F.P. Journe, Philippe Dufour, and More Independents with Mike Shani | Collector Conversation

And while many experienced collectors are just now turning their attention to the category, Mike Shani has been drawn to these masters of modern watchmaking for over two decades. His collection reflects some of the most technically and aesthetically exquisite watches out there, and we were thrilled to welcome him to WatchBox’s global headquarters for this special Collector’s Conversation with George Mayer.
If you already follow Mike on Instagram - @shani.watch - you may recognize some of the highlights explored today. Among them are the F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Coeur de Rubis with its spectacular ruby dial, a very early edition of Journe’s Tourbillon Souverain with a big dial screw, a uniquely customized Chronomètre Optimum, and the Roger Smith Series 2. The guys also discuss watches that didn’t make the trip to Philly with Mike, including his Philippe Dufour Simplicity and the first Journe, a Chronomètre à Résonance.

This is next, next level stuff here. When the collector says “I like to keep it simple” and he is referring to tourbillons and constant force escapements in Journe and Roger Smith it is dreamland for the us “normal” collectors. Great vid and amazing pieces, thanks for sharing Mr. Shani.

Enjoyed Mr. Shanlikian's interview. He's genuinely passionate. Also, George has a lot of hip external rotation range of motion...wonder if he does yoga, BJJ, or something else?

Right ,straight off the bat ,Tim Mosso expounds and gets real good close-ups for the viewer. It will be really good if you don a pair of white soft cotton gloves and gave it some closer inspection/appraisal for our delectation and appreciation.Although out of my budget for the foreseeable future like many I’m a massive fan of FPJ. He’s up there with the likes of Kari Voutilainen et al, The best of breed. Otherwise great format. PS also the customary wristwatch check is becoming more and more universal across many channels. Would like to have known what you had on in this shoot.

Apart from the ruby dial FPJ, not a single straight close up shot of a watch. I understand minimalism is an in-thing right now, but this is kinda ridiculous... anyway fascinating to hear his philosophy.

Great video. I urge all collectors to check out JN Shapiro. His dials are absolutely gorgeous and he is destined to be the finest watchmaker in the US.

Luv to see collection that is not hyped but more on being enthusiast and a true watch collector/ lover rather than look at my rowlex its hard to get and the value is going up oh shyt Im broke let me flip my rowlex 🤦🏻♂️. Luv the conversation and story.

It helps when govberg (you) hoard a ton of the market to increase demand. I was never a big fan of most of Journe's stuff and maintain that it is extremely overrated. It's funny that Laurent Ferrier is never mentioned, a man (and brand) I find much more compelling, especially at today's secondary prices.

this is why i dont try to collect watches...all these amazing pieces its impossible to get them all. his collection is insane. i was happy to have a gold balance in a platinum watch, this is a different level. I never even heard of roger smith.
