Dan Hampton flew F-16 fighter jets in combat over 151 missions in both Iraq Wars before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. In this episode we discuss his journey into the Air Force, the incredibly demanding weapons school for fighter pilots, combat operations he flew over Iraq, and some incredible stories about aerial dog fights during training. We also discuss Dan's new book Operation Vengeance about the American World War II fighter pilots who were sent on a secret mission to kill Admiral Yamamoto.

Viper Pilot was amazing, my first book about fighter pilots that I have read, its a whole different world up there, all the lingo and what not. Many many thanks to Mr Hampyon flying those AA and SAM hunting missions, can't imagine how the first few days of the war could have gone if not for the Vipers. Great historical book!

What was his callsign ? I didn't hear it mentioned in the video and it's not in the title or show notes , always interesting to know their callsign! Some of the origin stories are hilarious. e.g. if your surname is Campbell, you are automatically "Soup", F-14 RIO Ward Carroll got "Mooch" because he asked someone for a lend of 20 bucks, lol

Great show guys, an interesting change of pace guest. I haven't heard anyone with a significant knowledge of Japanese history since the Meji Restoration combine that with WW II history in the Pacific. Guess I'll have to read "Operation Vengnce" . Looking forward to your next show.

Jack should have challenged him on the F/18A and F being better looking than the Viper; and both are equally as good. Just my opinion.

Ones the Super-Tucano, forgot the other. Burt Rutan made the best yet seen replacement for the A-10 but hasn't gained any traction.

There were 11 students in TwoDogs' Weapons School class, 94A, not eight [Steve Clapp, Mark Cline, Merrill Fink, TwoDogs, Steven Kempf, Keith Miller, Kenneth Milspaugh, Gerald Paulus, Christopher Quinn, Greg Semmel and Dan Swayne (nickel)]. The last Fighter Weapons School class was 92A, my class. Class 92B included B-1 and B-52 students and the name of the school was changed from USAF Fighter Weapons School to USAF Weapons School. Certainly, in 1994 the USAF Weapons School was much closer to its roots than it is now. I spent 15 1/2 years as an academics instructor at the Weapons School after I retired from the USAF in 2004. I retired from that job a week ago. The school bares little resemblance to the school I grew up with. Ever try to teach radar theory, the fundamentals of low-observable technology and other things to ICBM, space and cyber warfare officers?

Wow that is strange!! I was in class 89B with Vladimir Puttin, Donald Trump, Denzel Washington, Eddie Vedder, John Boyd, Eddie Murphy, Idi Amin, Moshe Dayan and Marilyn Manson. Never saw you dough..

Great American, he's been advocating for us to get F-16's in Ukraine for a long time, unfortunately we are still waiting. KZfaqrs Ward "Mooch" Carroll (F-14 RIO) & Mike "Pako" Benitez (F-15E WSO) might beg to differ on the "back-seater" thing! haha😉 One question what was Dan's callsign ?

It is a shame Dan is talking this way about John Boyd. I don't think it is fair to judge all the good work John did by saying "look how he ended in life, because of the way he comfronted people". Due to very dedicated people like John, airplanes like the f15, f16 and f18 were born and pressed trough the pentagon. Without the fighter mafia there would have never been a F16... So Dan, please be more respectfull to the guys that came before you. This is like Lewis Hamilton saying: Ayrton Senna was not a great driver, look how he ended....
