately so that could be why. as for your lip piercing, it wouldn’t have embedded if a long enough bar was put in. my philtrum was pierced with a 12mm. I’m concerned you’ve gone to a bad piercer. with bad advice, bad practice…

I also feel like the presence of social media has also affected people who are heavily modded, I myself have fallen into piercing subspace communities on Instagram, Reddit, TikTok, etc., and I’ve also recently realized that because of my interests, I often see more people online who are heavily modded, but so rarely see people in real life who are as heavily modded as I am. I feel like social media has desensitized a lot of us who are heavily modded. I look at my face and don’t feel as though I’m heavily modded, but I know via other peoples reactions to my piercings that I am thankfully I rarely get negative reactions to my mods and I also feel like that’s due to where I live, it’s more generally accepted to have piercings and tattoos, thankfully.

I got my face tattoos and throat piece done around the same time and wow did my life change. people looked at me differently, i went from being approachable now to people staying clear of me. .. Relationships are tough cause their parents think im just some "thug" or "punk" and their parents are unaccepting and its a challenge! alot changes with this lifestyle. it is a lifestyle and (new world) so yes be prepared because i knew i would be judged and be ready for it but like you said if i go to the hospital with my finger half cut off ...you get Tylenol!! and i live in FLORIDA. Very judgemental place. getting jobs is tougher and you can tell when your being treated differentlty or side eyed. yuppppppp

Also the "buy the ticket, ride the ride" idea just totally neglects what consent is. The idea that by doing X you agree to Y is frustratingly common. By doing what you want with your body you are *not* consenting to weird bullshit from strangers.

i was just thinking about this today. i have 12 mm stretched ears, a vertical labret, nostril piercing and i just started stacking my septum, i have two rings in now. i have a job interview on friday and i am nervous about how my piercings may negatively impact the interviewers perception of me. i really need this job and i'm scared that i shot myself in the foot because i just had to look how i wanted to instead of like a normal person. it might very well be fine but this is the first time i've had a job interview with all the mods i have now.

I consider myself a fairly modified person. I currently have 8 facial piercings, stretched ears, LOTS of visible tattoos, and a tattoo that is clearly on the side of my face, going onto my ear. I also have brightly colored hair. I work in a hospital for a major medical corporation in my area. Things are definitely starting to change out there. I’m not saying it isn’t painfully slow. Modifications have nothing to do with work ethic. Modifications don’t make you a good or bad person. They’re embellishments, dude. I’m FINALLY starting to see the tip of the iceberg with that becoming more widely understood. At least in healthcare!!!! Let me make that clear. I’m also a mom to 2 kids and I definitely think people look at me weird when I’m in public with them so, that’s uncomfortable. As far as dating, I’m polyamorous and my partner loves and is attracted to my modifications, but my husband is not…they’re not his thing. I respect and appreciate both views. I do think my modifications make me more fetishized when I try to date, which is also really weird when I’m trying to build a relationship with someone.

I would think that someone denying you the ability to rent an apartment due to how you look and how they perceive you could have some anti-discriminatory repercussions on them, especially if you provide legitimate references!!! Just a note, your video quality is great but your sound needs definite improvement!!! I recommend getting an external microphone that you can attach to your camera and then lay the microphone on a mouse pad on a table in front of you. Sound is being picked up from too many hard surfaces (echo) and returned to the microphone. There is such a thing called a "boundary microphone" based on the "boundary effect" that eliminates the echo without you having to wear a lapel microphone.
@Lynn_Loheide
@Lynn_Loheide 10 ай бұрын
Oh yes improvement of sound quality is absolutely next up on my list! I currently have an external mic but this room just has a LOT of echo even with the mic. A lapel mic is my next investment for KZfaq but a good one is fairly expensive so. All in due time! Id love to eventually do some sound dampening in this room as well. I just upgraded my lighting, so sound will be next. :) thank you for the feedback!

I'd my cheeks pierced around 16 years ago and they was the piercings I got most positive comments on when I'd them for almost 2 years. They left permanent dimples witch I love. For some reason I got a lot more comments about my dimples/scar than any of my other facial piercings, including my septum that has been stretched on and off up to 5-6 mm the last 14 years. Sometimes I even got negative comments of my dimples as they're 'fake' lol. Some has tought they're natural to, it isn't obvious they're from my old piercings. It's something with cheek piercings that makes them "extreme" in people eyes, idk why because I loved mine when I'd them and also the dimples they left and yours is beautiful to!

With dating, I feel like the more modded I get, the more fetishized I get. Like, it hasn’t hindered dating for me but very often the first message I’ll get from someone is on my mods or trying to sexualize them in some fashion. If I get “you look like you like pain” or any variant of that again, I am going to scream.

I feel very lucky to mainly get positive feedback from my modifications than negative in my life. Sure I absolutely get the “god how are you going to look when you’re old? I bet you’ve not thought about that because you’re young and dumb” comments but mostly here in south England UK it’s pretty accepting! It definitely does get annoying when you’re slobbing around a supermarket and you know you’ll get at least one person comment on my cheek piercings or my blackout arms but I have a pretty good shrug it off mindset and I know it’s mostly from a place of curiosity. As you said I knew what I was getting into, and I’ve definitely had some prejudice but I didn’t struggle to find my own flat, I work as a piercer so it doesn’t affect career, and any relationships I would even consider to be in my life are those with kind souls. My partner has no tattoos or modifications and doesn’t want any either, my family disapprove but never comment. I’m very fortunate to have the experiences I do and for that I’m grateful 🥰

0:05 obvi in not past the intro but I know a lot of the… othering? Discrimination? Bad views? Of body mods is a mix of classism and racism. You have tattoos being associated with gang/criminal activity and tattoos and piercings being common as cultural practices in many indigenous cultures. I follow someone who’s… I think they’re Inuk? Who has face/hand tattoos who’s trying to work to make the tattoo industry more inclusion of indigenous practices cuz they were super hard pressed to find anyone who was willing to do their tattoos even though it’s for cultural reasons and they didn’t have any elders to do it due to genocide/colonialism

This is going to be heavily debated but I think you need to have extensive tattooing/piercings/heavy modifications. I think inherently being heavily modified includes having heavy mods, or /extensive/ tattooing and piercing. And enough of all of the above that it can not be hidden- you can not pass as just modified/non modified in long sleeves and pants.
