I have an Orca torch, and it's my go-to torch - I use it with MAPP gas for a little more heat. I have a Smith little torch, a Prestolite acetylene-air type, and a larger oxy-acetylene setup, but for most jewelry, the Orca is the best. You don't need the heat of oxy-acetylene to solder a bezel or a ring shank. I much prefer it to the overpriced Little torch by Smith. The beauty of it over most propane torches is that the air supply is adjustable, giving you anything from a soft reducing flame to hotter but oxidizing one. I've been doing jewelry since the 1960s, and it's the best torch I've ever owned. I might sell my Smith torch, because I never use it anymore.

@@alexkofod2314 No, I use the oxy-acetylene for that. You could melt small amounts with it, though.

i bought one of these just to play with, not horrible, but not great either. I prefer my little torch to solder with. the orca's smallest tip isn't good for precision joints. and the rosebud tip on the little torch melts metal faster and gets it hotter for an even pour.

I have one and find it to be a good safe option. However, for a couple years now the torch will not maintain an even flame. The flame gets larger as more and more gas comes out the nozzle. This of course also makes it a cooler flame as it becomes less and less oxygenated. This is incredibly frustrating. No one at Otto Frei could trouble shoot this problem and I could not find any helpful information elsewhere.

can you talk about cleaning the torch heads - used MAPP gas and propane and a lot of carbon build up as we used it in a class setting. so needless to say problems with carbon/dirt build making it hard to start up. saw a compressed air injection to blow out for and aft the torch head, can we use solvents as well ?? thanks

MAP-Pro is pretty dirty (I don't think you can get real MAPP anymore). I only use it when I need a little extra heat, and then I use the Bernzomatic BZ8250HTKC MAP-Pro Hose Torch Kit. With this torch, I would stick with propane.

Great. but a lot of information is missing...such as, what's the length of the hose? Are hose extensions available, how long can one use a disposable tank for soldering, etc?
@Ottofrei
@Ottofrei Жыл бұрын
Hey there! This torch kit includes a 50" hose, extras are available but we don't typically recommend extensions, I would say the tank itself would last several hours and depending on what tip is being used that could vary from 10 -15 hours
@Flametamer9
@Flametamer9 Жыл бұрын
@@Ottofrei well the problem with that is I'm in japan, and although we have the usual barbecue size propane tank available, I don't want to keep it in my studio for obvious reasons and so they sell the Disposable Coleman tanks I don't want to have to keep throwing them away and buying a new one, I would like to be able to either keep the 5 gallon size tank outside on the veranda and run the hose into my studio, or be able to refill the smaller 1 lb tanks but the fillable 1 lb tanks are not available in this country

@@Ottofrei do you have extra hoses available in stock at Otto Frei and can two of them be easily connected together? I'm going to be coming to the Bay Area on the 23rd of December and I wonder if you're going to be open between December 26th and January 3rd?

I’m using an Orca torch (M75) and a small crucible and up until now I always managed to melt 20 grams of sterling silver scraps easily. Last week I changed my workshop to another spot in my house and suddenly I’m having trouble melting silver, even much smaller quantities, silver starts to melt, turns orange but nothing else, I can try for a lot of time and nothing happens, it’s pretty frustrating. I tried with 3 different crucibles and nothing, any ideas what may cause this? I know that my torch is better for soldering but why this sudden change?

My usual torch is a Smith Little Torch, but I bought this torch to melt small amounts of scrap silver as the Smith just eats up the bottled oxygen when melting silver. I am using MAPP gas for the EZ torch. However, I seem to be getting a large amount of carbon building up on my scrap. I have also had this problem when I used the torch to anneal some metal - -carbon build up on my fire bricks. Any idea why this is happening?

You're probably using a reducing flame - turn up the air control ring for more air.

I purchased the EZ torch from Otto Frei and have had trouble with it from the beginning. It does not always want to light and the flame spits/cuts out when I'm trying to solder....any advice as to what I am doing wrong?? The instructions that came with the torch are very basic - no cleaning instructions or good tips really.

Me too! I’ve tried a few different propane tanks, thinking maybe I had a “dirty” tank clogging up the tip. I have never had a clean flame and always just sputters out before I even get going.

I've had an EZ for about three years now. Initially I got spluttering and blocking as people have described but worked out two things: Don't leave the tank valve open for an extended period, thinking maybe one hour max. I just turn the tank completely off after my solderings done for a while. Also, only open the tank enough to maintain the flame with the size of the nozzle you are using. You can use a regulator to help you or make a mark on your tank. I have marks for small, medium and large nozzles and open my tank up just enough for each nozzle. There are other ways you can clean your nozzles when they block too. After I sorted these two things out I never get spluttering or blocking and they don't need cleaning. My only persistant trouble I have with it is that the valve for letting in more external air doesn't stay in the exact position I would like all the time. Depends how I am holding it. I often have to keep one finger on it. I am pretty flame fussy though.
