Video shows footage taken at 6am on Friday 8 November as the storm hit Hernani in Eastern Samar. Plan staff member Nickson Gensis took this while sheltering on the 2nd floor of a house less than a few hundred metres from the sea.
"Six of us took refuge on the top floor of a boarding house. Five were praying and I was filming. The others called me to pray with them but I said that I needed to document this."
"Three of our group were male and we all wore trunks so that we could swim if we needed to. We were so scared. But I thought, 'if I die, so be it'."
"It was like a huge tsunami but the water receded quickly afterwards. We ventured downstairs and outside around noon. I took shots of the boarding house we had been in because I was so thankful thank it protected me. At 2pm I started work, travelling to assess the damage to villages supported by Plan. I realised as I was taking notes while talking to people that I was shaking."

yea terrible thing that happened to those people but, there is a slight warning just like a tsunami, when the water gets sucked into the ocean it means theres a huge wave coming. not that it's enough time for them to do anything but a warning nonetheless. Thoughts and prayers with the survivors

@Rolando LOL! It's not a tsunami dude, it's a storm surge and they usually go up on land gradually not like this. This was very unprecedented because it acted like a tsunami when it was suppose to be just a storm surge. Experts said it was because of the change in the wind direction and the location of the city. It was a typhoon, tsunami's for earthquakes. lol

OK, now this is what the right front quadrant looks like when it finally comes onshore. it is a combination of 4 different components (such as the IBM (Inverted Barometric Mound/Wave), etc). But the full impact of the Storm Surge doesn't gradually build up (a portion of the Surge does gradually build up due to the Wind Set-up), but the major portion of the surge is moving along with the storm and if the storm is moving forward at 20 mph that is how fast the (IBM) Inverted Barometric Mound comes onshore. Awesome footage, and this is why people cannot out run the Storm Surge. Again, there are 4 different components of the Storm Surge, and most people can evade the 1st 3 components, but not the sudden IBM which travels at about the same speed as the storms forward motion (5-25mph). Many folks can be out in the calm of the eye and have the IBM suddenly hit them, and they cannot out run the 5-25 mph moving IBM. Great footage.

yea storm surge is deadly, A storm surge is an offshore rise of water associated with a low pressure weather system, typically tropical cyclones and strong extratropical cyclones. Storm surges are caused primarily by high winds pushing on the ocean's surface. The wind causes the water to pile up higher than the ordinary sea level. Storm surges claims many lives.

This town Hernani (shown in the video) had approximately 50 casualties. Most of the people in the town evacuated in the nearby school which is located a couple of kilometers inland. According to the residents the storm surge loose its power a couple of meters before hitting the school. Albeit the whole town is destroyed but a lot of people survive.

I saw the suffering and agony, of the people who struggled to stay alive, of the mothers who were holding tightly their crying babies from loud whistling of the angry wind and the scary sound of the thunders, the falling tears were shed for losing the beloved ones and mixed with the heavy bitter rain, the rage of wind with 250 MPH had no mercy.. had no exceptions! This was something the experts couldn't even predict. They were only able to figure why the storm surge acted like a tsunami after studying what happened. Unfortunately, the location, geographic condition, hot water temperature, and the change in wind direction permitted this to happen. There was nothing a human intervention could do as it was unforeseen.

It doesn't take this amount of storm surge to kill you. A fraction of this would be sufficient enough to wipe an area clean. This is the extreme and should be seen by everyone living in a hurricane prone area but also understand that even 1% of this, severity wise, could still easily kill you. The people filming this got extremely lucky! EXTREMELY! Like lottery winner lucky!

How can they be prepared for things the people of Tacloban don't know? This storm surge is the first time the Philippines experienced. A report from Pag-asa says it will be a very strong wind and rise of sea level but they did not release that to the public to avoid mass panic, and look what happen because of their decision, it's a mass grave. They should have force evacuate the people, some of these people who have died live too close to the sea. There's nobody to blame but the Government who should have acted more to save the lives of the people of Tacloban, the government knows, but lacks preparedness.

PAGASA did tell the LGUs and media about the high waves and storm surge. I even remember PAGASA showing a simulation of storm surge based on a Japan weather model in their press briefing and Kuya Kim Atienza reiterating the possible 7-8 meter storm surge in his weather report but the problem is, what does 7-8 meter storm surge looks like? And for most of the people in coastal communities without sufficient knowledge about weather stuff, the question that they were surely asking was "WTH is storm surge?" Sure, we can look at buildings with 7-8 meter height which I did to imagine the storm surge height. But no Filipinos, including me, know how catastrophic can storm surge be until Yolanda/Haiyan happened.

Hernani is plus or minus 33.3 km (20.69 miles) North-west of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. PAG-ASA stated that @ Guiuan, maximum sustaining winds is 235 kph and gustiness is 275 kph @ 5:00 am. So more or less this is what those wind speeds look like... I think the burst at the last part of the video is the 275 kph gust! They said that the wind was so strong that the structures were shaking they thought it was as earthquake thus mis-interpreting it as a tsunami.

Rodel Ferrer Obviously e you are also playing politics based on your comments, specially when you sided with the Mayor and LGU of Tacloban, Leyte, absolving them of any shortcomings, just because you say they were also hit. May kapabayaan yung Mayor nila sa Tacloban, kaya ganun kalaki ang casualty dun. You should go read the news article about the island of Tulang Diyot in Cebu, a small island where they recorded ZERO casualty. This is because the mayor in that place ordered a forced evacuation. Sineryoso nila yung warning. Yung mayor sa Tacloban e obviously didn't take the warnings seriously. Unlike the other towns.

Everyone knew already how strong the wind that typhoon has before it even landed... so I guess they thought it's just another strong typhoon they could handle in that area of tacloban... not knowing that the sudden violent upward and forward movement of the sea would be the REAL MAIN KILLER...it's a very phenomenal event... Government is the 2nd thing to blame... Weather News Anchors should be the 1st to know the exact idea, they should have atleast backup videos to flash on TVs and study how to put FEAR in detail when reporting something like this a lesson to learn of what really a Storm Surge is, it's now time to CHANGE the way how news weather is being reported.. thousands of people got instantly killed and suffered with just simple lack of knowledge...

I've been through Ivan and Katrina and more.. They're exciting! Stuff flying everywhere, the roof peeling off, trees ripping up and crashing next to the bedroom! Oh and no power for weeks! Party time!

this was terrible. i can't image the people in the streets or the people trapped in other houses or even evacuation centers... it's like tsunami, but more terrible that tsunami, with super intense wind and rain.

If this happened to my house in California it would get wiped out too... I just hope that house was evacuated long before the wave hit.

Nope, you're wrong. If this happened in california, it would have been known to the state of california to cause cancer. Everything is known to cause cancer in the state of california. Must be the reason why california is so fucked up.

@Anngil Loyola Exactly, which was something very unprecedented. Because storm surges usually increase by hours but this one came in like a tsunami

Majority would say the buck stops at the Philippine president..nonetheless, if there should be buck passing, the local leadership of Tacloban city (mayor) should also catch that as well.
